Hi
I decided to go ahead with valve clearances today but have now come to an abrupt halt. Having removed the cover I noticed that 2 of the 4 rubber caps beneath the cover were missing.I found 1 of them resting by a valve however I think that the other one may have entered the engine down the middle by the chain. Realistically what does this mean for me and the bike. I am sure I have heard of people stripping down engines for this very problem.

it sounds as if they fell off of the cover when you lifted it? Get a very strong flashlight to see if it in fact is down there and can be fished out. Obviously you looked around your work space and didnt drop it on the floor. If you suspect that it is in your engine, you should do all in your power to remove it. It could stay down there for a while with no problem, but if it eventually gets beat up and fragments, you might just get a oil passage blocked resulting in oil starvation to something important that goes round and round. That could possibly cause a seized engine at a time that you really wouldnt want it to happen (like extreme double or triple digits)....

Make a very good friend with a boroscope and DO NOT TURN OVER THE MOTOR in case it decides to move around. Also can look it the drain plug after the oil is out with the boroscope....might be time to buy one a cheapie might be 100.00 maybe?
