View Full Version : To Smoke or not to Smoke?

I was just curious on the amount of smokers vs non-smokers here and your feelings on smoking. In Ohio they passed a smoking ban which will take effect in June. Currently they are making the rules for it now(Should have been done before the vote, lol) With my job and my dependancy on smoking this ban will really make it a pain in the ass to be a smoker! So I have decided to join the majority of the people and quit.
I'm 40 yrs old now and have been smoking since I was a teenager. My father died from smoking in 01' At that time I was a non-smoker. I quit smoking in July of 96' and was a non-smoker for 7 years. I went through divorce in 2003 and quite often was around people smoking. I never thought I could pick this nasty habit up again but I did. You know with me all it took was one cigarette to start me back up. Don't get me wrong, I like smoking. What I don't like is the chemical dependancy I now feel when I don't smoke. Hell I'd smoke regularly if I felt I could. It would be nice to have a beer and a smoke on occasion but I know that ain't gonna happen!
Well with a little help from a prescription called Chantix I have kicked the habit again. This time I know that I cannot and will not smoke! It's been almost 2 weeks since my last smoke and I'm doing very well with it. The Chantix really works. It blocks cravings, it blocks them so well I forget to take them!
Please take time to comment on this topic, wish me luck, and answer the poll
A smoking ban is coming into effect in the UK this year as well. It's going to be a ban on smoking in any enclosed public building. To be able to smoke in a building it has to have at least half of it's sides open.
I'm an ex smoker, I started smoking when I was about 13 and quit about 2 months before my 16th. People smoking around me doesn't bother me, the only thing that bothers me about it is the fact that my clothes always reek when I get home. So that'll be one advantage of the ban, I can go to a pub and not have to have a shower and change of clothes as soon as I get in.
Good Luck Mark, let us know how it goes.

The city I work in just passed a smoking ban, which makes doing outdoor shows a big pain in the ass. I guess I need to join the ranks of the reformed and let that habit go. Good luck with your quest Mark!

The smoking ban in all enclosed spaces has had quite an effect here in Sunny Scotland.
If you own a vehicle and use that vehicle for work related purposes you are not allowed to smoke in it???????IN YOU OWN BLOODY VEHICLE for christs sake!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also, since we are not allowed to smoke in pubs now, it makes going for a beer on a Friday/Saturday night a terrifying experience. Mainly because you now get massive groups of people all hanging about outside the pubs having a smoke, :detective: not too bad you might think untill you realise that all these groups probably have a history of hating each other, and they're all http://webpages.charter.net/connectingzone/food/23.gifhttp://webpages.charter.net/connectingzone/food/23.gifhttp://webpages.charter.net/connectingzone/food/23.gifFULL OF BEER!!!!!!! America....Land of the Free and Home of the Brave.....As long as you don't smoke on the street, or your car, or at the bar, or in a restaurant, or on your porch, or on your bike, or in the park.....Shall I go on?
I agree it's silly to pass these ridiculous laws and dictate what people do to their bodies, although, in this day and age, if you smoke for 40 years and get cancer, it's not your fault, because noone in this country is accountable for any of the stupid-assed **** they do, it's always someone elses friggin' fault....I hate this day and age...You ****ED UP....You smoked for 40 ****ING YEARS, IT'S not anyone's fault but YOURS, ASSHAT!!!!!

Come on Moab, we're all friends here. Tell us how ya really feel about it.
I see the Gov. of Texas, I think, has made it a law that teen girls attending public schools get vaccinated for the STD that causes cervical cancer. Great idea, maybe we can rid the state of Texas from this plague. Or maybe it's a politiical favor, and the citizens of the Lone Star state are now legally obligated to have their daughters injected with a new experimental substance that will damage their reproductive system and cause other new medical problems? Wait, what am I saying?! Surely no Texas politician would do something like that. Would they?
Getting back to the subject of smoking, would someone Please give Mrs. Nowak a cigarette so she won't feel the need to drive from Texas in diapers 900 miles to Orlando airport to kick her boyfriend's girlfriend's ass. Please!
Okay, done now.

