k and n filter pods falling off

i put on some k and n filter pods but the outside ones fall off real easy if bumped or whatever. any suggestions from anybody would be helpful.

ive got Pods on my Z900,,yeah,they come unglued off the mounting plate......'GLUE"............like Elwood Blues used on that vans excellerator pedal...........strong glue.........loll.......
&make sure its dried&wont get sucked into chamber,.....i think i used areldite?....
seems typical of these....

their not popping off carbs?.........
 
It helps to have the inner lip of the filter and the outer rim of the carb clean of all oil. Take a little carb cleaner sprayed on a rag and wipe these surfaces down. Also don't over-tighten the clamps, they will push the filter off. My plan was to design something I could bolt to the frame to keep my legs from bumping them, but the weathers been so rainy, I haven't had any time to ride. If I ever get anything done, I will post it.
 
There used to be a "fix" on this site in the old garage/modifications thread before the big crash of '05.

What some folks had done was grab a piece of flat aluminium/aluminum, cut it to length, drill some clearance holes in it at the right centre distance to fit across the backs of the pod filters ..

Then carefully drill a hole in the centre of the backs of each pod ensuring the swarf/chips didn't get stuck in the filter itself and put a self-tapper into each pod, through this piece of flat bar.

This helped "support" each filter and ensured if a pod did "pop" that it wouldn't actually fall off.

The discussion on here gave a diagram with centre distance for drilling the piece of flat etc but without the "search" function working here it makes it hard to find the article IF it's still on the site.

Will see what I can dig up re measurements etc for ya.

As for the template of the strip, all you need do to get the measurements is remove the filter pods and measure the distances from the extreme left (or right) of the No1 carburettor inlet port to the same point on No2 and so on, just make sure the ruler/straight edge is at the centreline of the carburettor throats. To make sense of this, when you have this transferred to a test piece, just move the No1 point to the centre of the No1 carburettor throat and you’ll note that the others move to the centre likewise.

Now this piece can be screwed to the rear face of your pods and will match perfectly. To ensure there’s no strange loads on the pods, make sure the carburettors are seated correctly in the engine inlet rubbers and that these are mounted in the correct position on the cylinder head (not twisted out of alignment).
 
Hello all,
This is similar to the fix Rossco1 and Rocket mentioned. If you are no longer using the Chrome side covers, you can use a small diameter piece of steel/aluminum/whatever bar stock and bend it to make a nice little bracket that bolts to the old mounts on the frame. It bolts to the frame and then buts up against the back of the pods - makes a nice tight fit that way. I have this on my bike and have not lost a pod yet. I have pics of it if you are interested in seeing it. I'll try to keep an eye on this thread in case anyone is interested in pics. Later.
 
K & N Fix - No Bracket needed...

Easiest fix for the infamous disappearing K&N filter is, like posted earlier, wipe the inside of the filter boots and the carbs outer mounting flange with a cleaner that dries (carb cleaner, rubbing alcohol, etc...). Next, throw the supplied K&N clamps in the trash, as they are nothing but crap anyway... go to your local auto parts / hardware store and P/U 4 WIDER radiater hose clamps. The wider clamp will give you more clamping range, without trying to squeeze the filter boot off of the carb!!

I have had mine on and off the bike several times, and they NEVER fell off while riding for over 2000 miles now.

i had the same problem. i went with the aluminum bar method. 1/4 inch thickness i think. only i drilled one hole on each end to screw to each outer pod and one hole in between where the #2 and # 3 pod would go. on the 2 and 3 pod i cut some velcro and attached it to the bar and those two pods so i didn't have to worry about lining up two extra holes. then with the extra hole i drilled in the middle i ran some wire like you would use to hold your hood down on a car and rand it around the frame crossbar that is right above the pods. took about 30 minutes and seems to have worked great. you have to really look to see the bar. and even then it looks clean. will post a pic if it's possible on this site.
 
same prob here too, i made sure they are clean and dry then don't over tighten. i also threaded a small mechanics wire through the bottom of all four just in case.
 
I did the same trick, a small piece of wire through each filter and attached that to the carbs. Its saved me buying 3 new filters in the last 3 months.

Nice photos lowlife, how long does it take to polish all those trophies though?
 
Scooters rock! I'll have to stop posting now so i don't lose that ranking.

Thats about 1/3 of the trophies, basically they are dust collectors, we are thinking of recycling them except for the state and midwest regional championship.

The karts are a blast. We are thinking of taking a week or 2 off and just go around the country to race at a few different tracks. She needs a tune up as she hasn't raced in 2 years do to medical problems. She ran autocross last year cuz its not a contact sport and the Dr ok'ed it. (red car).
