For all you that have been there many times... Does anyone have some "tips" for someone (me) that will be going for the first time? Where is the best place to stay? Are there nice/close hotels? Other things to do in the area? Where exactly is it? If I'm a "noobie" do I need to bring beer for all you guys....:laughing7: I'm a Jack drinker so you can have the beer..
Thanks in advance!!

the majority of us have been staying at a local hotel a few miles from track. paulfun stayed at a campground this past year, & i think i may pack up the motorhome & stay at the campground for the 2009 VMD to save a little money. i spent way too much at VMD 2008, but we'll see ! if you go the hotel route ? you need to book a room early ! they fill up fast !!!! Funny, just asked my son three days ago if he was interested in going again. He said yes, that he had a great time. Would love to do the camping thing, since he an I haven't camp out since he was in cub scouts.
paulfun
11-14-2008, 06:55 PM
Rammy the camping is the way to go!
I had a camp site at a campground this year and the cost for a four day stay was less than what some payed for a single night in the hotel !
Will be doing the same this year as well but probably use a tent instead of hauling the camper the hole way and hopefully bring both bikes instead of just one.

And I`d prefer NOT riding my bike through mud and dust.

And I`d prefer NOT riding my bike through mud and dust. That campground was cleaner than the inn-field for sure.. Don't know about showers...I was thinking of camping this year
paulfun
11-14-2008, 11:18 PM
Yes the camp ground was nice and clean. Showers at the top of hill were brand new. The showers at the bottom of the hill not so great, but still useable.
I can understand the need for air conditioning and all that. Just that I am a tight a-s when it comes to spending money so as a substitute for air conditioning, when reserving the camping spot I always ask for a shady spot under a tree.

I will be there come hell or high water!
A couple guys that worked for me in Ohio are good friends with the owners of the campground that Paul stayed at. If we want to reserve a section of the campground I can make that happen! I will need to know in the next couple months so I can contact them and set it up. I will be staying there this year as well. Hoping that all us Minn members can caravan to Ohio for '09 and the caravan can grow as we head East!

Does the camp ground have electric hookups. My brother got a camper this year.I'm tring to talk him into going.I figure if I offer to pull it over, and let him ride one of the bikes, how could he say no.(lol)How much was it to stay at the camp ground?

I just had another idea  *I know scary isn't it!* Anyway my big idea which I am sure someone mentioned before but maybe didnt figure out a way to actually do it. Is for those of us going to M/O to send like 2 or 3 people to the place that was alotted for us and get set up without the bikes and then leave and meet up with the rest of the group about 10 miles away on some back road and then all ride in to the vintage days together! Wouldnt that turn heads! LOL would be so cool if we could get like 20-30 of us to all roll in together and file into our patch of M/O. :headbang:   Corny I know maybe I should just :ignore: ! lol

The campground does have elec. Sites. Not sure if we can get primitive and modern sites next to each other? What we do need is a commitment from members ASAP so we can contact them and start sending deposits for the weekend!
CHRIS

i'm definately in, this way i can save some money over hotel prices, & blow the money at the track !!! CHRIS
paulfun
12-04-2008, 06:06 PM
found my reciept. The cost was 99.00 with tax for fri, sat, sunday stay with electric hook up for my camper.
Putt most camp sites let you have one small tent alongside a camper. Most dont charge extra for it but some do.
The cost of a site with electric isnt very much more per nite so if we all get spots next to each other it still wont be cost prohibative to put a tent or two on a spot with electric.
I will try and call and get the rates for this year tommorrow if I have time.
You can reserve a spot the same as you do a hotel room with your credit card.
That does not sound bad at all.I'll do some checking and let you know for sure.

The answering service still says jellistone, but also says no reservations are being accepted till march
Jarney
01-21-2009, 06:14 PM
Might be worth petitioning them though. From '85 - '87 they have no kawasaki's listed and it says above "at least one from every year the Association has been in existence". It also says "A machine may make the list for what it meant in that very moment" and "or because, looking back, it made a true impact as a landmark machine". With the exception of the vmax and the fz they are all sportbikes. '87 only has a honda hurricane - surely given the above statements and only one bike listed for '87, the zl 1000 fits the bill to be in the parade also. I can understand with mr. max in there that they would probably never put the zl900 in but maybe if you give them a shout they will consider the zl1000. Anyway, just thought I would throw it out there. Later.

