ZL900 valve removal

Hi all:

I am currently on a mission to remove the valves from the top end of my 1985 ZL900. In referring to the service manual for the bike, the following tools are specified to be used in the removal of the 16 valves:

1) Valve Spring Compressor Assembly (57001-241)
2) Adapter (57001-1019)
3) Valve Guide Arbor (57001-1021)
4) Valve Guide Reamer (57001-1079)

However, when I go to the "buykawasaki.com" website (where I get part numbers from when I need to order replacement parts for the ZL900), there is no record for these tools.

So, my question is this: Do any of y'all know who sells these tools, or are there alternate vendors/manufacturers of these tools that will enable me to remove the valves?

Thanks very much.

Be very careful to check out the prices fro these special tools from Kawasaki. I once enquired about a clutch holding tool and they wanted silly silly silly money for it years ago. (turned out to be a fancy shaped pair of self grip pliers/mole grips)

You may be better (and cheaper) taking the complete head to a reconditioners . You would probably get the whole job done for what it costs you for the Kawasaki tools.

Just my opinion

Thanks KK.

But, believe it or not, I like working on the bike as much as I like riding it!

I don't mind doing it myself just to get the satisfaction of having done it (even if I do a less-than-professional job).

So, with that in mind, do you know of any alternative tool-sellers that might sell tools comparable to the ones I listed above?

Thanks very much!

I believe you, mine has kept me out of the pub for years and at the moment there are 3 bikes in my stable all waiting for various rebuilds etc.

As far as tools are concerned, the valve spring compressor (not a Kawasaki one) should be available from auto stores. The adaptor is for the specific shape/size of the valve spring retainer to enable it to be compressed to remove the 'split keeper' I'm sure you could manufacture one of these yourself. As far as the arbor goes, its a punch (drift).

Where you may have problems is the reamer. Since we don't know the exact size of Kawasaki's tool you would need some pretty accurate measurements from the valve and guide to determine the correct size, although a good engineering shop could be able to help you out there.

I'm unsure of you engineering abilities but you sound like a guy who is willing to give it a go. Most of this stuff is fairly easy and straightforward but there are times when its critical you get some proffessional engineering help. knowing that you've reached that point is where the skill lies. IMHO

Hope this helps

ZL900 valve removal

Elimax,
as far as removing the valves is concerned, I just use a ring spanner. Assuming the head's already off the donk, all I do is place it on a clean flat rubber mat with a rag rolled up under the valve (to stop the valve from opening). Then I place a suitable sized ring spanner over the spiring retainer and press down until the collets fall out. This usually works first go and is much quicker than using a compressor.

Putting them back in is the same method only you'll need an assistant (she needs to be wearing coveralls so you don't distracted) to place the collets back into position while you depress the springs.

I hope this helps, sorry if you’ve already forked out for a valve spring compressor.

Well, I ended up fashioning a valve spring compressor...

I bought one from Autzone (a pretty new-fangled one) that doesn't extend around the top end to support the valve heads...instead, it pulls the springs upwards while it holds down the spring retainer. Then I just rotate the handle of the tool to compress the spring upwards and use a magnet to pull out the collets.

Yee-haw!

do you have a pic of this thing or a url to their website (OEM or retailer)?

I'll be watching this one bidding if its decent price., if anyone plans to bid let me know. ZL900 whole motorcycle.

Well, you see, you take the bike, and you.....Well, it kinda happens when you, um......If you were to take the ZL and, uhhhh.......Nevermind, I don't know and can't think of a reasonable explanation, maybe someone picked the bike up, held it upside down and ShOoK it, real hard.....Or maybe it was gremlins, or lawn gnomes or something.....Maybe someone with a real big eye needed a monicle.....HURRICANE in Muncie!!!!!
I'm out of reasons.....
moab...
