Petrol Tanks

RJ you may know are the Z/EL 250 petrol tanks the same as the ZL 400/600 version, at any point in the production runs?

The ZL/EL 400 has a pin hole leak and a very poor repair round the petrol tap, so will have to be repaired n' repainted but a spare tank would be useful I suppose. So now off road because of this fault!

I paid top-dollar for this machine and it is the first bike I have bought on-line and not physically viewed. Any site that says, photo's form part of the description , slightly dodgy and being misused by Sellers . It is amazing how creative photography and the camera itself can lie!

I'm really not sure if the EL 250 tank will work on a ZL 400. A few months back I seen ZL 400 tanks on GERMAN E-bay. That sucks that the crook didn't tell you about the leak. When I bought my 1972 Honda CT 70 K1 I drove 200 miles to go see it first.

I would repair it with fiberglass and tank liner if it doesn't show. Welding would ruin the paint.

I don't like tank liners but it's an easy fix. I've repaired a few tanks with both slow curing PC7 and JB Weld then used a couple layers of glass cloth and a good epoxy. My '76 Civic tank was the first I patched using PC7. My F150 was my most recent tank fix with JB Weld and about 5 layers of glass. It was where the strap holds up the tank which is why it rusted thru in the first place. It won't ever rust there again so the fix is better than new. I didn't even remove or drain the tank to flip it so it was a bit more difficult. My '89 Honda Hawk GT which stayed outdoors and rode frequently was the latest model bike I've patched and it was only about 10 years old. I always have glass around but now I have plenty of carbon fiber cloth scraps for small jobs. CF doesn't wear out cutting tools or itch as much. I never had a problem with a liner but some people have. Prep is important no matter what you use.
