Top end noise

My Zl1000 has developed a anoying tap inceasing when hot. I have checked valve clearances, cam chain tention & guides and all are ok there is some wear and pitting on end of some cam lobes but I'm not sure if these would make a noise. Any ideas or stabs in the dark even would be appreciated

I moved my (ratchet type)cam chain adjuster in by hand 1 notch,cured my noise.

Hey Kiwi, Could be the Starter Clutch, Valves and Camchain Will Rattle When Cold, Then Quit when the Engine Warms up. Starter Clutch has a Chain and Tensioner, Possibly a Bad Tensioner, Just a SHOT IN THE DARK, Later Rocky O' :twisted:
 
ANY IDEA ANYONE WHERE I CAN LAY MY HANDS ON EITHER A STAINLESS SET OF DOWN PIPES OR A SET OF COVERS FOR MY 900.THE OTHER ALTERNATIVE IS THE BLACK TAPE I`VE SEEN USED ON BIKER BUILD OFF .CAN WE GET IT OVER HERE????? THANKS ANDY :detective:
 
The black tape is exhaust wrap, I duun if it is available overseas, but it is here, its fairly cheap and does a good job of preventing leg burns, anyways, what covers are you looking for, because you may not need them unless you are worried about the looks....

I`M TRYING TO HIDE THE FACT THAT MY NO.1 &NO.4 DOWN PIPES LOOK LIKE S**T.I`M MAKING UP STAINLESS LINK PIPES TO MY CANS(X4) BUT THE DOWN PIPES WILL SPOIL THE LOOK. ANY TIPS APPRECIATED THANKS ANDY :detective:
 
Wrap 'em up.....Its prolly the cheapest way to do it, I think enough tape to do it should cost less than $50.00 (American), hope this helps...Otherwise, high temp paint (1200 degrees) would do the trick as well!

The D n D system is great have one on my bike thinkin of wrappin the head pipes as well. The wrap also help keep the heat in the pipes which increases exhaust scavenging so I guess it makes a lil more horse power. Perhaps i am wrong but i think i herd this info somewhere elce.

FYI: about that exhaust wrp, it is called "listing tape" in the insulation realms, it can be purchased in various widths and thicknessall 1/2 all the way to one foot wide, from paper thin to 1/4" inch thick, I have seen 1/2" thick but only for vary large marine apps It can be found at any insulation supply house/company..>west coast Paragon Pacific, EJ Bartells

Tip2:when wrapping your pipes/headers put the tape/wrap in a bucket of water wrap it "wet" it will steam when it dries if you dont dry it prior to starting your bike but when its wet you can get a tighter wrap. Use Stainless zip ties or small thin stainless clamps. Make sure you have some very sharp scissors on hand, It is a fiberglass with some silk fibers in it. bennifits of a wrapped pipe is heat your bike will warm up quicker and on many twins/and aircooled machines there is a horsepower gain not much mind you but enough. it will also change the tone of the machine as it will dissapate the higher frequencies that bare metal has.
Other than I think the stuff is ugly it is something that true hot-rodders will reccomend
 
I would concider the wrap and spare the expence of the stainless. the wrap if done correctly and taking your time does look ok, it just isnt "pretty"
 
I think it has a cool race bike or hot rod look, just my opinion, I am considering the pipe wrap for my 900 as well for the down pipes and back to my mufflers....look up some choppers from Choppers Inc. or West Coast Choppers and you will see some with wrapped exhaust, maybe you will like the look, I do.
