chrome horn covers zl1000. Available?

Generator sprocket/gear

I had the generator sprocket/gear on my 1987 ZL1000 lose some teeth causing a horrible (loud) sound from the crankcase. In reading some posts, I figured it might be the generator chain tensioner so I removed the right engine cover (clutch side) in order to investigate and sure enough it was the gear (minus 3 teeth). I was just wondering if anyone has ever encountered this problem, especially since my ZL only has 11,000 miles on it. :roll:
 
Yeah but it sounds like you were lucky, cos when mine went it threw the chain through the side casing!!! :( I think maybe around the same sort of mileage too.

Funny thing was (not that any part of it was funny) the stealer (sorry, I meant dealer) said he thought that these were strange parts to replace as they never break (yeah right) and they had to order parts in specially.
Since then I've heard of 2 others with equally 'unbreakable' parts.

I never did find out what actually caused it, but I suspect that the chain may have been made out of swiss cheese and just got too long for the adjuster to cope with. Obviously, with the whole area shattered into a thousand pieces, I was never able to say for sure.

New sprockets
New chain
New adjuster
New engine casing

Good thing is, my 1000 now has 68000 on the clock and no further problems in that area (Yep I've gone and said it now, it'll probably break next week :lol: )

Thanks kawasaki-krazy...at least I don't feel all alone. I did order new sprockets and a new chain, but no tensioner. It sounds as if though your mishap was rather costly and I do indeed feel lucky. Thank you for the reply.
 
WhenI first picked mine up from the wreckers it had the tail busted off the starter chain tensioner lock-out pin. This resulted in the remainder of the tail floating free and striking the clutch nest causing all manner of grief. Dropped the sump, found the missing 10mm of pin, replaced the sump, the tensioner and chain and the problem was solved.

Fortunately I had no busted teeth or holed cases.

Kawasaki - Candy Lime Green

Yep, I like it too.

It’s not a ZL colour but it is a Kawasaki Candy Lime Green. It’s used on the ZRX and more recently on the VN1600 MeanStreak (in Oz anyway).

The supplier of my paint was PPG and it’s a DELTRON® Global Refinish System (http://www.ppg.com/aus-refinish/collisionrepair/cr_page1.htm). The code is KAW8.n (or KAW.8n; I don’t recall which). Our dealers are extremely reticent to divulge the OEM brand and codes (KHI’s paint codes and supplier) but I managed to get it from a few different bike repairers.

The Cosmic Galaxy Blue on the shop bike is rather nice also. Although this was a standard colour for Oz ZL1K’s I don’t believe it was available o/seas.
 
Original for the US Spec Bikes was BLACK and Burgonday 8O , Mine was Originaly the Burgonday Color but I changed it to Black, Did'nt Know there were any More Colors??? Good to Know, Later Rocky :twisted:
 
They were only available from KHI and they come wif da noise generator (free), bloody expensive though. Keep an eye on eBay.

To everyone else wif both of their horns intact, I recommend you replace the old and brittle epoxy that the OEM used to hold the covers on with something a little more reliable (and flexible to accommodate the vibes).
 
I wish I still had the original horns!
 
Got both my OEM chrome horn covers and original horns still on my bike, thank goodness, I reckon they are one of the things make the bike look as good as it does, plus they are as rare as hens teeth to get your hands on, even second-hand. You could try your luck with eBay, but I wouldn't hold your breath for too long waiting for them to show up.

The original OEM horns sound heaps better than the ones they have around now, nice and low even dare I say it, car sounding??? not tinny.

I remember you telling me about the epoxy, when you were up this way last, rocket, I soon after re-did them and good thing I did, as the epoxy was in pretty bad shape.

I THINK I HAVE 1 ONLY FROM BOTH MY BIKES ANYONE WANT IT DIB IN FIRST UK IS EASIER FOR POSTAGE WILL DOUBLE CHECK I HAVE IT NEXT TIME I`M IN THE GARAGE.. ANDY
 
I just noticed over the weekend that my right side horn isn't working. Guess that will give me an excuse to spend time in the garage, drinking beer, trying to figure out why it quit.

Rammy, there is an adjusting screw on the back side of the horn. sometimes just tweaking it around a bit will bring it back to life. you can also loosen the bracket bolt and adjust there as well. hope this helps
