Clutch friction plate replacement

#1 spark plug is covered with oil

I punched it off with a bandit 1200 the other day and lost by 2 bike lengths. I have K&N pods and Supertrapp exhaust so I figured I should have won. Upon checking my plugs I found that #1 plug had oil all over it from the electrode to almost the top. I couldn't see where it came from so I put in a new plug and rode for 5 minutes. I checked and this time the electrode was clean but the threads were covered. Any ideas? My Kaw mechanic was clueless. Please help as the guy with the bandit is feeling too good about himself. Let me know if you figure it out because my #3 plug does the same. I just figure its the little o-ring on the valve cover not sealing.
 
My guess would be the oring you refered to Rammy. You could verify this by checking the compression. If all cylinders are equal or very close to it, the motor is probably okay.
Bridgestone, if your mechanic couldn't figure that one out, you may want to find another one. :?
 
oil in cylinder

Gasket number for o-ring's is as follows: 11009-1377. There are 4 o-rings. These are notorious for leaking oil into the plug ports. Have replaced them on my 900 when I owned it. I highly recomend buying new ones. Furchin

I had the same problem years ago. Oil in the spark plug cavities - new o-rings and a valve cover gasket and it hasn't had a leak yet - knock on wood.
 
Looking at a blowup, I believe you guys are correct. I'll be pulling off the valve cover soon. Thanks for your help. Dan
 
When putting in new friction plates the shop manual tells you to put in new steel plates of various thicknesses. Then, after pulling out the clutch hub and installing it on a "spare" driveshaft, you are to do a "sprinig plate free play measurement" using a dial indicator gauge.
Is there an easier way to do this, in the bike. I want to replace the steel plates also, so what thicknesses?
On dirt bikes, it was simply replace all the plates (friction, and steel), and away you go.

When I replaced mine I just bought the full set of steel and friction plates, put em in and rock n roll!
 
Spring plate free play measurement not necessary then? Why different part numbers for different thicknesses of steel clutch plates?

Not sure bro, just know I bought a set and put em in and it hooks up like a beast!