Although I just bought my first Eliminator 2 weeks ago, and just joined the forum, I'm thinking pretty hard about coming down this year. I'm turning 21 the week before VMD and I think it would be a fun way to spend one of my first legal weekends...
It's only a 3.5hr ride from my house. Any advice on what I need to do to make arrangments? I'd be looking for a campground spot (hopefully near some other memebers) and what else do I need to do? I see tickets listed on thier site, do I need to buy those?

last summer I was paying over $5.00 a gal. right now it's 3.00 a gal.
so I was thinking 3 to 3.25 a gal. so 2.40 is great.
and I was going to buy a 7x14 inclose trailer but we went with a 7x16 so after this trip we can get 4 bike's in it. one of the thing's that made me go 16 foot was it's only $ 200.00 more. and I can haul 4 bike's

Hellion is still down not had time or money to get him together yet the big thing is figuring out what to use to reseal the mother board of the "junction box" with. Plus need to do a valve adjust on both Hellion and Little pixie girl, swap out Slave cyl, and probably needs master cyl rebuilt, Oh and rear tire valve stem wont hold air anymore for who knows why (It was holding air fine till I moved this last time!) I'm a little up in the air for the moment. I'm about 2 weeks away from finding out if I'm still going to be employed or not. Big wigs coming soon to tell us what's going on - layoffs - shutdown, etc. I don't currently have a ZL that I would trust to make the trip either - but I will have that remedied soon. I hope to make it out Saturday at least - hopefully arrive in time for the big ZL tour/parade/ride/whatever it's being called - hahaha. Later.

i think the majority of us will be getting there thurs. (afternoon sometime) last year we all met up at hotel & hung out, before we went riding. if we're lucky enough this year, we will be able to go to the track to set up club space ( on thurs ) ! last year there was a mix up with club space, & thanks to wuputt's efforts we were able to obtain a spot, but we had to wait until fri. morning to set up . That's cool....
Don't wanna show up there and be alone...This year I am not gonna have work to be done on my bike, so I can help someone else possibly and I can help set stuff up or whatever...
I am bringing a canopy tent to add to the ones there in case it's a hot one...I gotta 10x10 one...Also will be bringing some tools, etc in case anyone needs anything...I know you got the trailer and tools Chris but every little bit helps...I can't wait....time away from work I can enjoy..

opp's it's more then that I did something wrong ???? ( about 1,600 mile's I think) but it's all good the wife wants to go and we will be half way there.
We are going to be on the road for about a month camping . so I will have some tools with me and I have a nice gas BBQ. And we will have ICE COLD BEER. I have wanted to make this trip for a few years I have never spent any time on the East Coast, so with our son moving to Haxtun Co. we thought this is the time to do it.
I got are camp site for Thursday -Sunday I want to be there early Thur.
So everyone that will be there please PM me your cell# please ,
And I posted mine but I'll PM it back ,
also when I hit the road I don't know if or when I can get on-line so a call or a text will be the only way for me to get any up date's .

If you people can get a really good quality pic to me of your bike in the next couple of days, I would like to use it for a project I want to do. These pics have to get to me quickly or else I can't get the finished product delivered to Chris in time for the meet. It takes 7-10 days for me to get things to the US so get to work and send me your pics.
If you can get a side shot of your bike with you behind it, that would be the best. Remember to try and get as clear a pic (high resolution) as possible. I'm working in a short time frame so can only allow 3-4 days to wait for the photos as it will take about 3 days to get the project printed and leave enough time for it to get mailed to Chris to bring to the meet.
I ONLY want pics of ZL's, no other bikes. Email the pics to me.
Thanks,

