Woohoo ... :D :D
Went for a short ride this afternoon .. just to see how I'd cope after the heart surgery. All went well, minimal increase in pain etc .. no doubt if I hit a pothole or similar .. the thump back through the bars will more than make its presence felt :pale:
Having spoken to the physio at cardio-rehab last week, the main reason the medicos say a timeframe of 10-12 weeks post-op before riding the bike is ... general pain level tolerance AND the risk of splitting the sternum/breastbone open in the event of an "off"/crash!!
I figure ... I'm 51yo .. have had spinal fusion surgery and now the heart bypass surgery ... I mean seriously ... if I have an "off"/crash on the bike ... I'll be going to hospital anyways!!! Like derrrrrr hahaha
Riding a bike is and always has been a calculated risk at the best of times .. the way I see it ... carefully wrestling the bike around at this relatively early stage, (8-1/2 weeks post-op), is a form of physiotherapy! I know for sure it's a form of emotional/spiritual therapy!!
Getting my body used to the sort of movement riding entails ... gently ... over the next 2 weeks or so will hopefully enable me to take part in our annual "Pink Ribbon Ride" in aid of breast cancer research.
It's a ride I've taken part in for the last few years ... and is the last ride my mate of 20 years and I did last year, only 3 weeks before he lost his battle with the "Big C"! So I really, REALLY want to be able to do this years ride.
Anyways ... enough babbling on ... am just happy to be back on the bike .. and now (6 hours after my tentative trial ride) I'm still not feeling any heightened pain levels .. YAY!!
Dang ... it's good to be back woohoooooooooo
Cheers,
