Fork oil change

For anyone who has changed their own fork oil, what type of oil did you use? The manual for my 600 say 10w-20, but the autoparts store doesn't sell that weight. My friend has an '83 nighthawk and his service manual says to use automatic transmission fluid.
 
Get it from a BIKE shop.

2 wheels don't go into a four wheel store :lol:

Honda, Suzuki any bike place should carry the right viscosity
 
Finished a little early today and took the long way home from work, up over a small mountain range through a pass called "the Vee".
While passing over the crest of the hill I noticed my right leg was a bit damp... pulled in and stopped to a cloud of steam and brownish/green water pissing out from the front end.. bollocks, 30 miles from home. I was able to remove the fuel tank on the side of the road and refill the radiator with bottled water i had in my backpack. Started the bike but the water started pissin out again from the top of the radiator.
luckily I was at the top of a very long downhill run so I freewheeled about 10 miles with quite a bit of pushing in between (you all know how hard these yokes are to push). Got to a town at the bottom of the valley and was able to call my wife to come get me. (forgot my cell phone today,,,typical)
Went home for the car n trailer and went back to recover the bike.

The bike is now in my shop, I have it stripped down with the radiator off and the plastic trim removed. All along the TOP of the rad theres dimples almost like corrosion pushed them out from the inside. One of these dimples let go and theres a hole about 3mm diameter there. So thats the rad, needs to be welded...

I decided to flush out the engine with running tap water to get the brown sludge outta there.. I stuck the garden hose on to the top rubber pipe on the bike but no water came through. I tried the same with the bottom rubber pipe with same result.
Tried the garden hose on the top pipe with the engine running and there was a little water flowing out from the bottom pipe but not as much as i expected. Should there be a torrent of water running out with the engine running? Just wondering do I have water pump problems?

Any suggestions?

Sure am glad I wasnt 100 miles from home or more......

After you get the radiator back. fill it up with super flush to get the crud out. Then flush several times until clear. When use of straight water in a cooling system is required you'll have to be sure to get the correct level of freeze protection. I do it by adding straight anti-freeze 50% or more of the cooling system capacity.

As far as your blockage I wish I could answer that. I just did my water pump last fall and don't remember having problems flushing. I may have just flushed with the system all together several times.

Anyone know the flow direction of the radiator? in at the top and out at the bottom... or vice versa...?

Yep. (The same amount as you put in!)
There should be NO restrictions to the flow from a garden hose. The only restriction there could possibly be is the thermostat but when this is closed there should be a circulation round the engine. The thermostat opens when the engine gets hot to allow the water to flow through the radiator, but since you're putting cold water through it and you've got the radiator removed anyway...........

It's possible. This is the BIG problem with these bikes NOT having a temperature gauge. You would have seen the problem developing if there was a gauge fitted. (Note to self....Get a gauge fitted)
Maybe if the water pump is weak, it could have led to the build up of pressure that blew your dimples out!!!
Were you putting water through the engine in the right direction? If the water was fighting in the wrong direction against the pump, that could account for the trickle.

I have flushed my cooling system many times. Yes, when pouring water from the top spigot, water should flow/drain out fast through exit hole.

Also, I only use Honda coolent as it is already premixed. It has a protecter in it to minimize the white and brown crud that builds inside the radiator.

Thanks Mark, I'll keep that in mind. I have a friend that welds n repairs car n truck radiators so I'll give him a look at it first and see what he thinks.. If its repairable or a trash case... Apart from the top bit, the rest looks in good shape. I spose to patch it and pressure test it would be the norm...

I am glad it blew so close to home, I could have been anywhere on the ZL this coming weekend... luck of the irish again...

I'm a bit worried about the flow in the circ system. must have a better look at it tomorrow see what is restricting the flow... No harm to pull the water pump and have a look too as I'm at it...

I think you're right KK, with the engine running the flow was poor, and when i gave it a bit of a rev, the flow got less... I had the garden hose in the top rubber pipe above the engine, I should have had it in the bottom pipe between the down pipes by what you're saying...

I'll try it again tomorrow...

Bad luck with the radiator Blag. Hope your friend can fix it so you don't have to shell out too much to get it back on the road. Have you taxed it yet? :)

Pretty bummed about the radiator but i'll soon have her sorted... Hated driving to work this morning in the car... blue sky, sun beating down...
 
I bet, the only downside of me not having my car licence yet is that if I need to take mine off the road for any length of time I have to use my dad's Shadow :pale:
 
Hi Blagadán,

...Just a handy tip, if you get a pinhole sized leak anywhere in the cooling system, tip a teaspoon of fine ground white or black pepper in the filler neck and add any extra water you may need, it will block the hole long enough for you to get home and fix it, and it readily comes out with a back flush of the cooling system. I usually have a sealed bag of it in my kit when I go out, just incase, and it has worked everytime for me. Loose tea leaves works for larger holes, but it is harder to get out later.

Sorry to hear about the radiator, but those holes should be easy to fix, they'd just need a bit of brass brazing rod, I'd also suggest while your mate has the brazing gear handy, that you or him push on the other dimples while you are there, just to make sure they don't let go in the future, or either that, do a pressure test on the radiator to bring out any more potential holes.

