First let me say that I am not new to ZL's. I bought an 85 900 in 1987 and rode for 2 years until I was force to part with it due to being young and out of money and have regretted it since. I recently bought another 85 900 and am in the process of rebuilding and repairing. It's in generally OK shape, mostly minor cosmetic issues. One issue that I do have is that it is hard to start and will stumble and die unless I just leave it alone for the first couple of minutes. Pulling the choke on seems to have little effect. I pulled the head cover off last week to adjust and inspect the valves. I found some vac hoses loose (between carbs 1&2 and 3&4) and a torn reed gasket between cylinders 3 & 4. Also cyl 3 running really rich, others look good. Once it gets warmed up it runs OK, but could probably be better. I figure I am going to have to pull the carbs out and have a look, but I am a little inexperienced at motorcycle carbs. I have been twisting wrenches on autos and aircraft for the best part of 20 years so I am fairly mechanically inclined. What are some probable causes or what should I look for? Also if I were to swap in another set of carbs, what makes good donors? Is it as simple as finding another set of similar sized carbs, or is there more to it? Sorry for dragging on. Any links to reading material or articles would be appreciated.

Seems to be a problem with these older carbs.

On my 86 ZL600 they ran gas. Got some new float valves on EBAY 4 for 20 bucks. From New Zealand.

That and slightly adjusting the float arm that moves the float valves, VERY easy or ya break them.

Got a guy doing an 85 ZX600 Ninja had the same problem with the carbs.

I jetted mine made sure the Vaccum seal was well seated push it up in the back and make sure each carb has resistance.

The vac lines should be as follows: Carbs 1 and 4 direct carbs 2 and 3 together and T'd off to the petcock use carb cleaner liberally. Really clean them, check the tank for rust and sediment. Check the petcock screen filter for gunk.

I just cleaned my tank and installed an inline fuel filter just to be safe for now.

Just ran her today had to use 3/8 fuel hose to avoid pinches. She screamed and no leaks.

Any problems I hear with any old bike the carbs leak and most like with the Ninja above same carbs as mine, they really need to be cleaned. lines run correctly and fuel air mix set correctly.

There are usually carbs on Ebay most start around 50 bucks for the rack but then you get the same problems. If they looked evenly worn and you still get vaccum then clean clean clean.

Do not pinch the vaccum seal and make sure the float bowl seal is in good shape and the jet is tight.

The Carbs are a REAL PAIN to Remove with the Stock Airbox on, But with some Patients You can get them Off[ A Lot of Beer also Helps] Actualy Geting them off is A lot Easier than geting them Back on, The Rubber Intake Boots are a *****. I opted for a Stage 3 Kit for my 1000 and Can Now get the things off in about 15 Minutes. Sounds like the Previous Owner may have left some old Gas in the Bowls, this has a Tendancy to turn to Varnish after a Few Months.I'd start at the Tank and Make Sure all the Vacume Lines are in good Shape, You may have some Dryrot Cracks in them. They have Been Rebuild Kits on Ebay Recently, Hope this Helps, Later Rocky  PS Post your Location, Mabey theres Someone Close that can Help

I have been checking the lines and have found some questionable connections. Right now I am just waiting for some gaskets before I can fire it back up and see if it made a difference. It seems odd that it's just a problem on #3, that and I need to get the choke working. One thing at a time I guess. As for location, I am around the Seattle area.

While you've got the carbs off, remove the two screws on each of the fuel enricher diaphragms (No 1 & 3 carbs). You can't get to No 3 with the carbs fitted. Both of mine were perforated and cost AUD$44.60ea.

I am delighted to say that thanks to the forum, one of our guys has bought himself a ZL 1K fron Ebay at what I consider to be a steal !! :dancingfool:
Whats even better is that because of this forum I did not bid against him and bump up the price. :D :D
I am sure he will be posting to let us know of his victory. :cool10:
