Awright....Here it is, the big doozie, the numero uno, the question on everyone's mind...
Which bike is faster the ZL900 or ZL1000?
And by faster of course I mean in the 1/4 mile....Stock to stock....I can't find an answer, and the more people you ask, the more different answers (opinions) you get.
Does anyone know, hard and fast, and once and for all.
Speak up!
moab...

Theres a reason for a trip to the drag strip if ever there was one......

DW might have a definitive answer??

Depends on who is riding what!!
I will pit my ZL1k against anybody's 9 but CHRIS'
Anybody that can "blow away" a Vmax scares me!

but about a week ago, some punk on a VMAX was tempting me, & since a cannot shift too well with my toes, i used my heel. i may have looked funny to this guy a first, but i literally tore him a new a--hole !
I'm not saying that my ZL1k will beat a stock 9, just sayin I am not too proud to get an ass whoopin!!

Everything that I have read states that the 9 is faster in the 1/4 BUT they also state that the 9 can't hold up in a "roll on"

I don't doubt that Mark and I will settle this, at least between our two...First I gotta get my valves set, and maybe a couple other things too..........

I would love to take that wager, except the fact that I'm some 2K miles away. :stir:

With my first 900, I went up against my roommate on his 1K. Both stock bikes, similar mileage (about 4K), similar weight riders. We jumped on them from about 20 mph up to about 90 mph and the 900 was pulling away, not by much but it was pulling away (we never did any kind of roll on race). I think it depends more on the rider and how fast you can bang through the gears for a 1/4 mile race. The roll on would probably go to the 1K. From what I remember from riding one, the torque curve was a bit better suited.

call me crazy, but i am presently, in addition to working on dad's bike, adding a few goodies to my bike ! some of you will have to wait until mid-ohio 2008 to inspect in person !!! but, remember i'm not telling :nonono: :D for wuputt, & mark, you guys will see very soon !

i am very pleased with the progress so far, but this winter is when i really plan to stick $$$$$ in ELEANOR ! :ignore: CHRIS :cool10:

I suspect it depends on what particular day it is. When 2 vehicles are so close it usually boils down to who had the better day, looking at the bore and stroke I give the edge to the 9 however I would like to see both sets of specs, valve timing, rod length etc. Then i would pick a theoretical winner, it won't be me as i baby mine too much, if I had one to play with I'd be in. Like alot of members on this site i suspect I DON"T LIKE TO LOSE, PERIOD.

Driver
particular bike on a particular day
Theres your winner.
All you racin' guys know that

Oh yeah show me a HP and torque curve too.

The zl1000 and the zl900 share the exact same head, cams, and sprockets

11008-1177 Cylinder Head
12044-1151 Intake Cam
12044-1152 Exhaust Cam
12046-1082 Sprockets

So if you ever wanted to Mod the zl900 you could easily bolt on the zl1000 carb holders(16065-1146) and 34mm carbs. Of course this would go good with a performance exhaust and velocity stacks or pods.

I'm curious to what else is identical in the engine, and what other bikes share them.

Okay guys here it is from the Sept.'86 issue of Cycle magazine. Cycle's test of the 900 pulled a 1/4 mile time of 11.07 @123.25 mph. The 1000 test results were 11.14 @ 119.21. The other times that I know of are 2.17 seconds 0-50 for the 900 and 2.2 seconds 0-60 on the 1000.

many people do not take this into consideration but the bike weight and the rider weight can have a big effect on performance too. 2 riders with a 50 lbs diff on the same bike will have different outcome. the 1000 has a larger tank and maybe some other things that could give it a weight disadvantage. otherwise i think they are pretty much the same except for bigger jugs on the 1000.

More numbers!
Taken from the Motorcyclist Mag., Sept. '86

The 1000 whips through the 1/4 mile in 11.22 seconds with the terminal speed of 118.5 mph. corrected for weather conditions thats .58 of a second quicker and 3.5 mph faster than the 900!

They go on to say-

The 1000 Eliminator actually ran a little slower in the roll-on than the last 900 we had due to extremely hot weather during testing.

Bottom line, even the Bike mags of the time couldn't come to an agreement! :stir: :stir:

Of course... but ya know I'm okay with little jugs too.
