Winterize!!!! Maybe not

Last Sunday I took my bike down in the basement to put her up for the winter. I took the gas tank off and drained it, and then I just kept going. Well its thanksgiving and the frame is now empty. I have a pretty good idea what I would like to do, I want this to be one bad ass bike when I am done. I am looking for some advice from the experts if you will. I am going to redo the cam chain and pistons, does it make any sense to bore it over any or does it not gain you that much? Should I go to a four into one header or just a better 4 into 2 exhaust. I am planning to run k&n filters and do away with the airbox? I know I am going to increase the tire size on the rear, I saw the thread on how to go about that! Can anyone tell me if I can lower the rear end any! When I pulled the rear shocks out and the bike came down I really liked how it looked! The last question is where is the best place to get all the parts I am going to need? I am going to go away from the original black color and paint it very similar to the Triumph rocket tribal edition. One other question, I saw a blue eliminator (Custom) It had a see through window on the crank case anyone know where to get this or did the guy custom build that part as well? I would like any advice I can get my hands on! I have never dug into anything like this before and at this point it is down to nuts and bolts and I can go any direction. As well I made need some help from time to time from you guys, I have become a little scared that I may never get this thing back together again! I will update and post pictures as I go along.

Wow, where to start:

First off there is no replacement for Displacement! If you want more power, make the engine bigger. As far as exhaust goes, I'd stick with the Holeshot slip-ons in stock configuration as the only 4-1 is the D&D and in my opinion hangs too low... especially if you want to lower the bike.

To lower the bike, you will need to buy some shorter shocks, like the Progressive units, and make sure you lower the front end to match which also can be done with new fork springs.

As far as the clear clutch cover mod. This is something you would have to do yourself, there is no place to run out and buy one. I am working on it myself. You can check out the preliminary pic here: http://www.eliminator-us.org/module...ile=displayimage&album=lastup&cat=10002&pos=0

You have to remove the clutch cover and the components behind the cover (braces etc). Cut out a hole, then mount a piece of plexiglass in it's place. I'm still researching exactly what type of plexi to put in there as you need one that is tolerant to heat as Sibererian (www.sharkystuff.com) found out that the wrong stuff will warp under heat load and cause leaks.

Elimiboss,

Thanks for the info, like I said any info helps, if you were going to bore out a 900 how much should I take out? Is the zl 1000 the same motor just bored out bigger than the 900? I do not plan to do the engine work myself, it will never run again......

I got the frame stripped and primed today. I can't hardly stand it, I wan it done now.

Thanks for the info!!

George

Well I can Put a Little Info in on the Lowering Part, Progressive makes Shocks in 1" Increments, I have 11.5" on my 1000 Also Progressive Springs in the Forks, Its a 2" Drop from Stock. One thing to Remember is its Fine For Solo Riding, But Loosing 2" when 2 up Would BITE 8O 8O . The Clear Clutch Cover is Easy, Like Ethan said you need the Right Gasket and Plexi, The Aluminum Disc in the Middle is Bolted on from the Back Side[ Dont forget a New Gasket if you Do this]You can still get the Supertrapp Mufflers, If you can get Someone to Weld them up For you, Probaly any Decent Machine Shop, As for the Big Bore Wiseco makes the Pistons, Dont know anything about Them But It BUMPS Displacement to 997cc :D :D If you want a Bigger Pic of the Shock Drop I can Email you Some Full Screen Shots, Later Rocky

Elimiboss, I would suggest using Lexan instead of plexiglass because it is virtually unbreakable. I don't know about colors if you want to match it up to anything. Lexan is breakable if you want to bend it around a corner but for this application I would think it would be fine. Good Luck, Furchin

I've managed to perform a miracle. I somehow got 46 miles to the gallon on my ZL900. :cool10:

It's mostly due to the fact that my speedo cable was snapped, so I was keeping it to 5,000rpm in 6th gear, about 70mph or so.

That is mighty impressive! I wish that mine would do that!

I cant even come up with that on my 750! Someone must be slipping in fuel when you're not looking....lol

That is very good though, It would be interesting to find peoples average, see what they're gettin to say, to a full tank...

Mine, with a fully loaded tank, average driving, I get about 120kms before she goes into reserve. I'd expect another 30-40 kms before I start pushing...

The most I've had was 93.4 miles to the entire tank, then I had to push. Luckily it was about 100 yards to the petrol pump :D

That was before we did the carbs though, and they were running slightly lean then. The 46 miles to the gallon was done from Haverfordwest to the western end of the M4. it was exactly 46 miles between 2 petrol stations, and the tank was full after putting 1 gallon into it. But it wasn't constant cruising as there are a few roundabouts and some roadworks/traffic, so I don't know how the hell I managed it.

:dancingfool: I`M EXPECTING TO GET SLIGHTLY LESS THAN 46 MPG.AINT GOT A CLUE REALLY MAYBE RUFF CAN GIVE ME A IDEA?BUT HAVE FULL INTENTION OF GETTING THE TRIKE TUNED FOR PERFORMANCE HAS OPPOSED TO GOOD FUEL CONSUMPTION. ANDY

LOL, yeah MH, I'd say you are safe in that assumption mate!! Ah, but you could fit an ol beer keg or something over the back axle and re-configure it as a fuel tank!!! I saw something like this done on a trike at the birmingham bike show a few years back and it was a beaut. The bike was done in a jack daniels theme and the fuel tank was behind the driver, a stainless steel vessel but wrapped in wood planks and steel bands to look like a keg with JD logo burned on the wood, nice job...

Stage 3 + Pods = 85 Miles to the tank (mostly cruising, and running down a few young punks and putting them in their place with an '85)!! :cool10:

I can run 120-130 miles b4 reserve however, I have not yet mastered the tecnique of "easing into the throttle"

Driving normal I can usually get between 110 and 125 KM on a tank than I got reserve to go to for another 30 or so. with a little more aggressive throttle that drops to 100 to as low as 78 KM as I done on mine last yera than reserve now that aint to bad is it lol.

Last year I put a fuel filter going to the carbs but could never get it routed right to keep the carbs from starving. Any recommendations on fuel line(size), length and fuel filter type that someone has had sucess with?

Is that for your 900 or 1K?

For the record, I normally hit reserve between 70 and 75 miles. Don't know how far reserve will take me and I ain't looking to find out by pushing it to the nearest gas station! And if someone can school me on how to "ease into the throttle", I'm all ears.

That is my 1000, I have it running a little rich, only getting about 25MPG! I didn't buy an Eliminator for the fuel economy!

the veypor I have installed on my zl1000 give average and instant fuel cosumption data.

generally max mpg 6th gear is going to be 37-38mpg and average use comes in about 30-35 mpg. And that is just about spot on accurate.

46 mpg??? either down hill both ways or maybe your calcualtor is broken..