I've posted this before but I'll say it again. One thought that should help you smoker's quit (those that want too) should be the thought of a 19 year old kid trashing on your rides once your gone. Almost happened to the '85 ZL900 that I have. My brother died at the age of 37 after years of smoking, and he actually had quit for a year prior to his sudden death. He had the '85 with only 5k miles on it. I had an '86 but totalled it in 1993 and hadn't rode since. I was married at the time of his death and my wife forbid me to get another bike because of totalling mine. The bike almost went to his estranged daughter's boyfiend because he saw it and thought it would be fun to trash around on it. Well before things were done and settled, my wife asked for a divorce and the first thing I did was got my hands on the bike. I didn't even ride it or start it for the first three years of having it. But now its back and running, somewhat, but what can you expect for a 20+ year old bike. I even trailered it to Mid-Ohio last year and rode it around all day in the heat.

Well, I am also one of those nasty smokers! I started when I was 11 or 12, stealing em from the folks when I didnt have the $.45 to buy em! I quit when I developed a serious upper respiritory infection in 1997. I took a new job in 1998 and within 4 months I was puffin again. I have tried quitting a couple times in the past 3 years with no luck! I may just have to go to the doc for some drugs! Keep us posted on the results Mark and good luck to ya Bro.

I was a 20-30 a day smoker, smoking since I was 17. 37 now.
I'm off them 2.5 years at the end of this month and I'm glad to have kicked them. No patches, no drugs. My kid (5 yrs old at the time) told me it was a stupid thing to do it and asked me to stop.... The kid had more sense than I did!
So thats what I did, threw the half empty pack in the bin and that was that. The first 4 weeks were brutal, the following few months it got better and after about 7-8 months, I stopped thinking about them altogether.
I still find myself getting slight urges for a smoke though, especially after a hard day at work or waiting in an airport or even out with friends. (Thats made a bit easy over here though with the smoking ban in pubs & restaurants.)
"If you want to... you can".
Just keep it going mark, one day at a time buddy... its a long road.

I'll add my 2 cents. I was the same as a lot of you, started early in my teens, maybe a year earlier. Stole the occasional smoke from my parents (both smoked) and was a pack a day until my early thirties. Then I settled down, got married and had a kid. I was determined to make sure my boy wasn't subjected to the smoke that I was and I quit cold turkey. It's been 10 years and now I can smell the smokers from two cars up while goin down the freeway. It's almost like I have this sensitivity to smoke, makes me a bit queasy, but you realize how much the smoke permeates everything. Yes, I did put on some weight, but I don't get tired humping the golf bag around the course anymore. Also for you guys thinking of quitting, nicotene has a numbing effect on the body. Once you quit, parts of the body -- read big Jim and the twins -- are a lot, uhh, happier so to speak. Think about that the next time you light up.

Mark, if you have any left over pills, send them my way. I NEED to quit.Sorry man, My girlfriend has finally decided to try. She was getting the chest pains real bad after 2 days no smoking. I had these last time i tried to quit and let me tell ya they make a grown man cry. With the Chantix I had no chest pains whatsoever. She took a 1/2 pill of mine and has been taking 1/2 pills a day and has not had pains or cravings, the **** just works simple as that.
Go to the doc SD and get some. the $ you save in a years worth of smokes will pay for your prescription ten-fold.
Look at me. $4 a day to smoke. $4x365 days=$1460 Now that will buy a lot of beers!!! :groupcheers: :groupcheers:

Sighhh ... am a slave to the "gaspers" here too unfortunately ...
Started in my early teens like many others ... gave up for a year before/during/after serious back surgery. My ortho surgeon said he wouldn't operate if I was still smoking when the back op was scheduled because of the risks involved.
Off work for 18 months, ('92/'93), while the back healed ... then back to work. On the way to work one morning I double parked, rushed into the shop .. grabbed a newspaper and back out to the car. On went the seatbelt, indicator on, back out into traffic .. 'twas then I realised I'd bought a pack of smokes with the paper and had opened it and lit up as I started off in the car again, without even realising it ... absolutely pure habit!!!
Long story short .. still on them .. seems/feels even harder now to give 'em up. Am medically retired, so spend my days "tinkering" ... fiddling with the computers, surfing the net, smoking and drinking coffee.
Damn, just sitting here reading back over what I've written makes me wanna make a doctors appointment this coming week and see if I can get some pills or something to toss the bloody things once and for all.
The bike is sitting in the shed unregistered .. just did a "calc" .. the rego equals 33 packs of ciggies!!! I think I feel sick :o(

