Shout-out to Rocky

Hey Rocky...was asked by Peter Hallam to give you a shout...he just sent me a new PIC of his 900....And Michael, he too bought the forward controls from the company you suggested in Germany, Burchard! Thanks gentlemen!
 
Sorry to wake up such an old thread - But is it still possible to get Forward controls for the ZL900? If so, where? I'd love to look into this...

hahah, not so much the look I'm goin' for... More a comfort thing.

I'm 6'2" tall, 260lbs, and I broke my back in a car accident when I was 18 (not my fault)... The more comfy I can make the bike, the longer I can ride. :)

Right now I'm limited to around an hour at a time before my back needs to rest for a while. I'm doing everything I can to be able to ride this thing more!

I was just going to put highway pegs on it, but if forward controls are an option, I'd like to check into it.

I might also think about a driver backrest... but I really am not sure how bad that'll look, or how much of a comfort improvement it'd be. (never ridden a bike with a backrest before :) )

I'd love to someday be able to tollerate a roadtrip on a bike, but thats gunna take a few more mods... Hopefully with this place, and a little time (and money :) ) the mods will happen!

If your doing an hour on an eli your doing good! I have to ride my venture when i do long runs.
 
Forward Controls (for a pain in the back)

We’re drifting off the subject here but since you’ve raised it…

I often do 6.5hr trips (13hr round trip over three days with an extra day in the middle), admittedly that’s with a tailor made 25mm thick sheepskin on the seat.

But the most comfort I get is with my feet back on the pillion pegs. That allows me to lean into the wind and it straightens my back. Have you tried this? I wouldn’t dream of trying to tell you how to best manage your back pain but I would have thought forward control would induce a bent back and therefore more pain. Personally speaking I know the pillion pegs work for me ’cause when the boy’s on the back it isn’t so comfortable.
 
Nope, never tried leaning that far forward. I'll give it a shot next time I'm out riding though and see how it goes though.

Definately going to look into a nice seat cover too... Not sure about sheepskin. I think I'm going to look into beads or one of those "Airhawk" type cushions.

Anyways, sorry to get off topic! Back to reading!

I have framesliders on my ZRX and sometimes
put my feet on them and raise my arms like I have
apehangers to poke fun at the Harley posers and
it always gets me the finger. :lol:
You could try some of those as the ZL front motor mounts
are where they mount and they should work.
They`re only $67 delivered and being black they
blend right in.
Let me know if you`d like some pics and the guys email addy.
 
Yeh, I'd love to hear more details/see pics of that. Sounds like that could be a good alternative!

Okay, I just got this bike and got it running, now I need to perform some service. The question, how do I stand the bike upright like it was on a center stand and be able to do service. I am a welder by trade and am fully capable of building anything. Does anyone have good pic or diagram of something I can build. I would just wing it but I can't seem to find any good lift points to start from. I have thought about lifting with an overhead hoist but that wouldn't be very stable. Anyone? :banghead:

Thats the suggestion from the manual but someone posted a pic recently of a lifter that did the job. I'm sure they'll be along shortly to fill us in.

I bought a motorcycle jack from Sears for 80 bucks it works great, previous to this, I used a piece of 2by4 lumber and held it close to straight up that way, but the jack works awesome, and will lift the ZL's up NO PROBLEM!

Or.... if ya had the time and inclination... you could make one of these...?

If you put in "table lift" into your preferred search engine, you'll surely get some ideas to work from... got this on 4strokes.com, an interesting web site.

Might be as well to check harbour freight or similar first...

Looked at one like that yesterday $400 at Harbor Freight
 
I have hung mine up with ratchet straps to the handlabars, I have jacked it up and put jack stands under the footpegs, next time I will have one of those Sears stands!!

where r u guys jacking the zl from? how do you get past the exhaust? i thought i read somewhere to only hoist lift 'em.
