IN...... County Wicklow, on the East coast of Ireland. No more than 75 miles from Dublin ferry port so no big milage to be put on the bikes if you dont want to (on this side anyway)... read - not lookin for fuel stations every 100 miles...lol. Wicklow mountains got some beautiful scenery, nice roads. Very popular with touring bikers in this area.

Might even sink a few of these as we're at it....
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u194/Blagadain/beer.jpg
A couple of days at the end of this coming March, Easter weekend.... That gives us 11 weeks to get some cash together....
If you want, I'll arrange stuff on this side, accomodation, routes, fuel stops, women... (just kidding...) I'd suggest maybe booking a place in the middle of Wicklow. A town called Laragh is a good spot. Apparently theres a few small hotels popular with bikers there. Use it as a base for a few daily rides in the "back country" as the yanks would say. Stay off the main roads stick to the smaller country lanes and scenic routes, followed by food & beer of course when we return with a thirst in the evening...
I'll trailer my ZL up to Laragh, and ride the rest of the way up to meet ye at the ferry in Dublin. At least that way, if someone has bike problems, i'll have tools n trailer just in case they're needed...
Whaddya say brethern...????? Lets give MOAB a new "HI MOAB" photo for him to cherish, with some faces he hasnt seen yet......lol
Gotta put this by my missus too btw, so we'll all be in THAT boat together too...lol
K-K came up with this idea early this week and hats off to him for coming up with it it! :puttside:
Let me know if this is a runner......

Passport greg, I dunno. A drivers licence might do but you'd be a whole lot better off checkin with the authorities in the uk...
Hows about a pin badge to mark the occasion of the first group meeting of the zl-oa in europe? (if it really happens??)

If it does happen then a pin badge would be great Blag.

I cant speak for this road in the pic LL cos I haven't ridden it myself. I didnt take that photo. But generally yeah, they tend to use coarse aggregate on the secondary roads here, improves longevity I'm told. Unfortunately, the last 10 years or so, instead of doing a proper resurfacing job on some of the secondary roads, they patch the bad bits and spray tar over the whole lot, pressing in 1/2in - 3/4in aggregate into the tar. Its a horrible rough finish, but cheap. it is really loud to drive on, you get a bunch of road noise up through the chassis. The road in pic 2 looks like a proper laid tarmac surface, not in the majority here in Ireland I'm afraid.
Looking at the pic LowLife, I'd say there was some photoshop work done on it, maybe the owner of the pic hit the 'sharpen' button a few times too many.
There are some stretches of roads that they are using a different kind of coarse stuff to help remove the surface water from the road when it rains. The rain runs down THROUGH the surface and drains under instead of running across the surface and into gulleys. This is good, it really works.
I'll have a proper look when I'm there in March LowLife!!!

Hello, Blag! I'm glad that you liked my photos from Co. Wicklow. I took the large-format ones at the top of your post (numbers 3 and 5-8) during August, 2006, during a 5-week stay in Ireland. This Yank can vouch for what you say: the Co. Wicklow countryside is perfect for backroads adventures (on however many wheels you've got.)
It's a lovely island you've got there, Blag, and I hope to get back there again someday.

Don't know if I can make it, which is why I sent a private message first rather than the public forum. Didn't want to get everybody's hopes up. Obviously I'll be making every effort to be there, but finances play a HUGE part in it. Will let you know when I've done all the sums.
On the wife's computer at the moment as mine has a virus and may have to do a complete re installation, so I may be around a little less 'till I get it fixed.

Hi ACP,
I'm going to wait for guys to confirm they are on for this ride. It may be a bit early for confirmation yet so sitting on it at the mo.
I think Easter IS the the date.. DO you guys in the UK have a different easter weekend to us over here?
I am going to say "YES" I am going, so that is one name confirmed!!!
It seems to be a little bit more interest in the Scotland ride out so if thats more popular then I'd be just as happy to go over to that one instead... I wont be able to do both. I'm easy either way.
blag
I'm happy to do either. Put me down for a big YES as well Blag. If it's going ahead then I need to know the dates soon as I need to book them off as early as possible.
I haven't got a clue when Easter weekend is, I'm the stereotypical bloke that's crap with dates and events.

Easter Monday is March 24th by my calendar. So the weekend of Friday 21st to Monday 24th would be the dates. I guess its up to guys schedules to see if they travel on Friday or Saturday...? Post up which day to travel would suit you?
If you guys can confirm by say the second week in Feb at the latest, that would be great, I can get some options on accomodation - Hotel, B&B etc. I know this area is popular in Easter, the sooner were in the more options are available. The town I have in mind is situated in the heart of the Wicklow Mountain National Park and is a popular chioce on bank holiday weekends.
It would be great to assemble as many members as possible...
Thus far confirmed on the "BIG YES" list-
1. Blag
2. ACP
As is usual with my shift pattern, I'm working that weekend, 22nd-25th. Ah well, I'll let you know if my manager accepts my leave request.

OK....Here's the best I can figure it
Fuel, Aberdeen to Dublin & back..£120
Ferry.........................................£10 0
Accomodation @£50 per night......£150
Get bike ready, MOT, Ins etc.......£200
Equals almost £600
Can't do Ireland at Easter, (too soon after Christmas) BUT,
if it was swapped round, I could do Ireland in summer and Scotland at Easter, but then that would impact on the guys from down south in exactly the same way I guess.

Its an idea....
I'm still up for it.
Roughly 230 miles to Holyhead from here. Fill up roughly every 80 miles, that's 3 stops, 3rd being at the nearest petrol station to the ferry.
Fuel from Bristol to Holyhead and back - roughly £60-£70
Ferry - £100 max.
Accomodation, unsure. I might be needing to go to Holyhead on the thursday and stay the night if I want to catch the earlier ferry on the friday.
So far it's looking good. I don't mind paying that kind of price for a good trip. And with my shifts, I'm off work from the 18th anyway, so I have a few days to relax and get ready. Then I'm back in work on the 30th, so I'll have a while to relax on the way back as well.
Depends on how many other people are able to go though.

Yeah, 3-4 members at least would be the makings of a good craic. How many UK zl-oa members are active posters/ potentially up for it? I thought there'd be more interest in this to be honest...I'd prefer to postpone the Ireland ride and do the Scotland ride out in the summer if there were more of the guys interested in that one... Make for a better event to kick a few extra ZL tyres.... (NTM having a bit of extra time to get the funds together)
Which reminds me, i need a new front tyre... ****e... :pale:

I'M WORKIN ON IT!!!
Had a chat with a bloke early today and he suggested some routes to go on. South of Dublin for sure in the "Wicklow Mountain National Park". A pure haven for bikers. Good surfaces I'm told with twisties and unreal views... I must nail down some routes and post them up here. Going to put up the question again on the Biker.ie web site about routes to get some ideas from the locals that go up there every weekend.
I was up there about 15 years ago with my brother, Me on my FZR and him on his TZR... It was mad, like our own private race track. Been threatning to go back there for years... Deffo be at a more sedate pace this time though...lol
It would be great to get another couple of lads here to join us... I'll have to book rooms soon as the closer we get to Easter, the harder it will be to get cheap accomodation. I made a few calls today about accomodation but I dont have prices yet. i mentioned 5 rooms just on spec but to be confirmed when we know exactly how many from here are goin...
COME ON THE REST OF YOU!!! Any more takers...?

A link to their website:-
http://www.lynhamsoflaragh.ie/index.html
For 21st, 22nd and 23rd March, (Fri, Sat, Sun)
Single room, €75euro (£55), per night single room and they have 3 single rooms available right now.
For a double room €75euro (£55) Per Person Sharing.
For a double room, single occupancy €75euro + €20euro surcharge.
Price includes breakfast.
Secure area to put the bikes according to the receptionist.
It has a bar & restaurant and Live music Sat eve.
SO thats the first option, I've been ringing around a lot of B&B's but most are not open for business yet (winter season) and wont give a price straight away... Waiting on a few call backs. I got one price of €70euro pps from one B&B so the hotel above is looking very good so far... I was hoping to find a B&B for around €50euro a night, I'll let you know if/when I do...
OR if you are happy with £50-60 night than I'll book this one soon...?

Yeah, I know. Thought I'd put it out there anyway. €50 a head B&B would be more in line.
I'm right down south, 20 miles from the coast . Not so much here to see as far as scenic routes are concerned. Sure theres scenic spots alright but not one beautiful vista after another. I usually wind up driving north West (Limerick/Galway) for the scenery or over West to Kerry or West Cork. I figured Wicklow mountains would be good as it seems to be a bikers playground, and with our time limited, I thought it would be a good spot. But sure if ye want to venture further, yeah, I'm on for it.
Newbridge would be a good spot for a base alright.
Dont forget, theres only 2 full days for ride outs that weekend. (Friday would be used up mostly travelling. Saturday and Sunday free to ride, Monday more or less to pack up and return home.) It being March it will probably get dark around 6.30-7pm ish?
I'll suggest a few scenic areas.
Wicklow has lots.
Galway has some.
Kerry has tons. (ring of kerry on a sunny day.....awsome)
West Cork coastal area has lots.
Waterford has lots.
Athlone has some.
Donegal has lots.
Problem is you have to drive on 2-3 hours of busy & mundane roads to get to these spots. TBH, I've never found the midlands of Ireland to be interesting to drive.
