View Full Version : Do you wear a helmet or not?
We had not had any polls for a while. So here goes.
I ask cause I just got a new helmet.I got a HJC CL-15.I know not a high dollar unit like some have, but it fits me well and fells pretty comfy. In the past I have not wore a helmet, and not sure how much I will wear this one.I'm a volunteer fireman, and first responder.I have seen the results(up close)of bike crashs with and with out helmets.I will say at highway speeds, and contact with a vehicle,I don't think it matters.but it might give a slight chance.
I have put about a 100 miles on wearing the new hat.On the highway I kinda like it,and think any trips I will have it on.Plus I stole the wifes I-pod,and like riding with tunes.Riding in town and riding with groups I don't know how much I will wear it.
I just wondered what you guys thought, and did.I'm not for or aginst helmets.I belive it is a personal choice.

Down here you HAVE to wear a helmet.
Besides that, it gives me a more safer feeling.
I always ride with a Evil Knievel replica helmet and never use earplugs or i-POD's when I drive.
Once you've driven in my area you know why I don't want anything to disturb my hearing.

Just an observation........
We all know what an independent and cantankerous bunch that bike riders can "sometimes" be; that's a given that's understood by all. Therefore, it was astonshing to see thus far in the polling, the high percentage of "voluntary" helmet wearers, as well as the high count of full face fans as well. I make that comment from the position of presuming that many folks do not reside in a "must wear a helmet" state.
Hoping the trend is consistant, as I'd like to see all you guys be around safe and sound for a long...long time...I'm enjoying the camaraderie....great bunch of folks. You guys are growing on me....Ha ha ha.
this is my crashhat,
just like Fonz said, you have to put on a helmet here.
i think its safer, and good to keep warm too,
been trying an ipod, and like it, but if traffic gets busy i turn it off.
can't put volume up or down with gloves on. :angry7:

In Sweden it's a law issue. You must a wear helmet.
I would wear it (Fullface, Nolan) anyway. I even wear a helmet when i pedal to work on my cycle (Bicyclehelmet) and when i take a trip on inlines.
(About 5% of all which are involved in a bicycle accident get injuries which give disability in a bigger or lesser degree.)
The main reason for that is my work; I work with rehab for persons which are in for rehabilitaton from head injuries and stroke. I don't want to learn to walk, speak or in worse case learn everything from the beginning again.
It has taken me a little more than 40 years to learn this much and there are still so much i wanna know...
Ride safe!

We have to wear helmets by law.
I wear a full face flip up helmet but I went through a phase of wearing a half shell DOT approved helmet.

Good poll, I wear a full face modular style or a half shell. Lately I wear them most of the time, I like the feeling of security. Always gotta fight with the GF to wear them, she doesn't like em. Tried the ipod and didn't like the distraction.

No offense to those of you who choose not to wear helmets. I have taught my children from a young age that not wearing a helmet is good. There are a lot of people out there that need organ transplants. Those organs have to come from somewhere! Please if you don't wear your helmet make sure to check the box where it says _ Organ Donor. Personally I have checked the box, but I always wear my full face!
I like the following website: http://jeff.dean.home.att.net/swisher.htm
Our state has given people the choice of whether they wear helmets or not. But when I drive my car, I must wear a seatbelt! :no-no-no: What's with that?
BE SAFE!!!

I wear a Fulmer flip up style. I wear glasses and the modular style is much more friendly suiting up. For a sunday ride I may leave it on the bench but more often than not it is on my head! I also wear my jacket, boots and gloves most of the time!

I checked "Sometimes", but it's actually about 95% of the time. I will occasionally take off without it - if I'm working on the bike and want to be able to hear anything irregular, or sometimes just for a cruise in the 'hood. I don't go very far without it, but that's really a poor excuse because you never know when some idiot's gonna get you.