ATTENTION!! ATTENTION!! To any one who is planning on coming to Mid Ohio for the show, I have 3 spots available for hotel rooms. I booked 4 rooms at the Hamton Inn located in Mansfield for the nights of 7/23 thru 7/25, (thursday thru saturday night, check out sunday). Since the booking some of the commitments from others interested in the rooms have changed. I am offering them up to anyone interested. You must contact me via information posted in my profile. I will give those interested untill Monday evening 7/13/09. If no one wants to accept my offer I will cancel the remaining slots. Please do not give me a maybe, or I'll think about it or it's possible. Only true interest. Approximate cost for the 3 nights is around $180 per person, although it could change slightly if I don't have even numbers for the rooms. We'll deal with that if needed.
I have the following for commitments of rooms:
Myself, Furchin

You mention $180 per person...The rooms are double rooms with two beds. Does that mean that these rooms are gonna be $360 each for the 3 nights or does the $180 get split by two guys if we double up...
Just curious...

I have the first shots of the banner but a couple of peoples bike did not make it, those being Markis56 and Rammy1500. Turns out your pictures are too small to expand for the banner being that they are only about 50kb in size. I'm going later today to do the final details on this so if Markus56 and Rammy1500 can get some pics to me before I leave, I'll see about getting them on. Also, if Gremlin is still going, then he can send a pic of his bike also.

I wish I could take off today , I keep going over everything to make sure I have all the stuff I need.
And I know VMD 13 day's away , but this year I really get to go and I'm going krayz waiting .
Our son has a job and his wife got one also and they sound real happy in Haxtun Co. so that make's it a little easier on us. It's hard when your kid move's off to another state. They are young she is 18 and he is 19, it was funny they had to call us to find out where they need to turn at. They got lost and the wife was looking up streets in some little town so they could get back on the Hwy.
So are we going to have a prize for the person who traveled the furthest ? ...LOL...:rotf:
Maybe see who can do the longest rolling burnout ?
We could have or own little drag race out on some back road ?
Just a few thing's to think about after all I never get to ride with a group of ZL's.
Or we could just kick back at the camp site and see who is the fastest BEER drinker .:groupcheers:
I'll buy the frist round as long as it's at the campground.

ATTENTION!!
ZLMark

Jeff....You gave me directions last year...can you refresh those for me?
Also anyone traveling across Illinois....I guess they have photo radar now and they are issuing tickets by mailing them right to your house...I have heard of speeding tickets for 5 mph over the limit and hefty fines...

Ugh, still waiting to see about employment here, not as worried about it now though. I know it's still a ways off but the weather is not looking good. Anything can happen with this midwest weather we have - forecast could completely change tomorrow - keep your fingers crossed. Link below to forecast.

Been changing tires and "zcrubbin" all day gettin ready for VMD '09 :headbang:
I'm taking(riding) the zl1000 again this year as I still don't have a trailer and the zl900 is still in peices. I bought a pair of the Shinko's and I went with the 150/90 on the rear and stock size for the front. That 150/90 is taller than the OEM K425's but not by much. Can't wait to get it out and test ride! I ran out of S100 wheel cleaner so the front tire will be off until the morning, Liberty HD should be open in the morning so as long as the rain holds out I should have a report on the new Shinko's tomorrow
I bought the Motionpro bead popper this thing actually worked really well and as advertised. It's plastic and won't mark up the wheels and makes short work of popping the bead.

Also picked up a set of these rim protectors which worked very well:

Couple things I wanted to plan out ahead of time.
The group photo should take place mid afternoon on Saturday. This has been the busiest time for us over the last few years and will get the most members in the photo. We can use my camera or whoever has a better one. I don't have the capacity to bring a tripod, so if someone does...bring it!
Also the group ride should take place Saturday morning, roll out 6-7am and back to the club space by 9-10am. So if your planning on coming out just for the day try to get here early!
Let me know if you think otherwise.
WillyD
07-20-2009, 08:04 AM
I should be able to bring a tripod....
I may have to pull the carbs off the 1K today or tomorrow...I am gonna check the tank vent but I would bet my problem is dirt in the carbs...I know that crap in the carb feeling....This morning started it up to head to work..Choke on, gas on, fired right up...As soon as I could bring the choke down to approach regular idle, it sounded like a two cylinder...It was like that the first few blocks then it cleared up....seemed to run fine all the way here to work (highway) and when I pulled up out behind the shop it was running a little funky again...dunno...
unfortunately the ZL's are not bikes you can just ride....at least mine...
I absolutely hate talking bikes with a few of my friends....It's hard to defend a harley guy talkin crap about being able to just start his bike and ride and I spend half the time working on mine....He says "I thought it was supposed to be the other way around....ha ha ha ha"
WillyD
07-20-2009, 08:25 AM
Pulled the three tank bolts out and connected a piece of line to the tank vent tube..I was able to blow air just with my mouth with no problem...Then I pulled air in and no problem...I think the vent is fine...
Before I put the pingel on this bike had an in-line filter (see through) that was full of crap. The screen on the factory tap had holes all in it...I cleaned the tank and put the pingel on as well as new fuel line and no filter (the same way my 900 has been running for about a year now)...There must be some junk floating around in the carbs and somehow it is getting in and out of idle ports...Once rolling and in the throttle it runs fine, it is only the idle....and not all the time

Well, so much for that idea. Got up, finished putting things together, left at 3am, headed about a mile down the road and the bulb for the speedo went out, turned around, went home, replaced it with the only used one I had and it worked. So I thought I was good to go now. Headed out, made it to my first gas stop in Ohio, was checking mileage and noticed something on the bike, looked closer and had a coolant leak from the rear coolant pipe on the back of the motor. Didn't look like much so I decided I better head back home before it got worse. About 15 miles down the road, it started lightening real bad - Ok, I'll take the next exit and put on the rain gear - yeah right. It dumped on me before I made it to the next exit - went ahead and took it, put on the rain pants over my soaking wet jeans and then road the rest of the way home in a monsoon with a death grip on the bars - hahaha. Got home about 6am. I'm too ****ed off to jump in the truck and go now. Ugh, maybe next year I'll make it. Later.

That sucks.I went through the same thing a few years ago, trying to get to a car crusie. With 20yr old stuff you just can't predict what will break.I guess thats what makes it fun.If it was easey to keep and maintain antique toys, everybody would do it.
That doesn't mean that you don't get all kinds of pxssed off when they break. It just adds to the fun.:rotf:

i want to thank you all for respecting dad ( marty ) & i by letting me bring this to the club's attention.
there was one very ugly thing that happened while on our group ride this year, & could have been much worse !!!!!, but thank God, & to my ZL-OA brothers for their quick responce, it was more tollerable.
dad & i, knew he was having problems with his front brakes several days before M/O 2009, but i did nothing about it, because dad said, not to worry about it. like a idiot, i listened to him instead of fixing the problem.
i feel extremely ashamed, so, PLEASE NO OPINIONATED COMMENTS, as i feel this whole thing is my fault for not fixing it properly.
i'm posting this as a reminder, to keep up the maintenence on your bikes, no matter how minor it may seem.
while on group ride, we did have a rider go down hard !!!!! it was my dad (marty) thank God, he is still here to ride another day.
while riding back to hotel after our ride, we were rounding a corner. Emmalyn was in front of dad, followed by me, & picking up the rear was zlmark with my wife on the back of his bike, we were coming into corner when dad's front brakes locked up, sending him off the road, & the bike flipping in the air & landing in a ditch.
dad is badley bruised, & cut up, but is okay, his bike did not come out of it too well ! THESE PICS. ARE MEANT TO BE A REMINDER TO ALL OF US ! " MAKE SURE YOU BIKE IS IN TOP NOTCH RIDING CONDITION, BEFORE YOU RIDE IT !!!!!
thank you so much to all the ZL-OA FAMILY who were there to help ! sincerely, CHRIS

I agree with Markus, can't beat a better bunch of guys to hang out with and talk about bikes. Thanks Markus and Paul for giving me the inside scoop on the GPZ750 turbo. Looked pretty on the outside. Also, first time I ever saw two 900's in the swap meet.
Then on my ride into work this morning, I'm exiting off the freeway and a red 900 pulls up ahead of me. Never seen the guy before but maybe I'll catch him at a light again and let him know about this great website.

