Noise from Front of ZL900

I know this topic has been covered in the past, but I dont remember seeing a result....

Many of us have had an issue with a rattling / vibrating noise on the ZL900's @ about 2500 RPM. Happens often when downshifting for a stop. This noise seems to come from the tank area. After restoring my bike, and finally thinking I had everything covered while apart, the noise is still there. I have found out now that the noise is actually coming from the cooling fan!! Seems the fan likes the 2000-3000 RPM range to vibrate and turn just enough to make this annoying noise!! Mine is loud enough to be almost embarrasing!!

Has anyone else had this issue, and repaired it without the expense of an outrageously priced new Kawi Fan Assy?? If so, what was done??

Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah, i get that noise too and always assumed it was the tank/cap. I'd be very interested in how to get it to stop.
 
I've had a similar noise and found it was the frame that holds the cooling fan, just touching the downpipes. The cause was the rubber mounts for the radiator. New rubber mounts.........No noise..........Happy bunny

During the restoration, I replaced EVERY bushing or pad that was made of rubber or nylon. Since it was over a year ago when I was messing with the radiator, I dont remember rubber pads / bushings, so I will look into it!! I found the culprit (fan) when I was doing a carb sync, and was able to reach the top of the fan with the tank removed. I physically saw the fan vibrate and move at about 2500 RPM. Before the engine heated up too far, I was able to hold the fan while revving up to 2500, and the noise was gone. Now I just have to figure out how to repair it, so I dont have to keep my hand in there while riding!! 8O

I do know it was not the gas lid, as I already tried stuffing a rag underneath it, to put pressure on it when closed.

I will check into it over the weekend, and post some results.

Mine does the same thing, between 2K and 3K. More noticeable when cold, but very irritating. I don't know if changing to a metal blade would make any difference, you see them on eBay from time to time. I replaced all the bushings also along with replacing all the hardware from the radiator and shroud. Noise is still there. Hope someone comes up with a fix, I'm not going to worry about it until winter.
 
Radiator bushings? Damn, i thought it was the muffler bearings.

My zl900 has had vibration sounds also over the years. First it was the gas cap - took care of that with the usual stuffing crap around it. Now I have another vibration sound - I've heard for a long time about the fan but never really checked mine out. The other day while riding it sounded more like it was coming from the upper front of the bike, so I reached out and grabbed/put pressure on the front of the headlight - wala!!! Seems my headlight bezel (chrome ring) or the bracket or something inside the headlight housing is making the vibrating noise. May not be the same sound you are hearing but you might check into it. Later.
 
The luckiest guy is the one that didn't get hit by the bike up against the wall. Unlucky for all that came off but at least it looked like they got up to ride another day. Seems the guy blowing smoke must of had an oil line blow or blew something in the engine and it cracked throwing oil everywhere.
