Handlebar wobble

Starters and 20 yr old bikes

Gotta change the starter. GOt one off ebay for 5 bucks back in may so I have one.

Anyone know where to get a rebuild kit for a good price?

Gonna rebuild the old one and keep as a spare.

Least there is no faring but ya still have to drain the coolant, the oil, diconnect the water and oil lines to remove the starter.
 
i can get them fully rewound and reconditioned over here for about £15 but then i gues that doesn't help most of you guys very much really :wink:
 
I found a place online for about 49 US for all but the Armature.
 
I have developed a wobble (for lack of a better description) in the handlebars when hitting bumps at high-way speeds. When going slow it will do it only if I take my hands off the bars and goes away as soon as I grab the bars again. I have seen videos of this phenomena and it scares me. Anyone know what is going on?
 
worn or loose steering head bearings

wheel bearings

tires out of balance, improperly inflated. oddly worn...

may need a better set of rubber. there is no substitute for premium tires
 
I would check the wheel bearings ASAP, then adjust steering head and check the bearings too. Bearings are cheap and fairly easy to replace.
 
I DONT KNOW EXActly what i am talking about, so please will the mechanically astute chime in,

however, years ago i had the stock steering head bearings in my xj750 replaced with tapered bearings, or needle bearings(?) perhaps

the effect on handling was pronounced. steering far more stable, headshake gone. i was diving further into corners than i ever had before.
got to grinding pegs and even drifting tires.
i am not certain what the factory fitted the zl with.

has anyonre gone this route with their mount and has it proven beneficial?
 
Completely off topic but hey, bigjeffie, I had a '83 XJ750 about 15 years ago. I really loved that bike until I hit some ice and wrote it off.
 
i had the '82 maxim. it was my 1st street bike.
i rode the wheels off that thing.
to this day i have never ridden anything harder.
i practiced every day.

i got to where i threw it so hard so matter of factly that i got sideways one day and almost high-sided.

After forming a nice right angle with the double yellow lines, i let got of it and starting doing pete rose base stealing imitations.

that hurt like a sumbitch.
felt like a 90 yr old man that somebody beat with a rolling pin.
 
oh man, that bike was the making of me, rode the thing like an idiot through rain sun and snow really felt like it was part of me. Raced everything that was on the road and really surprised some people.

Better run before the Zl police catch up :D
 
Problem solved, simple fix. romove handel bars, loosen head nut, use a drift snd small hammer to tighten lower star nut until tight, loosen back up until sterring moves freely, tighten jam nut, reinstall. took about 20 minutes. No more rattle or wobble. Thanks all I can go fast now.