Several times over the years I have been on Poker Runs, benefit rides and group rides where someone has gone down or two bikes get together, even had a SUV take off a mirror on one guy! I have always done what I could to help but I never cared about any of them like I do about Marty and the members here! It really did shake me up and make me think about how it could have been prevented. I will honor your request Chris and keep my opinions to myself.
I will however say this cuz it is fact, "it will be my honor and pleasure to ride with Marty any day and I look forward to VMD 10 and having him join us in another group ride!"

On a lighter note, thanks for posting the pics - it was great to see. Very nice pic of our fearless leader Mark. I was logging in twice a day every day to see what kind of updates anyone could post over the weekend. I'm really glad the first attendees had such a good time, too.

All I'm seeing is red X instead of pictures, what is up with that? Also, I'm sure you've been questioned enough on the subject, but my son is curious on how fast your dad was going before the spill?

to be honest, we were not going very fast. my digital speedo is not calibrated yet, so i can not give you an exact speed
for now, i'm just glad he's okay. i wont know exactly what happened until i investigate everything

Those photos dont look too bad. Tank, headlamp and a few odds n sods? You know this already but I'll say it anyway, get Marty back in the saddle as soon as he's ready before he gets to thinkin about it too much.
Marty, you are a tough sob. :notworthy: I hate seein your bike messed up like that but at least now you guys have another project to work on together!!!

thanks for your kind words Blag ! i'm sure dad will be happy to read this when he gets home from riding one of his 5 other bikes
the bike is still very repairable & we will do so as time allows us to. the frame is straight, & the forks look straight, but i'm going to put a new set of forks on, just to be safe

Sounds like Marty is bullet proof.
Glad to hear he's ok.
Next year I'm planning on making it a week stay to make it worth the
2,000 mile round trip drive from Fl. to Ohio.

Yea Jeff,,, I hated to say goodbye again too! Who knows maybe I'll get up to MN one of these days :occasion14:
Funny as hell Paul, after riding on the back of your bike that night I dreamed that we did the parade lap riding 2-up and you was really testing the Shinko's at just about parallel with the ground through the curves...LOL....... the goofy stuff we dream about.:laughing7: I can see why the ladies don't like the rear pillion of the zl900 now! Ashley deserves an Iron Butt award for riding with Sean all weekend!
I did get to chat with the VMD event manager (who happens to be a very charming and attractive japanese girl ) She said that we may qualify for the Classic Club area which was for the sand cast CB750's and the CBX's this year. So I'll definetly be in touch with her about that over the next year.
The guys reported 2 black Eliminators in the swap meet for sale. Markus and I ran across a pretty decent 13k mi CBX for $4400. I didn't get to attend the shows I wanted to such as Jerry Palladino's Ride Like a Pro demo but I did demo the Star Raider and the Stratoliner because the V-Max was filled for the day. Let me tell you this, I think Furchins zl600 will give the Raider a good run, but the 900 and 1000 doesn't have anything to worry about :headbang: I really ran the snot out of those bikes!!!
We had "Grilly Willy" on grill duty for most of the weekend and K-Ray, Emmalynn and Chelsea hooked us up with a nice sunday dinner of BBQ ribs potatoes and string beans...Thanks Guys!!!!
There was more beer than even I could drink, and a lot left over for wuputt to get sauced up all the way home since Sean was doin the driving.
I'm already looking forward to the next get together. I'm certainly wanting to do something before the summers end so if you have something in mind speak up!

I cant understand how she could handle that all weekend myself! Did you see how bad his shocks are worn?
Thanks again for everyones help putting the tires on! I am hopeing for some testing in my local roller coaster ride this weekend before making a finnal determination on them but as of now I would have to say a very good buy!
