I went through this before, but need a real correct answer. I just removed what could be the only filoter that has been on my zl100o engine and it had a seperate bottom and top cap. The replacement filter is exactly the same height of the old "open" filter with both the bottom and top caps installed. I didnt want to put a cap on the replacement filter (which has the caps and grommets built in), because it would lower the filter and decrease the bypass space between the bottom of the oil pan and filter. What is the purpose of the top cap that comes halfway down the filter? My other zl1000 engine didnt have it as i recall. Is it some sort of baffle and what could be the harm in leaving it out? Is it meant to direct flow of oil from the bottom of the oil pan?

The shroud on the filter(the cap that comes halfway down) is designed to protect the paper element of the filter from the high velocity oil impact that can happen when running around 10,000 rpm and can be found on all kawasaki's that use that filter.