I'm sure you and your partner will pull through ok, zlmark, and you both feel better for it in the long run, to say nothing of the extra money you'll save after you've stop buying the pills.
__________________________________________________ ___________
I hear what your saying, ross.
Since being on my extended forced holiday from work, things are really starting to look scary, money-wise. The money stress keeps mounting up and having a puff makes be calm down for while, but ultimately, it comes back.
I bought my last packet of smokes yesterday, then I have to go cold turkey, no choice in the matter, no money = no smokes. I'm barely scratching to make headway with my normal monthly expenses. My food will start to run out in a week, then I'll be in full-on poverty mode, scrounge up a 20kg bag of spuds and snare some wild rabbits for dinner (good thing they don't have RCV or Mixy here). I've got one bottle of muscat left, then no grog to calm the nerves either.
I can't get on the rock and roll (dole), due to my partner working, the "Dept of Social Security" reckons she is supposed to support me financially, we're not married, but they reckon it's up to her to support me financially, not them (we have always had separate finances and split the difference with power, etc), and due to the end of fiscal year ending, no one is hiring, let alone interested in a over forty year old, so the only option I have eat potatoes and rabbits, give up the smokes and ride it through until things get better after the new fiscal year starts, which is only a week away.
I'm selling the occasional thing on eBay to make ends meet, but it's only barely enough. I've got five loan repayments on the ZL1K in reserve, which I'll start to use this week, and if I don't get work in the next five weeks, she'll probably be repossessed by the finance company. Hopefully, I can sell the car or the farm ute or something substantial in the interim, but it's always dodgy this time of year.
I tell ya, it's a bloody good thing I don't own a gun...
I suppose there's one consolation, if I stay quit, the chest and arm pains will slowly go away and I'll be able to work even harder without it knocking me for a six. My partner (who doesn't smoke, but's a reformed smoker of 15 years) will be able to stand kissing me again, too, haha!!!
Mick.

I won't ever sell the ZL1K, but they'll have to re-possess her over my dead body though. I reckon there's not much point in owning the worlds greatest motorbike and not being able to enjoy it because I'm six feet under, is there.
...but hopefully it will never come to that.
nah, she'll be right mate, it'll come good soon. It's gotta...

YEAH ! i'm a smoker too ! I WANT TO QUIT SOON ! i agree with moab, i hate politicians !!!!!! i don't like being dictated ! don't get me wrong, but think about it, when you go to a bar, or pub, drinking & smoking go hand in hand ! same thing when you go to a bowling alley, you & your bro's drink beer & bowl. now i am for non-smokers rites too ! i believe you should'nt have to be around second hand smoke, but statisticly in the majority of bars, pubs & bowling alleys there are more smokers, than non-smokers, so because of a few non-smokers bitchin, the smokers are now forced to go outside to light up, leaving a smaller number of people inside. is this fair ??? if you are a non-smoker, & cannot handle being around smokers, dont go into places where you know the majority of people are smoking !!!!!!! to make it fair for everyone, i think businesses should have smoking & non-smoking sections so we all can enjoy ourselves ! however, i do agree with no smoking in resturants CHRIS

i havet read all of the posts, so soz if this is a "re-post"
neways, i am a non-smoker and hate smokers, can't really stand them. that is the person might be decent, but i hate the 'secondary smoke'. coz it not only affects themselves, but also the person close to them. its like killing the people around you for no reason. but i can understand why people smoke so i put up with it.
i am for smoking bans, but also would like places for smokers to go to where they can happily smoke away because i dont like the idea of stopping people smoking against their will, just makes the problem worse though
Congratulations Mark. Congratulations Mick.

