Well if that is the case mine says FA000321 so I guess that is a low number.

I wonder what the difference is? could it be emissions because mine dosent have that on her. Maybe it is a tag for export,I dont know but maybe  . Do you think mine is a low number.

I have tried very unsuccessfully to get the numbers! I tried numerous times from Kawasaki, no luck. I tried the motorcycle commission, they have the numbers but will not share them!
The "A" depicts "California" model, slight emmissions difference.

I have the service manual suppllement for the ZL900 and ZL1000 and shows two models A1 and A2 and for cal. models you will find a cal. on the carbs and a canister behind the air box for emissioins and the mufflers will have ca on them.
Now the ZL1000-A1 is US and Canadian

from what I've read all the ZL come out of the USA
I have a CYCLE WORLD and CYCLE mag. from 1985 they call the ZL Kawawaski's daring new production drag bike. it's based off the old Z1 900 from the 70's

K-ray, are those the same articles that are in the "articles and advertisements" section here? If not, would like to see if you can scan and submit to Mark so we can read em!

If you look on the back of the Service manual it tells which numbers in the VIN indicate production sequence!

zl900 On the '85 model, FA indicates Cal. model. On the '86 is't GA.
FB and GB indicate 49 states model.

ZL1000 it is HA and HB.

Here is an interesting theory, I have an original '85 service supplement for the zl9 and I have a new supplement for the zl9/zl1k. Looking at the new one, the '86 zl9 vins reflect production numbers, 2301 for Cal. and 4701 for 49 states, I wonder if they produced that qty.???????

I will scan and submit them to Mark and from what I see all the ZL900 are FA and I'm sure mine is not a cal. bike. Now I got my Service manual from Kawi. right after I got the bike and when I was getting parts they said it was a 49 state bike.

They're not all FA K-Ray

JKAZL2A12FB503005, as shown in my sig.

Only references I've ever seen show FA as being the Cali model.
