ZL600 Jet Kit and Pods (problems)

Put a K&N jet kit (made by Dynojet) on my little eliminator, the '87 600. It does not run as though it should. The history to date is that I installed the jet kit with a set up for stage 3. Circlip set on #4 with 2 washers on top and 136 main jets as instructions called for. I did not have the pod filters as they were backordered. Decided to run the bike some anyway. It accelerated fine through all gears. Problem was when cruising around 60 or 65 then hitting the throttle the accelleration was not there. It sputtered and spit around. If I down shifted and hit the gas it reacted fine through the rpm's. I figured this problem was because of no filters in place and was not too concerned 'till I got the filters. Well today the filters came and were installed. Now there is no accelleration at all in any gear to amount to anything. If I go slow to get up to speed it's fine. But don't ask to go fast quickly. So I called dynojet, they said to put circlips on groove #3. Did that and still have the same problem. Maybe a little better on the low end. I then figured to experiment by taking the pods off. Well guess what , all accelleration through the gears has returned. Although a little sputter while cruising and then asking for gas. Basically what I ask is does anyone have any theories on why bike runs better with pods off? I hopefully will be able to contact K&N tomorrow, the tech was gone for today when I called. Furchin
 
Sounds like it is too rich, Where do you have the pilot screws set at?(3.5-4 turns out) Did you drill the slides? What did you do with the carb vent hose, is it possibly pinched shut? I have the same setup on my 86 and it works great. Sorry you are having trouble with your bike, it will really run and sound sweet when it is sorted out.

Had the same at first til I got the carbs adjusted. 3 1/2 turns out and play a little with fine tuning them.

Also depends on the pod filters used.

Ran fine at first put on UNI's and had to readjust the screws.

Sounds great and accels quick

I had a very similar problem when I jetted mine (stage 1) this past week. The day I did the jet, it ran great. After letting the bike sit overnight, I started it up, and I could get anything but gurgles off the line till I hit 4000 rpm. After shutting it off, I tilted the bike and gas ran out of the surge box. I tried to adjust the idle mixture, thinking it was way too rich, but i couldn't get consistant settings.

Finally, I decided to remove the carbs again and check them out. I completely disassembled the carbs and found that some of the aluminum shavings from drilling out the slides or plugs were still leftover, even though I thought I thoroughly cleaned them. I did another thorough clean, we'll see if this makes a difference. I figure in the mean time i'll pop in a stage 3 as well.

I would suggest tearing down the carbs completely and cleaning each individual piece thoroughly if you can't get the idle mixture set. My pods should arrive Friday, I'll let you know how it turns out.
 
got it, finally

finally got the bike running today the way it should be. after talking to K&N and a fellow worker we figured that the bike was running rich, Bottom line is that I put the 106 jets in in place of the 136's and reinstalled the K&N pods. Runs like a felon running from the law. Politically correct you know. Any way the bike pulls in every gear. Thanks to all who responded. FURCHIN
 
K & N tech recommended a drop from 136's to 106's?
Thats quite a drop in jetting.........
I'm running 134's in my 96 with K & N pods and Cobra slip-ons........
I've kinda considered dropping to 130's but have not changed(yet).

Anyway, glad you got things sorted out!

I would not say that K&N recommended the drop in jet size, but after deducing all systems that is what was decided to try. There was the smell of gas while running, the plugs were all black and sooty and no accelleration. Remmember that the settings in the directions are just their recommendations and adjustments may have to be made. Also when running the 136's my gas milage had dropped to 34 1/2 mpg. Way too low, seeing how I was getting around 44mpg's before. Now with the smaller jets my mpg has increased to 40. This is more like it. I would expect somewhere in the neighborhood of a 4 mpg loss with a jet kit.

I know that feeling... I guess thats something else we all have in common then... we aint no harley drivin doctors n lawyers wit tons of spare money... were just normal guys...

Any ideas when the bulldog is on MH? I hear it was brill last year... a bunch of biker.ie lads headed over and had a blast..

Well a year to count pennies. guys. trust me Bull is a bit rough around the edges but he is fist class, free lodging? in a place a b-b can cost over 150 a day!, and yes he has a hot-tub! ~he hasnt said I gould bring over any of my fat girls yet however~.... take some time put some thought into it. the US guys. damn gas will be a bit cheeper by then...... the guy is for real if he offers his home and his bike he aint kidding.. hell if ya gotta show up bike less I will offer mine as well. you guys ride I will sip cocktails and cook wile ya all ride.

I've also just read about a Brothers of the Third Wheel club over your side of the pond. They're holding their first rally this year 8th-10th June at the Slieve Croob Inn, Castlewellan, County Down. It's mainly trikes but they welcome anyone along as long as you're on a bike or trike, no cars allowed.

Anyone in the UK going to the You've been Nabbed rally or the Farmyard party this year? You've been Nabbed is 11th-13th May and Farmyard is 15-17th June. I'm most likely going to the Farmyard party, and thinking about NABD rally if I can make it.

For those of you that don't know, NABD is National Association for Bikers with a Disability. They are a charity that help out disabled bikers by giving them grants to get a bike converted so they can still ride. When I had my crash I thought I was going to have to apply to them.
 
As much as I would love to go over to the US and meet some of you guys, I can't afford to as I'm trying to clear my debts as well as save up for a deposit for my first house. And I'm still looking at moving to Australia as well, so I'm having to really keep an eye on my money.