I know what those cravings are like, i took up smoking at 10 and smoked until 40 with the odd break in between. Each time i stopped it was cold turkey, but i had to wait until i wanted to stop and not because someone told me to. Interesting thread ...
Nashville just passed a law of no smoking inside. Now the streets are full of smoke !!! It's sadly hillarious.
I had an aunt that never smoked, never drank, was a regular church goer, was a homemaker and passed away of cancer in her 50s. Explain that one.
Did you know that the surgen general in the mid 80's issued the long study "Health In America" where they found that cigar and pipe smokers statistically live LONGER than non-smokers??? Explain that one.
Basically, it's not the tobacco but more than the additives in the tobacco.
My grandad is 94 and smoked a pipe constantly all his life.
His brother chain smoked filterless camels all his life and died a year after having one lung removed at 70 something years old. (He kept chain smoking after he had the lung removed)
General statistics show that if you smoke, you have a one in three chance of dying of cancer. It's also the same with non-smokers.
Just flip a coin and get it over with ...
THAT SAID -
I DON'T like -
"born-again" smokers (those who quit and nag everyone else)
Socialism that thinks governments can take care of me better than I can.
Helmet laws (although I always wear a helmet)
Politicians that think they need to take care of me rather than serve me.
Politicians who think we have freedom FROM speach rather than freedom OF speach. (think about that one)
The Dixie Chicks for the same reason.
Uh ... did I mention politicians ???
I DO like -
Riding my ZL ... with a helmet of MY choosing ...
Hugs from my wife and daughter.
Riding my ZL.
An all mohogany guitar through a marshall amp set on "11".
Riding my ZL.
Expresso.
Riding my ZL.

My dad passed away in 2002, at 88, after years and years of smoking. In the last many years of his life, he lived with an Ileostomy, a result of the cancer spreading to his lower body. I quit smoking tobacco products clear back in the '80s when I saw what it had done to my dad, a close friend's mother, and other people.
I have to agree with TSST - just ain't worth it. That's my choice not to smoke, and I chose not to. If you choose to, that's your choice. Just not worth it for me.

I smoked for years and years. Started in High School and FINALLY quit almost 2 years ago. (Will be two years in June!)
Best of luck in quitting! I quit MANY times over the course of a few years. It's hard. All I can offer is that when your body is finally ready to be done with them, you'll quit without needing ANYTHING. That's what happened to me at least.
When I first quit, I could stand around smokers and it didnt' bother me at all. It didn't make me want a smoke either. It was like I was completely neutral to it. After about 6 months though, I started getting irritated by smoke and the smell. Now, almost two years later, I can smell a smoker from about 20' and can't stand to be in bars or smokey concerts.
Best of luck though! If you quit and go back to smoking, don't be too hard on yourself. It's a rough process. Just pick yourself up, wait a little while and then try again. Quitting smoking is VERY hard on your body. Talk to your doctor about it too if you have that option!

I tried once and couldn't understand why anyone would smoke cigarettes. It didn't do anything, but make me sick. The other stuff at least helped my aches, pains, hungers, movies, music,sex.....sorry it's supposed to be medicinal.
Quit that stuff too.
--Anyhow, here in Upstate N.Y. the smoking ban has been great.I work as a sound guy(on the side) and I think of all the years taking in second and third hand smoke. My dad died of pancreatic cancer at 57yro.Smoking is the biggest factor(who knew)...and working at the Kodak research building.By the way, my mom, who worked at Kodak also, got breast cancer...she had symptoms the same month as my father ,and they were diagnosed within a week of each other. They were divorced and living in two different states.Smoking and Kodak both suck my a**.By the way, good luck finding any correlation of Kodak and cancer clusters in Rochester.Money buys a lot of secrecy."Hey where's Bin Laden? I don't know, he just dropped off ten million dollars and information about arms trade deals between us and Russia...I can't seem to find him now."
--To explain the enclosed area ban...if you smell smoke, the objects or room are off-gassing.This means the toxins in the smoke settled on the objects and are now being released.I work for the fire department and 8yrs. ago we were told we could not keep our bunkers next to our bunks at night anymore, because of off-gassing.Health officials felt we were sucking in more carcinogens while we slept. This is why the laws state no in smoking in vehicles, the smoke will affect innocent non-smokers, long after a smoker is done.Hey, if no one will ever get in your car...Have at it.

In the past 5 yrs I've lost 3 friends to smoking related illness (lung cancer) I will talk down smoking and cigaret manufactures when ever I can.
If you want to smoke that is one thing but when the manufactures put adicting agents into thhem to keep you hooked that is anouther.
Quite while you still can.

I lost a little over two thirds of my right lung to cancer when I was 19. I didn't smoke then but started like an idiot when I was 35. I'm 41 now and I haven't had one since mothers day, best present Mom said she ever got. I been riding my bicycle to help, if your sucking air like a freaking hoover the last thing you want is a cigarette. Plus I've lost 20 lbs. :hello2:

Way to go "Jarhead", best of luck with it, just use some of that "semper Fi" attitude and you can do it. :headbang:
