Am I gonna need a spacer?

has anyone ever lost a key

i recently lost the one and only key that i have for my 96 zl600. has anyone else ever lost a key and if so, how did you get it replaced. does kawasaki have some sort of system that they will be able to cut me a new key from the factory or am i SOL?

Hello.

If the bike is not locked up, You can remove the ignition switch. On this one some digits are stamped. Now it's easy to order a new key.

I have done it myself.

so i will be able to order a whole new keyset from kawasaki? i hope that is the case, i just got off the phone with a local bike shop and he told me to change out all the locks including the tank and helmet locks would be well over 500 dollars.

Why a complete lock system ????? You only need to order a key acc. to the digits.

well the guy at the kawasaki shop told me that he would need to replace all the locks on the bike. im kinda bike illiterate so i had to take his word on it, that is why i am here posting now, i figured you guys would give me the real scoop
 
Henrik's right, and even if the bikes locked up you can still get to it by removing the headlight assembly. The guy at the dealership just wants to take loadsamoney from you.
You might need some documents to prove ownership of the bike but once you have that, you should be able to get a single key from a Kawasaki dealer (takes a while as I think you have to order them). Then take that one and get some spares cut from an ordinary locksmith............much cheaper.

As a locksmith I can make the key. Take off the ignition if there is numbers send me a PM and I can get the key info if it is the code.

If not take the ignition to a Locksmith they can make a key for under 50 bucks.

Do not go to a Kaw dealer or bike shop, they will charge you to replace the locks or they will have a key made by... a Locksmith then charge you above and beyond that.

I make keys for bikes all the time at Kings Kustom in Cincinnati, they do a lot of repos.
 
Hey everyone, I found my key. It was in my girlfriends purse. I asked her to look there and she said she did, but I guess she didnt look very hard. Thanks for everyones help
 
All my posts have been deleted the last couple of days on the new site so I will repost. Have some Progressive fork springs. Will I need to make a spacer, if so I need to pick up some material to make them. Thanks zl900

I thought they came with a spacer? I haven't gone down this road yet but you can use pvc tubing for your spacers. the length,,i hope someone who knows will chime in. :help:
 
No problem with the posts, it is the natural outcome of growing pains. Heres what I did. The directions were all over the place, but seemed to boil down to 3/4 to 1" of preload. The springs were 2" short of the top of the tube. I used a washer and made a 2inch spacer out of some out steel tubing i had laying around, this brought it up to 1/8 inch out of the hole. Now the cap coupled with the recessed snapring came close to 3/4 " being 1/8 " out of the hole it netted me 7/8 preload. Sound okay?

The directions were vague at best and our bike was listed as a footnote (see calculation directions). These directions were even more vague, after reading them 3 or 4 times I was more confused. So I just went with the preload rule of thumb. (3/4 to 1"). The PS springs were nearly 4 inches shorter than stock but stiffer. With 5 lbs of air I have 1" of sag with me sitting on it. Now with a dirt bike you shoot for 25% sit in. Is a street bike the same? Let me know how I did? Thanks :detective:
 
Sounds right to me, lowlife....And I will be bringing my forks to you this winter....HAHAAAAA, I will be upgrading mine to all Progressive (hopefully) this winter and you may have "volunteered" to do my forks.

Those be the ones freak. I think I got em for 25.00 plus reasonable shipping. Sorry I can't tell you that they suck or didn't fit. Got some low mileage original ones for you though. :-)
I think i must be very close on the preload. Rides much nicer and seems to handle better but it is hard for me to tell since i only have 700 miles on the bike myself.
Hows the flooding down in OK City, I was stationed in lawton for a time.
 
Hmm, the progressive front springs I got for my bike didn't need a spacer, we had enough work trying to compress them so we could lock them in place and put the cap back on.
