carb sync

well i dialed in the vacuum on my zl1000 today.
I felt like I had done a good job.
the bike ran well for a time but seems to be stumbling a bit when i wack it hard b/t 80 and 100mph.
i looked into these vacuum lines .petcock to #1, then there is a tee that straddles 2 and 4, then a straight plug on number 3.
is there any way to simplify this stuff?
I am a novice mechanic. what purpose do the lines serve?
is there a specific material to select for a fuel line, to be bought in bulk, or is clear plastic ok?
to me the routing diagrams are a little vague in the manual.
 
You have to use fuel line. 5/16 is the size i have. the clear plastic stuff isn't rated for it. My zl900 has the #3 carb hooked to the fuel tap and then the other emissions is sitting on the shelf. that leaves the #1, 2, and 4 ports capped off.

I believe the #1 and #4 ports serve the air suction valve which adds air to exhaust to reduce emmisions. (correct me if I'm wrong)

If your vacuum hoses are old replace them. Check for leaks by shooting WD40 around the carb boots and vacuum hoses. You'll hear a change in rpm if there is a leak.
