My neighbor just got a Honda cb750f that his grandfather bought new in1976. I have already stripped the tank to bare metal and plan on putting DP and mud on it this weekend. He wants the header and exhaust pipe flat black. Has anyone used a GOOD product for high heat areas? I know ceramic is the way to go but he is on the "budget" plan.....Any thoughts?

Not sure I have ever used anythin g I would trust to hold on the header. Black chrome is a good choice but not on a budget. My experience will dictate that I find Krylon aerosol is the best of the best. They do make a "ceramic" aerosol that is supposedly good to 1200 degrees. I have some and have used it but not to that temp. The exhaust coming out your head can be 1300 degrees plus depending on your state of tuning. It might be worth a try just letting him know the first few inches may burn off. Thats all I got???

I used VHT Flameproof spray paint for my headers last October and it's doing great. I found this paint at a popular national chain auto parts store (can't remember which one). Can't remember how much I paid but seems to be about $9 a can online. This stuff has quite a few colors (including a clear coat) and heat ranges from 1000F-2000F. I've had gas, oil, brake fluid, and cleaners spill on the painted headers and haven't marked the paint yet. I did follow the directions closely which involves heating the painted parts in an oven before installation on the bike (heat..cool...heat...cool...heat...cool), very important.

I work at an advance and the vht is the best stuff to get. You will have to bake it in the oven if the bike isnt running but if it is running then you may have to modify the heating instructions on the can for a bike because I dont know if they will be the same. There is another one made by DEI but it is not that great and doesnt hold up well. Just take your time and follow the instructions and it will look like a professional powdercoating job for a lot less. Dont get the dupllicolor stuff either it flakes off after a month.

You could try some of this stuff. Been holding up real well for me. Comes in rattle cans.

Duplicolor Ceramic Coating from NAPA p/n DH1606

I used silver, but it comes in black too I'm pretty sure.

Thanks guys! I can tell the neighbor that I got some suggestions from you guys. They all sound like good ones. zlrider, those pipes look great! I have been telling my neighbor about this site and I don't think he quite gets how helpful a "group"of guys with the same bikes can be. I keep telling him he needs to find a site for the Honda 750f. I am sure they have one. Thanks for the info, Chris if you think of the name of the stuff you used, drop a line.
