1987 ZL1000 Part Question

Just purchased an Eliminator and have a part question. On both the brake and clutch cable there is a metal "slinky-like" coil protecting the rubber cable. It is completely rusted and I was curious if you are still able to buy these.

1. What is the Part #?
2. Where is the best place to buy the part?

Thanks everyone.

Hi and welcome

As far as I know the 'slinky' bit comes as part of the new brake pipes as 1 part. When you consider that the pipes are 20 years old (especially since the metal has rusted through) you would be better replacing the whole lot with braided hoses. I have done on mine and the improvement is immense, particularly the response on the clutch lever.

Don't know if the originals are still available but for what you would pay from a Kawasaki stealer, you would be better off changing to braided.

Hope this helps

Hi TTerman,
I agree with KK - it would seem to be a good idea to replace the original lines with braided ones.
You don't want to have one spring a leak when you most need them !
Enjoy your bike and the Forum here - it has been a little quiet here lately - but that may well change.
Regards,
Vin

Thanks guys for the response. I will probably buy some braided cables soon.

In the mean time I think I will take them off, clean them up, and spray paint them a flat black for a nice clean look.

Loud mouthed lounge lizard? Thats not a nice thing to call the 900!

i'm at a loss for words !!, but since i like the 1k too, i'll forget about one mans opinion about the zl900. we zl900 owners know what our bikes are really made of ! in my opinion, the 9 has a don't f-ck with me look, while the zl1k, has the same power, but in a more comfortable ( sleeper ) look .

so, it's what kind of first impression you want to make ! either way, both the 1k, & the 9, will leave them all in the dust ! CHRIS

Funny, larger carbs but smaller ID on the down tubes. It would increase exhaust velocity, but at the expense of volume. I have ridden both and went head to head against a buddy some 18 years ago. Bikes roughly the same mileage and condition (stock). I probably weighed about 10 lbs more but the 900 was the quicker bike. Not by much, but it was quicker. The 1K started to go flat when the RPM's got near 10K, the 900 didn't go flat until just over 10.5K on the tach. Don't get me wrong, I love the comfort and styling of the 1K and would buy one if given the chance, I'm just disputing the info in the article. I have yet to find a VMax to race against, but the big Magna's are not much of a challenge IMO. I kind of like the reference to a "loud mouth lounge lizard". That's one of the things I like best about the 900, the in your face styling that you rarely see.

Yea thats funny as hell. If they think of a zl900 as a "Loud Mouth Lounge Lizard" I love to hear what they call the HD's

I like the sound of it too. I think I may add that as a rank :rotf:

wuputt says SURE :rotf:

Actually I will scan them and send them to ya. I have the magazines still :D
