Check it out...I'm a Vet!

I just noticed that i'm a Veteran Eliminator now. I guess until a couple of posts ago, i was a Master Eliminator.

You know, that whole "Master Eliminator" thing always made me feel like i was a kid who had just mastered my potty training. But now i'm a Veteran Eliminator...so what's that mean?...that i'm an Old Fart?!?!

At least i can break wind faster than most of the other riders out there.

Thanks for the promotion. When do i get my raise?

Just re-read some posts about the "Mice hate the smell of cats."

No more pay just more responsibility

So, I picked up a complete but very negelected ZL1000 for $640. It hadn't started in over 10 years and spent the last 2 outside with only a blue tarp loosely covering it. Good news it only has 3600 mile on it and appears never to been dropped and everything looks pretty good. I already pulled the carbs and found the gas had turned to a good varnish(really nice stuff)..any thoughts would be appreciated....where can i get pods and pipe

Welcome aboard ZL, My tank was also in bad shape when I got it. I took some 1/2 nuts (be sure and count how many) and put them in the tank along with two cans of B-12 and then I would go out and shack the tank all around for a few minutes about every hour or so until the tank was nice and shiny inside. Bought a pitcock rebuild kit off e-bay, and soaked the carbs. You can get pods from your locall autozone or orilleys but you will have to rejet. Hope this gets you started, you will find a wealth of info on this site, my bike would still be in pieces if it wasn't for all the friendly and helpfull members.

Peace :cool10:

Welcome zl1000nyc!

Just want to throw this out there, the bike is worth more stock.

Aftermarket exhaust there is the Holeshot, D&D, SuperTrapp and Cobra. D&D is readily available as well as the Holeshots. Get in touch with KrayZ1 (zl-oa member) he's a D&D dealer.

Welcome brother ZL freak! You got a good deal on that one fo sho! Get some pics on the gallery so we can watch your progress! We love b-4 and after pics. Just a hint for the tank, I did the nuts deal and had a hell of a time getting them all out, I then used a length of chain (about 2 feet) that worked GREAT! Use fairly heavy chain, like 1" link welded worked fine for me.

Good luck on your project!

Welcome ZL1000nyc :D
For that money - you got the bargain of the century :dancingfool:

ZLMark has made a very good point about the bike being worth more stock.
If you get her up and running in original spec - you can decide then if you want to spend time and money customising her.
You may want to source some carb rubbers (parts depot?) - as getting the carbs back in is literally a pain :pale:
My advice would be to change all the fluids and flush her out. Then keep an eye on your rad and hoses when you start to use her - in case there are perforations waiting to spring a leak. :nonono:
This applies to any bike standing for so long !
Regards,
Vin

Wuputt is right about getting the nuts out, I had to use a magnet and some patience. Some of the nuts did get wedged in a few times thats why the need to count, the link of chain sounds like a good idea as well. I will also agree with Mark about the value of the bike. There are lots of threads about pods and pipes, but I think you will find the biggest complaint is dialing in the bike after you make the mods. I am seriously considering buying new carb rubbers and trying to get the stock airbox back on myself.

The above link has parts diagram for you to get the part numbers.
The links below are sites that you can get parts much cheaper than you can from Kawasaki.

It definitly pays to shop around!
If you need tires, go to the link below.

ZLmark, would you add the donalson and ronayers links to the home page?

thanks for all the responses!!!!I know i scored..when i got this bike! Im just glad that i found this forum...there isnt a a whole lot out there pertaining to the ZL1000. My BIGGEST worry is getting those cabs back on..as i was getting them off i was thinking "how the F i'm i ever going to get these back in", i literally had to pry the carb rubbers out with a screw driver just to have enough room to wiggle the carbs out o the intake boots!!
are there any tricks to make this easier?????Jason

lol, Oh yeah, we all know how fun that particular job can be...

I recommend partial innebriation, lots of WD40 and a spare pair of hands with a prybar at the ready. You will probably curse a lot and there is quite a good chance you will spill a lil blood.... but hey, its all the fun of it, isn't it...?

Go get a pair of new air box rubbers as mark suggested and it wil make it a breeze to get them back on, the old ones harden with age.. I did it the hard way with the original airbox rubbers and it is possible but it will take you quite a while to do it.

I struggled a few times with my old airbox rubbers and tore one of my intake holders, found out for the zl900 they are discontinued. So it's important to us zl900 owners to R&R carbs easily. Luckily the airbox boots are the same as the ZG1000(Concours)

im gonna order the new ones...there is NO WAY there going back on right..the rubber isnt that bad..but when i pried them out of the air box..you can see what fresh rubber looks like...any one got a good link to find the rubber booots ? or do I have to go to the dealer?THANKS!!!

Make sure you get the airbox rubbers in the correct position as it does matter which one go where. :)