A good radiator specialist should know how and what to do to do a pressure test.

If you wish to back flush the motor to flush out any junk, I'd suggest you pop out the thermostat first, as the closed cool/cold thermostat will block the flow, before placing your garden hose into a top radiator hose the flow should be the same as the amount going in, a strong gush of water. the same applies to a radiator back flush.

And to check the thermostat, place the thermostat on something to stop it from touching the base of the saucepan and fill the saucepan with cold water until it's level with the blocking plate and place the saucepan on a stove element to heat the water to boiling point, just as the water reaches boiling point, the centre of the thermostat should open, if it does, it's working properly, if not it's stuffed and it will need replacing. The normal opening temp of a working thermostat should be 80c - 84c (176F - 183F), if you find this is too high (which is usually the case in Australia, especially in summer), lower opening thermostats are very readily available.

If you ever replace the thermostat, I'd advise you to drill a small hole, approx. 3mm, in the blocking plate, close to the centre opening, as this will allow the coolant to still flow a tiny bit, but it allows the pressure and temperture to equalise quicker between the colder radiator coolant and hotter internal parts of the engine on very cold mornings, but primarily, it's designed, just incase of the unlikely event, that the thermostat decides to seize or fail, it will take a bit longer for the coolant to overheat due to a blocked or seized thermostat.

Also check that the gaps are clear of obstuctions (i.e dirt, etc) between the fins in the radiator, especially on the bottom, I found that the lower half of my radiator, was full of hardened, road grime when I bought her and it took me nearly 8 hours to clear them individually with a cut-down hacksaw blade.

I conjunction with the anti-freeze / anti-boil / glycol based, coolant, (the good book says 43% concentrated coolant, not pre-mixed and it must be aluminimum alloy friendly, as not all of them are) I'd also put in about 100ml of water soluble oil, as this will help lubricate the water pump shaft bronze bearing and help to inhibit corrosion with the aluminium/magnesium alloy used in the engine, etc.

I know this also may sound strange, but also use demineralised water when you refill the radiator with coolant concentrate, as chlorine, alum and most airbourne pollutants (dissolved sulphur dioxide, etc) that are dissolved in tap water will react with the magnesium in the alloy, therefore enhancing the electrolysis / corrosion effect and increasing the amount of rubbish floating around potentially blocking water galley's, thermostats and other things within the internal cooling system of the engine and radiator.

I use to have cooling issues with my coolant temp sensor not cutting in the thermofan until it was too late and it would vent coolant on to the deck, so I bridged the temp sensor relay with an aftermarket engine run/kill switch, between the common power in and the relay switching power out, to manually switch on the thermofan, especially if I was idling through slow traffic, and cool down the coolant before it overheated. If you can feel with your legs the motor is getting a bit too warm and there isn't enough airflow through the radiator, you just pop the thermofan on, at your discretion and the problem is solved, simply.

BTW, in Australia, they have just started making radiator caps (0.9 sized to fit the ZL) with a built-in temp gauge, which would solve the problem of no temp gauge, the only problem is, where the radiator cap goes on a ZL, you can't see the top of the cap as you are riding, I'd love to get one, but I just won't be able to see it, as the petrol/gas tank is in the way, so it's pointless getting one, but it may work on other bikes that don't have a temp gauge.

Some handy tips there. thanks for info re the flow direction and removing the thermostat before flushing (good tip), that could explain my flow restriction when trying to flush the engine...

The hole I had was about 3mm and was a gusher. If I had some chewing gum and a match stick, I could have done a McGyver on it but as I was relatively close to home, I was lucky...

I'll bet its a bunch more akward over where you are when you have a problem like this...

The problem is still the same here, it just happens a hell of a lot quicker, especially on a very hot day (over 100c).

Overheating is the single most common thing that happens to all vehicles in Australia, so as you'd imagine, there is many temporary commercial and common knowledge solutions to holes in radiators. I've even heard that you pour a whole beaten egg into the radiator and top up with water, it will find and block the hole, temporarily, I've seen it done and it does actually work, but it's a pain to clean it out afterwards.

I used to have the same problem and rewired allsorts to try and cure it but another ZL owner (I apologise for not remembering who) over at KERA told me to swap the radiator cap (20 years old now you know) and hey presto problem solved.

Yep one of those things that gets overlooked - same problem here a long time ago - overheating. Did all sorts of crap to try and cure the problem then Harri (Harriminator) mentioned I should try replacing the cap - Tada!!!!! Cheap easy fix - after all the expense and frustration of trying nearly everything else of course - hahahaha. Later.
 
All great tips guys, and thanks for them. Here's another, Most all radiator caps will turn about a quarter turn to release the pressure, and then another quarter turn to remove. If you have a small hole near the top and no egg, pepper or whatever, turn the cap to the first deten to relieve the pressure and leave it there. You can then ride a very short distance without pressurizing the system and spraying coolant everywhere. The motor will still run hot, but running a mile or two and waiting ten minutes to go again is better than walking. Of course you will have to top off with water.
