Just a quick question if anyone has a set of stock coils for a ZL9 sitting...I bought a set of Dyna coils and I am just wondering what the mounting stud spacing is on the stock ones...My bike is not apart yet and I was just curious..

Willy....what Model# are those Dyna Coils with the 4" center to center mounting spacing?

Here is the ebay thing that I got them thru...they are 2.2 ohm....

But this picture is what the coil truly looks like and you can see that you can run long 1/4" bolts up and should be able to go right in the stock brackets..Might have to open the slots up a touch to get the 1/4" bolts to fit thru...I have to see about the coil side ends. I went to the local auto store and they have nothing that will work in the coil tower...i tried calling dyna a bit ago, but they were all busy

Willy - they MIGHT work that way, not sure - there may not be enough room to have the coil outputs pointing down like you have pictured.

Mine are turned to the side, mounted with angle brackets.

Yeah, I am not sure...I don't have mine apart and they may very well be too close the the valve cover...I saw on Dyna's website some brackets they sell, so I have an idea of how you did yours...Since the spacing is 4" you could get some small "L" brackets and allow them to mount sideways...

It always seems like you will have more room than you actually do when you start sliding them in...when all you need is another 1/4" and it just aint gonna happen...

I got my work cut out for me...

1K...Putting a Pingel fuel tap on it (factory one is screwed up) and I also have a coolant leak (thermostat housing O ring)...I also had a cold leak at the coolant manifold O rings on the carb side..I bought enough to do the 2 rear and the 4 front and hopefully be done with that...Got a new used shifter from Markus that I gotta switch out too...and I am having custom handlebars made for the 1k (black powder coated) and I am gonna switch out the mirrors to black, put on the new black levers.

The 9....Coils, paint valve cover, touch up frame, bodywork repaint to basic black and new decals...While the cover is off I gotta take a close look at cam chain and guides...I need to pull the cover off and check for a timing advancer too....

I got all the parts coming...just gotta get them and find the time

OK...If you call dyna after getting the coils, they will send you a kit for the terminals for free...If you call them direct to get the coils, I believe they will include with the coils...I got mine through that ebay deal...Not sure if there is a price difference or not, but I think they are a good deal..

I was on hold for a while, but I got thru..

What type of end do they take?If they are automotive type, they should be easy to get.I'm thinking they are like older points type plug wires(not sure though).

Jmac....they may be what you are describing....On the coil towers instead of it being a male end sticking out so that you can put a sleeve type end on the wire, it is a female tower...it looks like the only point of contact is the flat surface down at the very bottom inside. It almost seems as if it would need to be almost kinda spring loaded so that vibration and movement of the wire would not cause the contact to be broken like a loose connection...When I called dynatek the guy told me that it is based on a very old (and very reliable) automotive design from back in the 50's...Since they are gonna mail them to me for free and I am not in a super hurry, I said "sure, send em my way"

hi guys, havent been around much lately, work and home have me busy. i also have used the dyna coils. i mounted them with some small L-shaped brackets. i believe dale w. used to have a diagram for them on his site. i just used some small brackets from lowes and had no problems.

they look like this. The end on the right crimps onto the wire. Just strip a little of the wire, fold the bare wire back over the insulation, and crimp the terminal onto the insulation. The bare wire would on the bottom of the terminal shown.

Interesting....I must not be seeing something inside of the tower of the coil...From what it looks like, the contact down inside of there is at the very bottom and it is flat across...At my local parts store yesterday, he had terminals just like that I could have bought....but the way I see it is that the ONLY contact inside of the coil tower is the flat piece at the very bottom. So the contact surface of the terminal would be that thin semi ring on the terminal laying flat on the end. It seems like there is hardly any surface contact area and if through vibration the wire moved and the connector got cocked even 1/32" of an inch, it would come away and break contact...

Is there surface area inside the coil tower other than the flat piece at the very bottom or is there some surface on the sides of the inside?

Yes, it's like a cup, the sides and bottom are brass - at least mine is.

WillyD

Ok....Then that explains it...I guess I couldn't see it...It almost looks like it is just a flat piece at the very bottom with the sides being insulated...

So I imagined it like this....Take a glass drinking glass and turn it upside down on a flat piece of glass and where the glass pieces meet is where surface area is...**** the glass even just a couple degrees and you lose most of the contact..Lift it straight up 1/32" and now it has no contact...

But being the contact is cup like that would explain it....I need to get a light and shine down in there...I am sure it is there, I just didn't see it

Thats is what I thought. If you buy a set of accel plug wires they come with a set of those ends, and a set for a HEI type.(looks like the end of a spark plug)
That is the same type of plug wire end that was used for 1974 and older cars and trucks(or any thing with a points type distributor)Any auto parts store should have them.If you can get them for free even better.I have a bunch of these(new) if any body has trouble finding them.
