Hi Everyone,

I went for a ride yesterday to a nearby town and on the way back my Kawasaki ZL1000-A1 motorcycle felt like it was wandering a bit, sorta like a flat rear tyre, so after pulling up and making an inspection, I found my rear wheel bearing, on the right hand side had totally collapsed.

After trailering the bike home and promptly pulling the rear wheel off, I found the bearing cage had totally self-destructed, from what only looks like a total lack of grease.

After looking at the opposite side bearing, which is a genuine kawasaki bearing, it looks like they are totally sealed, and it looks as if you can't re-pack them with grease, is this correct?

I'm familiar with car "timken" type roller bearings and they are re-packable, but it seems these are not.

I'd love to hear if anyone else has noticed this and what you did about it.

Mick.

You are right, sealed bearings are just that, sealed. They come grease packed and sealed to keep the dust and dirt out. They last suprisingly long and are very easy to change. All you need is the numbers that are stamped on the side to replace them. Most industrial suppliers will have them on the shelf. You just want to make sure they get replaced before they do what yours did!

yeah, I should have checked the bearings earlier, wuputt, but I've only done 4000 kms on her since I got her, it must have slipped my mind. Oh well, another lesson has been learned.

I got a pair of new bearings today from my local Kawasaki rep, they actually had them in stock, which amazed me, and at $14.00AUD each, plus the parts bloke also arranged for me to pick up the correct size oil seal from the local machinery & bearing centre for $4.75AUD, so it was $32.75AUD all up, they were aftermarket stuff, but they were probably made by the same companies that make and supply the OEM stuff for Kawasaki anyway.

I thought it was going to cost me a fortune and it probably would have if I got the OEM stuff direct from Kawasaki.

The new bearings I got today are re-packable, they are made by KBC Bearings, and instead of the steel seal, these ones had a hard rubber/nylon type seal, you can pop out (not very easily, but easy enough) and re-pack the ball bearings with HT grease, and it's a good thing I checked them too before putting them in, because on inspection, there was very little grease in them anyway, but I've been told by a few trusted bike mechanics that that is quite normal.

I "drifted" the bearings into the bearing seat myself, easy as, even easier than a car bearing, I reckon

Now all I have to do now is take the girl out for a road test tomorrow to check everything is ok and I'm back on the road, again.

I can't wait, there is a big cold and wet weather front moving in over the next couple of days, so it may be the last opportunity for a ride for a while.

Mick
