New front rotor?

What is the best way to tell if you need a new front rotor? Is there a certain rule to tell if its worn? I have grooves in my rotor but how do i tell if they too deep?
 
Get a mic or go to a brake shop and use theirs to check the thickness of your rotor. The rotor itself should have a minimum thickness printed on the disk. Use the mic in the deepest groove and see what it is. If it's still thicker than the minimum then you can have it resurfaced. If not then you should replace the rotor and put new pads on. Even if you have fairly new pads on, they will have raised sections on it from the grooves of the old disk so should be replaced.

Where do i take it to get resurfaced? Any brake shop, or does it have to be a motorcycle shop. Thanks
 
Assuming the ZL600 discs are the same as the ZL900/1K (i.e. not floating or semi floating) any competent machine shop should be quite capable of doing the job for you, so long as they run true when completed.

I would only machine the active portion of the disc though (the section the pads run on). To resurface the whole face on both sides of the disc will reduce its rigidity. As these are not floating discs they need to remain pretty solid on their mounts to ensure smooth brake operation.

Most machine shops should be capable of advising up front if machining will exceed the minimum thickness limits as marked on the disc. If you find they need to be replaced, they may even be able to manufacture replacements of your design. These are fairly simple to copy; you only need be sure the material used is suitable.

Thanks for the help. I am not going to do it till winter. Well here in chicago, prolly about a couple weeks. But i am gonna do everything over winter because i know midway through next season it will have to be done, and i hate to miss riding time.
 
JUST GOT REPLY FROM A GUY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE POND REGARDING FULL REBUILD GASKET KIT FOR MY THOU.HE WANTS $137 FOR THE KIT AND$50 SHIPPING THE SHIPPING SEEMS A LITTE OVER THE TOP OR AM I JUST BEING TIGHT :detective: WHAT DO YOU THINK??? ANDY :pale:
 
I think it is pretty reasonable considering that the head gasket alone is $55 US. The shipping is pretty high but if it is packed well and no damage.....
 
I`M NOT QUESTIOMIMG THE PRICE OF THE KIT ,I THINK IT`S GOOD VALUE JUST THINK POSTAGE IS ON THE HIGH SIDE,MAKES IT SEEM LESS OF A BARGAIN(TO MY MIND ANYWAY)STILL CHEAPER THAN OVER HERE EVEN INCLUDING POSTAGE...... ANDY
