Awful quiet here lately.....

Ignition Problems...

Hello all,

I hope some of you can shed some light on my problem.
I have an 85 ZL900 that currently is experiencing some ignition (I think they're ignition) problems. When I go to start the bike, the engine will crank, but it won't kick over.
I unscrewed some of the spark plugs and connected them to the spark plug cables and hit the starter to check for spark...no spark coming from the plugs.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to get my hands on a Service Manual to check the ignition electrics for correct voltages and the like. I would appreciate any input into my problem here. Riding weather is almost here in Toronto, and I have to get this bike on the road.

Does anyone have a diagram they could send/post on the physical locations of the IC Igniter, Junction Box etc? Short of ripping the bike apart, I can't find these components on the bike.

Check your coils. If the wire breaks it does not start. Make sure you have good connections in the coils.

Also check online there is a manual in PDF give me an address and I'll send you a copy
 
You can take you coils off and bring into a shop for them to test to see if that's the problem. But with two coils its rare both of them are bad unless somehow they got fried. Other things to check are the kickstand switch, run button and clutch switch to make sure they are the culprit.

Keep it simple.

If I hear you right,
you say your bike will crank but not start?
Check the kickstand switch and neutral safety switch.
I think?
My bike seems to crank but not run, some of the time, unless
I have the kickstand up.
Its a goofy thing I know. Maybe years of road crap my have contaminated it.
I dunno?
Anyway, when I read your post it kinda reminded me.

I'll definitely have a look at the kickstand and neutral safety switches.

I took the ignition coils off, so I'm going to verify that those are not the problem. What is the likelihood of it being the IC Igniter? It seems to be a solid state device...so I figure not much could go wrong there.

Thank you to those who posted info. I got my bike running over the weekend.
I believe it was a combination of of the spark plug wires and the carbs. I snipped a bit off (~1/4") each of the spark plug wires and squirted some carb cleaner into the carbs via the airbox. That seemed to cure it because it turned over after a couple of cranks.

You're both lucky buggers, so when are you guys going to help me with mine? Aways a place to stay and I have beer. :)

If I were a single guy with no commitments SD.....

Might convince my wife that a family hol in Thailand would be good and if that ever happens, I will look you up, for sure...

But for now, I'll just have to keep driving around on my ZL, enjoying the moderate good weather we're havin here at the moment.

You keep up the good fight with your ZL SD, bit by bit, you'll get there...
