Fuse keeps blowing?

When I got my bike the light bulb in the speedo, and license plate were burnt out.

I finally got around to replacing the bulbs (with used but good bulbs I had layin' around)... Replaced the fuse, and walaa, the lights worked.

Went for a ride today started getting dark on the ride home and I noticed the speedo/tach/license plate and tail light were out (brake light still came on though) ...

Got home, pulled the fuse, sure enough, its blown.. replaced it with a 15 amp fuse (only thing I had laying around), turned the bike on again and the fuse immediately blew.

I'm sure I'm going to be tracking down some kind of short, but I figured I'd ask if anyone had an idea where to start?

Last night all the lights worked fine.... However I never actually started the bike, just tapped the start button to get the lights to come on.

Ideas apprecaited!

check the bulb sockets for corrosion. it may be falling apart inside of the socket.

chack the loom that runs them ,prob'rubbing or touching on frame somewhere.....

Anyone happen to have a clear scan of the electrical diagram for a 85 ZL900? ... Theres one in my supplemental manual PDF but the scan is almost impossible to read (the text on the diagram is very small and the quality is low) ....

Thanks!

There used to be a link to one in the old site here .. in the "Garage" section, which is now defunct.

Unfortunately the "search" function isn't working here either so makes it a bit hard to find stuff.

However, .. I had a bit of time up my sleeve and was sure I'd seen other links for the diagram here ... so I started at "Page 20" of this site and worked backwards!!

So ... here ya go ...

have a look at the third post from "Harriminator" on this page .. http://www.eliminator-us.org/kforums/viewtopic.php?t=447 .. that link works .. I just tried it

Awesome, thanks for the link! WAY better than the one I have :)

I sure am glad I found this place, it's made owning this ZL900 WAY more enjoyable. (Not to mention saved me alot of money along the way :) ) ...

Anyways, it's past my bedtime... Thanks again!

Me thinks it sounds like when you go riding you MAY be playing catch up behind your dad

:nonono: NAHH !
dad knows i have the faster bike. he wont play to hard, " i'll smoke him !!! lol ! usually, we cruise at a decent speed together, but there are occassions in the past where we'd race ! we'll see what the future holds !

Always remember " Old age and treachery will overcome youth and skill"

Chris, just let him beat you till he wants to put up some cash!

I always remember riding on the motorway with my Dad when he decided to try and have a little race with me.

Yamaha XV535 Virago vs Kawasaki ZX-6R 636cc Ninja.....

Hmm, wonder who won without even having to shift down :)
