View Full Version : Drilled Exhaust

Hello all,
While searching through the stuff for the tank info I found a sort of tutorial for drilling out the exhausts (for a different sound but keeping the look of the cans) that was made by Marcel Talsma that was sent to me. It's a Word document with pics on how to do it a couple of different ways. The file size is 640kb or so. If anyone has any interest, maybe I can send it to Mark so it can be looked at by anyone wanting to. Later.

It's a given that any mods done to a exhaust or intake usually require jetting.
For example, My bike has stock exhaust(slightly modified) and RC2774 pods. Yet i have a stage3 dynojet with the largest jet installed and it's still a tad lean. If you know this dynojet kit you'll know that some retailers package it with the K&N RC1824's and you'll also know the stage3 large jet goes with a 4into1 header or slip-ons. You're thinking; He has the largest jet installed and he's lean? The pods i'm using have more surface area and allow more air. That in conjunction with the modifed exhaust requires more fuel than the kit is designed for.
I would consider this mod for my exhaust since it is already modified. I won't do it until I have a extra set of stock mufflers in case I don't like the noise level. BTW I do mods because I got that Need for Speed!

Hey guys,
no, I don't know him personally. We used to email each other fairly often back in the KEGH days. I beleive he lives overseas somewhere - can't really remember as I haven't talked to him in a long time. Drilling the exhaust was a big topic back then and I just had him send me the info so I could save it in case someone wanted to see it. I never really found out anymore about it and he never came up with the sound file that I know of. I don't know if his email address is still any good or not but I'll try to contact him. Later.

Hey Mark,
same results here on contacting Marcel, evidently his email is not valid anymore. He still has pics up at the .org site and I posted a message there for his contact info - although there's not much going on over there as far as forum activity. I did see where he was from though - Almere, Netherlands. Maybe someone from the GB site or someone on KERA has his contact info. I don't think I ever saw him post or register at KERA though. Later.

I had almost the same info sent to me by a guy named Marc from the Netherlands. This was the email he sent:
Hello Mark,
Here are the pics.
The sound it will make is for your own responsibility, but it sounds really cool !!!!, like an ELI should.
Save the parts in case you want to place them back.
Marc
He also pointed out that it was extremely loud, I seem to remember he said it was loud enough to blow the tiles off a tunnel wall!! Personally I would leave what he called the 'grounding plate' in I think it looks better.

Seems it would be better to go with aftermarket and sell the originals to someone.

In all seriousness, pissing of the neighbors is one thing, but keep in mind the stock pipes are rated at something like 87 Decibels. OSHA states that anything over 100 Decibels requires hearing protection for exposures over two minutes. I'll guarantee you those straight through cans will be louder than 100Db. Likely more to the tune of 110Db, which you shouldn't be exposed to at all without hearing protection. I'll be the first to admit that 9 times outa 10 OSHA regulations are more trouble than they're worth, but I do happen to agree with that one. Cosiderind that most emergency vehicle sirens are only 110-115Db, I think I'll stick with aftermarket mufflers and enjoy my hearing for years to come. But you know what they say about opinions....

Wow.....I never thought I would see the day...SouthernStyle is the voice of reason...BTW, how loud are SuperTrapps? The reason I ask is I have a neighbor that just loves to start his POS beater with no muffler at 5am, and I can't wait till spring to return the F-ing favor...

Now boys, lets play nice. (With each other, screw the neighbors!) Moab, the volume of the trapps will depend on how many discs you're running. More discs, less back pressure and more noise. Less discs, more back pressure and less noise.
I don't know that I'd call it the voice of reason, but your ears will become acustomed to high levels of noise and start to tune it out, kinda like taking high powered pain killers. Just because you don't feel it doesn't mean you aren't hurt.
You get used to the noise after a few miles and think all is well, but it's still slowly damaging your hearing. After you lose your hearing it doesn't come back, it's gone for good.

What did you say SS, I couldn't quite hear you. Mine deafness could of come from wanking too much, oh ****, that's going blind isn't it? I don't know I couldn't read what I was writing.

I did the Mod. It's just a tad louder because mine was already drilled with ten 5/16" holes or so around the main opening. Also on closer inspection mine is punched out down inside where you see the two 3/4" pipes coming through. I'm thinking about removing that plate as well because they did such a ****ty job. It sounds good n throaty, nice rumble and will get some unwanted attention from the APD :D

Went for a test run yesterday. The noise is bearable and could stand to be louder even yet :D
As for performance it's hard to tell, can't get any traction in the cold weather :walk:
