85 ZL900 choke

My choke does not appear to work. I can crank all day long it seems and it will finally start if I hold the throttle open very slightly with out choke. Once I get it running if I put on the choke it will die. I don't understand how the choke is supposed to work. I have a spare set of carbs and have looked thru the engine side and can see the rod going back and forth. It seems to be connected to the vacume port. I don't understand how it richens the mixture for cold starting. Can someone explain to me please or have an idea.

Most of the members here will be aware that Rossco has had a very serious health issue - from which I hope he is making a full and speedy recovery.
You may not be aware that Wuputt has taken over duties as a moderator on the KERA site. I for one am very grateful that he has, and is willing to spend time clearing the SPAM that is getting on there. This was THE Eliminator forum in its day, and still has a wealth of valuable information on it. It may not be very active at the moment, but I feel it needs saving. So a big thankyou to Wuputt. :groupcheers:
