I can’t say this is your problem but it was once mine.
The unfortunately design feature of this bike/engine is that it doesn’t have a centre stand and the cam chain is on the left hand side of the donk. So when you lean it over on the side stand the water collects and pools on the rocker cover with nowhere to go because the cam chain housing forms a dam. One of the first things I discovered on mine was that a previous owner (not me, no honest it wasn’t me) had changed the plugs but didn’t ensure the crush washers came out with the old plugs (the two offending plugs happened to be No’s 1 & 2). This caused the new plugs to sit proud above two crush washers each and thus preventing the plug cap boots from seating all the way down against the rocker cover. So as you might imagine, my plug holes were full of water. So then I removed the water, took out the extra washers, and refitted the plugs and leads and all was good.
Well not quite so, a couple of weeks later I washed her again and the same thing happened, no start and plug holes full of water. It turns out that after I took her for a ride following the first wash there must have been a little water left in the plug holes and when it boiled off it popped the boots off their seats. So, not aware of this they filled up again during this wash!!! Bloody hell, didn’t this one give me a head ache, how did the water get in there after I’d already removed the plugs and refitted them? All I could think of was the plugs must have been wet/moist (i.e. not entirely dry) and that was enough to make steam. Anyway this time I used the wench’s hair dryer after I removed the water. Problem now solved… permanently.
