Need some recomendations RE: Muffler 87 Eli 1K

Hey people, I was looking for some input. I'm running the D&D 4X1 system. My problem is that it's so F%^kin loud that it hurts my ear when I get on it. It has a 2" O.D. on the muffler side of the collector, so I need a 2" muffler. I spoke to Goerge over at D&D and the only recomendation he had was to send it back and have it repacked with stell wool instead of the fibreglass. but according to his specs, the reduction after repack would be from 88db at 3500rpm to 84DB with the steel wool. It does not seem like a drastic reduction so I'm considering replacing the muffler with a different brand. Any recomendations?
Thanks and keep it on 2
Ray

Just a quick note to all of you who were nice enough to help me out. (Sarcastic remark) I sent the muffler back to D&D and they repacked it with the new street pack system they developed. The bike sounds great and is much quieter than B4 as well as a slight increase in power. So if any of you were staying away from the D&D systems because of noise, don't worry any more. They have a solution for us. Also, if anyone on the comm. needs a set of them. I'm a registered dealer and can get you the pipes at just above dealer cost.
Feel free to contact me, I am always willing to help out a my brethren.

This forum seems to have died a lot recently. There are quite a few helpfull chaps over at http://www.zl-oa.com/

The forum did die a bit of a death .. it almost became unusable with the hacking and the spam and the broken "search" facility etc.

Once Ethan was able to find the time to get back here and fix things, it was great, (and much appreciated I must say), but ... the "traffic" here just doesn't seem to have picked up again unfortunately.

There is still so much info on this site and it is so good to have the search capability back!!!

I still check in here almost daily, (and over on the other one as well), but yeah .. it's been a bit quiet here for sure.

Ah well, hopefully it'll pick up again ...

I hope so too it would be a shame to lose such a resource

I agree, theres alot to talk about. These machines even though are much newer than my KZ are pretty complex for 1987. So I agree that loosing out on a great site such as this would indeeed suck.

I visit often too. You all know why I started zl-oa. I just hope this site pulls through because if this site had never existed i may have never been a zl owner!

KrayZ1,, I haven't for got about you being a dealer, hoping to hear one and see one installed in person before i buy one

Hello Guys, I have been working on two different 85 ZL900's and have replace the carburators on both.

My question is this, I have taken the Gas Tanks off of both of the bikes, so I am using a portable gas tank hooked to the bikes to test the carbs.
I am getting the same result with both bikes. Either gas flows out of #1 carb, or it flows out of the over flow pipe in between #1 and #2 carbs.

They both seem to run ok but they leak out of #1. Because I am hooking the tank up directly to the carbs would that be the same as prime on the petcock valve? If it is do you think that is why I am getting these results?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Steve :blackeye:

Your float is not floating.

Your float level is wrong.

Your float valve is stuck.

Your float valve is getting dirt in it.

Let us know what the fix is! :good luck:

Answer

Both set of carbs were just rebuilt and all of the float valves were changed.

Both were taked apart again to double check the float adjustment and they were fine.

If you were on prime all the time would this happen?

The float valve should shut off the fuel supply, simple as that.

I will say this. Do not leave the tap on prime

As far as I'm aware, because it's happened to me, leaving the tap on prime can cause the carbs to flood. I kinked the vacuum tube putting the tank back on once, didn't realise until I was riding. Rather than pull over and take the tank off I put it on prime until I got home after meeting my friends.

Parked facing up a hill slightly and went out to a puddle where the carbs had flooded and the petrol had spilled out into the airbox, then onto the floor.

oops

acp,

that has happened to me in the past also. not a pleasent sight !!!! CHRIS

No, not a pretty sight, especially as I'd already let it happen when I parked outside my friends house waiting for him with the engine off. My friends were already moaning about me smelling of petrol, should have seen their faces when they saw the puddle coming out of my bike :)

I was slightly worried though, as it was only about 3 foot away from all of the smokers :pale:

OUCH !!!! THAT COULD HAVE HURT !
flames all over !!! good thing it did'nt ignite. CHRIS

Fuel Leak

It's got to be a sticking or dirty float valve or the O rings on the fuel tubes between carbs. Hooked up to the vacuum petcock on the run position you will still get leaking, though less as the engine is consuming alot of the excess fuel.
Something is not right in your carburetors. While syncing carbs, I have used an external fuel supply with no leakage.
Good luck and let us know what the cure is.
