I was wondering how many of our bikes have been modified from the original.

I'm desperately trying to keep my ZL1000 absolutely stock (difficult these days with parts becoming scarce) but I know that quite a few others have done so many mods that they are becoming unrecognisable as an Eliminator, not that there's anything fundamentally wrong with that.

Sometimes I feel I'm the only one with an original bike

So....Come on guys.........Who likes 'em straight and who's bike is now a Yamkawsuki

Not that parts were unavailable, I just wanted to 'amp up' the performance a little bit, I will have Supertrapp exhaust, stage 3 with pods, prolly Dyna ignition (for now adjustable advance), new paint, new (re-covered) seat, Spiegler brake lines, different turn signals, all LED lights (if possible), Progressive suspension front and rear, and eventually....Fuel Injection....I also am going to try to widen a stock tank for extra runs down the strip between re-fills...But all things considered, it will be a modified stock appearance, but will still maintain the unmistakeable ZL look and feel...
I love the stock bikes, in fact my parts went to stock restoration....2 of them actually, so now there are 2 stock ZL's to my 1 modified....A fair trade...

I am shooting for absolute stock, but parts are hard to find, (Rad shroud and frame plastic), so best I can hope for this year is "Stock Apearing"
but stock or not I have the best seat...........hahahahahahaha

K&N RC2774 Pods
Slightly Modified stock exhaust

My Scoot is close, with parts so difficult to come by maybe it will never be 100% stock but it won't be from lack of wanting or trying. My seats still good to go but I wouldn't consider a re-covered seat as being a non-stock bike Rick.

Stock, i have made some modifications to my other 900, but have all the original parts left to put them back when needed.

In my opinion it is hard to make the 900 look better than what it looks on
stock :D

The only thing at the moment that isn't stock on mine is dials and light, or in my case dial and lights. I'll post pics soon. You can't blame in on me though, it was all done before I got the bike.

I will probably be getting a custom exhaust soon as mine is on the way out. Luckily a friend of mine has welded all the holes up for now.

so not only am I the only one with a green n gold ELI it seems I'm the only one with a completely stock bike - however can't wait to change the airbox for the K&N filters simply cos they look cool. pictures of Markzl900's bike inspired me plus I remember the sound it used to make on my very old 1275gt - sweet

OK , my red ZL1000 is completly stock except for a windshield, my black ZL1000 has a windshield, am/fm- cd player, hole shot exhausts and jet kit, my ZL600 has pods and K&N jet kit and a windshield. Does my Kawasaki Voyager count for mods or not? Ok I will not include it. Furchin

That's it, I need a bigger garage so I can have a few more toys. I need 2 more bikes, a modified ZL to complement my stock ZL so I can tinker with the modified one, then something like the Connie 14 for long trips. And if I win the lottery and have money to waste, a V-ROD just so I can say I own a Harley.

I have two stock Zl1000's at the moment.
Plan to keep one stock and modift the other. Uprate front brakes, change collector box / pipes and fit K&N's.
may go further - depends on time more than anything else.

My ZL 900 is stock for now. I enjoy tinkering so it will get a few things done. Exhaust is still a limiting factor to me. I like the performance of a aftermarket pipe, but want the looks of the stockers. :dontknow:
Rear shocks and fork brace first I think

I'm getting around that by getting some exhausts custom made, providing he can fab the mufflers to look like originals, which I've been told he can. As soon as I've got the money saved up then I'll get it done and let you all know.

YEAH i know how you feel ! i say, that i'm going to keep every motorcycle i buy stock, but once i start with any small change to personalize, the inner demons take over, & i go crazy !

to make a long story short, my bikes always keep the stock look in appearance(mostly), but i have never owned a motorcycle, that i did'nt shell out lots of $$$$$ for engine mods, & i never tell what i did, but, honestly, on my daughters life, i do not know yet, what has been done to my bike by previous owner, but i do know, " it definately, is not stock! "

I'm changing the color and the seat and I have pods, but
I have the old seat and there will always be black paint so I can restore it back to a stock look if I want to.
I like seeing the ideas that other people have had in moding their bikes. Some of them look very cool.

.

I have a modified tank.

The sides were cut off and tear shapes added.

Then repained and original decals replaced. Looks factory actually except for the purists out there.

I love it when someone who knows a ZL900 sees it and can't quite figure out what he sees. Something's there - what is it?

Kinda like loosing a couple of pounds and getting a hair trim.

So the back of the tank is the same basically but the sides bulge outward slightly.

Doesn't really effect the riding feel at all and I get another 100+ miles on a ride.

Sometimes I'd like to have an original stock tank just to have one.

I'll never change the pipes. Ruins the look in my humble opinion.

.

ZLKawBoy
01-30-2008, 01:28 PM
I've been asked to post some pics of my tank ...

I will in the near future.

It's pretty cool job - unless you're a ZL eccentric a normal rider thinks it's factory ...

Jarney
01-30-2008, 08:08 PM
Yeah, pics of the tank would be great, sounds very interesting according to the description. Never really thought about that, get creative with the tank to get a few extra miles without really losing the look......hmmmmm........Later.

I'm a big stinkerer oopss I mean tinkerer. But actually prefer the stock look of the ZL1000 with only minor changes here and there. The ZL600 how ever was changed quite a bit by the previous owner and am putting many of the stock items back on OEM/Aftermarket repro's.
The turn signals for instance are going back to the original style as the ones the idiot put on werent the bright LED kind but some cheapo peanut bulb type like the old dash lights from my old 63 ford you couldnt see them hardly even at 10 feet away!!
Also he put aftermarket drag bars on which are bent and since my G/F doesnt like leaning over the tank to drive I am trying to find stock bars for hers as well as mine as the ones on my ZL1000 are bent also. (my bike was wrecked and they didnt bother telling me I had to find out the hard way)