+1 kawboy........but then there's another big factor for me........Critters!!!! We have lots of bumble bees, june bugs, ect. around here and from the sounds of them hitting my full face viser, I sure don't want 'em hitting my bare face!! If you're around the century mark and you catch a bumble bee in the face, you'll probably be off the roadway by the time you'll recover and normally, that's not going to turn out well at all!!! I had a sparrow hit me at highway speed before as well. That would've been real ugly without my helmet on!!

I live in a no helmet law state. I wear a HJC C-12 full face, but mostly because I wear contacts, and to keep the wind off my eyes. If I did not need the wind protection I would be inclined to not wear a helmet. If I am on the Shadow with the big fairing, and just bopping around town, I don't wear one. We used to have a 550 LTD with a Quick Silver Vetter that blocked a lot of wind, and I could get away without one. I am sort of the opinion that a helmet just allows an open casket funeral, but I realize that is an extreme viewpoint. Also, riding around town is probably more dangerous than on the highway, but maybe not in my town. I might hit a horse and buggy! I wear a helmet about 99 percent of the time, I don't ride the Shadow much.

The helmet just fell off my head, it looked like it had been run over by a truck. My eyelid was hanging straight down-just barely connected at the corner of my eye along with alot of other small cuts around it and I could stick my tongue through my cheeck in one spot. The surgeon that I had did spectacular work on me-it took him 6 1/2 hours and 300+ stitches but you can't really see any scars on my face now. I probably wouldn't be here right now if didn't wear a helmet. I never leave home without it.

It is the Law in SA to wear a helmet, but I have ridden without out it in some small towns, where there are no traffic police and we were traveling at low speed 35kph max. But I wear a flip face, just make thing easier, with the sun glasses and filling up the bike at the pumps, we have a language barrier issue here with the attendants so making sure they can hear you clearly is mandatory, or you may get diesel in the bike :P

Kansas doesn't require you to wear a helmet, and many of my rider friends & I have had this conversation recently. The majority of the riders wear a hat of some type, even if it's just a skullcap. Strictly in the FWIW column, most of these are Harley drivers. There are 3 exceptions who ride something other than HD's: a Honda VTX, a Yamaha Dirt/Street, & me with my ZL. All of the Harley drivers wear hats, whether in town or out. A few commute a fairly long distance on the Interstates, so I can see that need. The Honda guy carries a skullcap but is bare-headed most of the time, but the dirt rider always wears a full-face.
Personally, I go back and forth - but not because I'm immortal. Far from it. As a former Paramedic, I've seen the results of confrontations between cars and bikes all too often. I've also seen it from a personal view - way back in the '70's, I had just purchased a brand new HD. Picked it up on a Tuesday after work, totalled it on the following Saturday, courtesy of a drunk cage driver who didn't understand red meant stop. At that time Kansas required helmets and it was a good thing - my head hit the curb after flying over her car, and destroyed my helmet. Had a huge headache along with the broken bones, but I'm still here. . . :laughing7:
In cooler weather, I'll wear my open-face with shield, and on a highway ride, I probably would wear it then as well. Since the weather's been getting a little nicer here lately, I've been wearing my half-hat more, though yesterday, I didn't wear one in the afternoon. As was mentioned, wearing one is a personal choice, and I appreciate having the choice be mine. I guess I wear one more than I had realized, though, and would advocate wearing a hat most times.
And as Beav said - if you don't wear one, make sure your Donor box is checked!!

Thanksgiving 1979 I hit a dog on my KZ-750. Front wheel locked up and I thought that I had learned to fly. My flight time from the saddle to a 3-point landing (face and both wrist) on the asphalt was very short.
Like Justin implied... Kissing the ground is not recommended!!! Many stitches and face scars, arm scars, and missing teeth later … I never leave home without a full face.

Interesting....
When it is cold I wear one...When I am gonna be a good distance from home and rain is possible I wear one....Every other time I ride, I go without...
I know it is probably better to wear one...I have been wearing a seatbelt religiously for years....The wind in my eyes (with no helmet) is ferocious and I have a hard time sealing it out...
I guess if I was gonna come off the bike at ANY speed and someone asked if I would rather have a helmet on or off, I would opt for one 100% of the time...I really wish I could get in the habit of jeans, boots, jacket, gloves and helmet all the time.....but I usually wear boots and jeans and not the other probably 90% of the time...
I have an HJC full face and if I was not wearing full face it would be none..I think if you are gonna wear one, get full face..

If its below 40 degrees I will wear my helmet. Above those temps almost never. It's my choice I know. I've been down 2 times and had a helmet on both times so guess luck was with me.
Very cool results, and interesting comments.I was surprised that this poll had not come up before.
Luckily where I live there is no helmet law.I like choices.Like I said before I got a new helmet a few weeks ago.It took a while to find one that fit me good.I figured if it fit good,I would were it more.I was amazed at the choices when it comes to helmets. It is weird that there is no standard sizes though.I have a big head so I tried on quite a few.I wanted a full face.I found several that fit,but I felt like the shield was smashing my nose.I found out that HJC is one of a few that actually has 3 different shell sizes. It makes a big difference(for me any way).So far I do like it on the highway, not so much in town.I like listening to the radio on the way to and from work,(10 miles one way)and the helmet makes that possible.kinda relaxing after work.I live in a rural area,on the edge of a small town.So not a lot of traffic and such.Any way I hope none of you guys ever have to test your helmet, and for the ones of us that don't always wear one,I hope we don't ever have the need for one.

JUST MY OPINION, BUT YOU KNOW, THE MAJORITY OF LAWS ARE CREATED TO "PROTECT" THE PUBLIC FROM THEMSELVES. WITHOUT DEBATING THE VALIDITY, I DO THINK THAT THE HELMET SHOULD BE A PIECE OF LAWFUL REQUIRED EQUIPMENT. IF SOMEONE CHOOSES TO EXERCISE THIER FREEDOM BY NOT WEARING A HELMET AND THEY SUBSEQUENTLY GET A PIECE OF GRAVEL OR A LARGE INSECT IN THE FACE/EYE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, I GUESS THATS THE PRICE TO PAY FOR FREEDOM, RIGHT? ALTHOUGH YOU COULD LOSE CONTROL AND HAVE A ACCIDENT THAT DOES NOT KILL YOU FROM SAID GRAVEL OR INSECT, A BRAIN-DAMAGING ACCIDENT IS STILL WORTH THE "FREEDOM" RIGHT? I WOULD HATE TO HAVE TO RESORT TO GOING TO THE CLUBHOUSE LOOKING LIKE THE ELEPHANT MAN BECAUSE I CANT RIDE ANYMORE SIMPLY BECAUSE I WAS "MAN" ENOUGH TO EXERCISE MY FREEDOM. LETS KEEP IT REAL HERE, BUT YOU CAN GET KILLED BY EVEN DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT AND BEING SAFE BECAUSE OF THE UNKNOWNS ON THE ROAD. WHY CREATE A OPENING FOR ANOTHER POTENTIAL FATAL CONCERN? I WOULD RATHER BE A "SISSY" THAT SURVIVED TO RIDE AGAIN THAN A DEAD OR PERMANANTLY DISABLED "TOUGH GUY". I ALWAYS WEAR A FULL HELMET WITH A FACE SHIELD. STAY AWAY FROM BEANIE HELMETS. THEY OFFER NO PROTECTION FROM ANYTHING MORE THAN BIRD DROPPINGS...:pistols:

JUST MY OPINION, ... A LARGE INSECT IN THE FACE/EYE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS
WALTSTAR,
I totally agree with everything you said. I hope to lighten up the thread after your all caps, get your attention posting. I almost snorted my morning coffee when I read your “A LARGE INSECT IN THE FACE/EYE” statement.
Last week I am flying home on the ZL in the HOV lane, wearing my full face Shoe, when a June Bug flew up under my chin strap and tried to crawl up my nose. I did not have a clue what it was, but its little spinney legs were tugging at my nose hairs.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>

I am blowing snot, trying to get my gloved hand inside the face shield to get whatever it was out. All I could imagine was a wasp or hornet, or something bad!! About the time I got the bugger out, I looked up and there was a slow moving ‘turtle’ in the HOV lane. Aggggghhhhh!!!! I lock up before my front wheel contacts their rear bumper.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Went home, changed my underwear, got me a beer, and never said anything about the incident to anyone. Soooo. What does this highjack mean? NOTHING…. All have a nice day and a great week-end. I will be in Austin on 6th street…

SORRY ABOUT THE ALL CAPS. TWO REASONS FOR IT; FIRST, IN THE SCHOOLS OF ARCHITECTURE YOU ARE TAUGHT TO WRITE IN ALL CAPS AND SECOND, I AM GETTING OLD AND THE EYES SEE THE CAPS BETTER WHEN TYPING. NO OFFENSE TO YOU GUYS AND GALS OUT THERE. IT TAKES A WHOLE LOT TO GET ME RILED UP, SO YOU WILL NEVER SEE CAPS AS A OFFENSIVE. WHEN I GET RILED, THOUGH, YOU WILL SEE ME WRITE LIKE THIS!:pistols:

I wear a full face no matter how far I go. Most of the time if you go over the bars, the first thing to hit the ground is your chin so it just makes sense to have that first line of defence. out here though, it is illegal to ride with headphones in so its just the sound of the road and the engine that I get to hear.

Used to wear an open face when I was in my teens but while doing so I got hit by a june bug at 70mph, a bee went up under my helmet at 35mph, and then some a$$hat threw his lit cigerette out of his car while driving down the road and went between my helmet and left ear and burnt me at 65mph. *dayum near wrecked from that one!* So yes I wear full face or nothing at all but 99% of the time I wear it even if I lived in a no helmet law state.

Been there. Sitting at a red light, no one in front of or behind me (I checked my mirrors). All of a sudden I'm flying up over the car (seemed like slow motion or a dream). Landed flat on my back, head slammed to the pavement. I was dazed for a second, looked up and my bike (a really cool little DR350 dual-sport) was 40 yards down the road. My first thought was to go pick my bike up. Tried to stand up and fell back down - broken hip. Luckily that was my ONLY injury - not another scratch - but if not for the helmet would have been a lot worse.

State law up here for the last 15 years or so.
I am kind of torn on this issue. I love the feel of zipping around town with just a pair of shades on but I did total out a bike, the helmet took a beating and I walked off only a little sore. I have more to live for now and would wear it even if I didn't have to. Even a 10 MPH mishap is enough to give serious head trauma.

Used to wear an open face most of the time but sometimes if I was just going on a short leisurely ride I wouldn't wear it. All that changed about 20 years ago when this state passed a mandatory helmet law. I was so PO'ed that I sold my bike and didn't ride for a few years. But, I missed it, so I adapted to it. Now I ride with a full face but no iPod, the motor and the ride is sweet music to me.

Hey Valvegod,
Where you from in Iowa?? I took an early retirement from Burlington PD to go backon active duty with the Navy then after 13 years got tired of it and went over to the Army. Went to Iraq and got blown up, now waiting a medical retirement from the Army.. I am part time in a wheel chair and crutches and have no feeling or movement in my right leg. But that doesn't stop me from riding though at all...

You wouldn't know the town but west of Osceola, north of hwy 34. To Burlington, it's a good 3hr trip west on 34. I'm in the army res. but young enough to have no experience with deployments. Hopefully you can recover but it's good to hear it doesn't stop you from riding. I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't.
I always wear a full face, even if I ride in a t-shirt (love that). I'm too good looking to risk messing up my face! :rotf: No really, I have 3 young sons and a wife that I would rather not die on, or leave to take care of a veggie. I figure road rash/broken bones will heal, but the brain doesn't come back so easy.
I haven't had any crashes (fingers X'ed) but we all know it's way too easy and you rarely see it coming.

I always wear a full-face helmet. I'm a new rider (I got my bike last July) and my wife insisted I get a full-face. At the time I was a bit bummed but now I don't regret it at all. There's a lot of traffic here and sitting in traffic with a full-face sucks, but it's made up for it a few times. Just this past weekend a car ahead of me kicked up a rock that hit me in the face. Except for the loud "thwack" sound it was just like hitting a big bug. I also like the thought of having something between my face and the road if it ever comes down to it.
I don't listen to music or wear any ear plugs. There's enough bad/crazy drivers here that I don't want to risk the distraction, and I'm easily distracted. Also, I really like the soothing sound of a revving engine and the wind.

I've always worn a helmet ever since I started riding dirt bikes as a youngster, and I always ride with long sleeves, gloves, long pants and over the ankle boots. I have too much going for me to risk serious injury if I can prevent it. As for a helmet, I got a screaming deal on an Icon Airframe that I couldn't pass up. $150 brand new for a distributor demo that had never been worn.

I missed the full face thing. I haven't felt protected (not safe, but protected) without a full face on a bike since 1975 after having my first Bell Star. It was a legal requirement back then here in Ohio, but I had flat tracked and harescrambled in the past and knew the benefits. I'd also trials ridden without, but now I'd at least use a bicycle helmet if not some sort of shortie. It's now legal to go without here, but not something for me to do without some emergency situation.
I also have a CL15. It fits my head shape like a glove. It felt tight, but even after over two hours, no hot spots. I did want to get it off at that point, but that's kind of true regardless. Two hours without taking a helmet off is a bit fatiguing. Of course it's far better than two hours of wind blast in my face.
I got a chin curtain - good buy. It takes out some of the chill from the wind under my chin. The flange that slides into the joint between paddint and helmet shell needs trimmed about 1/3 shorter and is still a bit of a chore to fit, but it's well worth it.
I picked up a breath deflector too, but it is a mediocre fit in the S size helmet, scrunching up a bit. It's fine for no glasses, but I'm not so sure about with them, seems to be sure interference. Some modifications may be in order - I've read a lot of plus comments when it comes to fogging. It's a shame they don't have some possible modifications that could be done to tailor the fit to one's proboscis. Keep the forming tab off so the part around the nose could be fitted a bit then the tab riveted back on with some sort of plastic snap rivet. I'm gonna play with the thing a bit.
Regardless, for this rider I want to protect what has the worst capability for healing if banged or scuffed - my cranium!
PS.
Let me give a shout out to the thought of wearing a full face off road helmet on the street. I've done it a lot on both the dual sport and the KLX. Two good reasons - air flow on a hot day and a real visor for low setting or early rising sun. I wish full face street helmets had similar capabilities. I eventually plan to go to a specific dual sport type helmet sometime due to having both visor and face shield at the same time. Some friends have them and they love them.
A solid color MX or dual sport helmet can look okay on street use if image is part of the equation. Even shortening the visor a bit is also possible.
As for the visor catching wind, unless you ride with your head tilted back or blasting about well over 60 mph it's not much of an issue. It becomes second nature to have a slight downward tip of the head, even with regular road helmets when riding on bright days.
Here's my MX helmet:
http://p1.bikepics.com/pics/2009/05/31/bikepics-1684344-800.jpg
Even visor's not too long. It's an old HJC. A pair of wrap around glasses that fit in the openning, or goggles which I do, takes care of the eyes. But those sneaky bugs sting when they get through to your cheeks!

75% of the time I have my Scorpion EXO700 on, other times, like when it's 95 degrees and 95% humidity, I don't wear it.
I ride with a guy who took a hornet to the forehead at 70mph this summer. NOT PRETTY. A week later he got one in the neck. Swelled up like a softball!!
Another week went by, and he rides up with a Scorpion EXO1000 helmet.
Yah Buddy!

I have wore a helmet since day one of my riding. I have a problem with my eyes watering and unless I wear flight goggles or ski goggles I cannot see a **** thing. I feel comfortable in it. It has always been full face and have tried small shell style and large shied but full face works best for me.

100% of the time, only because the law in Michigan makes me. When I lived in Illinois, it was more like 25%.
