ZL1000

I just got this bike, this month carbs were gummed up. I cleaned them up ran great ecept the carbs flooded if petcock left on now it wont run like it did kinda boggy hard to get 9,500 rpm the fuel in floots I set with the tube method except the level is never the same, fuel in #1 carb wont be the same by the time #4 is set constantly chasing the fuel level, at least after pulling the carbs for the 4th time and cleaning seats and new needles it is better at holding the fuel level just marginaly. it idles good runs smooth on road but just no power I have a 1980 KZ1000 that will jerk the Eliminators tires off as its goes by. any suggestions??? I am very disapointed in this bike

There are two issues. The petcock shouldn't let fuel by with no engine vacuum so you might have a bad diaphram. Second, the needles are not stopping the fuel or the level is set too high and fuel is leaking out the bowl gasket or vent tube. Using the clear tube method works good. Have the bike level and don't move the tube up or down once it starts to fill. I set mine just a half mm or so below the top lip of the bowl. Rebuild the petcock, and start over. Is it bogging in the upper RPM or just falling flat? And if you still disappointed, I get dibbs after zlMark. :)

gosupes,

you might have a bad diaphram

...or a bad 'O' ring which is controlled by the diaphragm

don't move the tube up or down once it starts to fill.

Actually there's no risk in moving the tube down as this simply allows more fuel into the tube and the bowl refills as per normal, this is how we confirm the levels, move down, stabilise, check, down again, stabilise and check again. If however the tube is raised the fuel in the tube will run back into the bowl and thus will result in a false reading as it would raise the level above the point where the float would ordinarily shut off the supply from the needle and seat. I wish we had a gallery, I could show pics of how I set mine up on a special mount in the vice, horizontal and with a fuel source. This meant I didn't have to worry about access and keeping the bike level and the carbs were already out of the bike.

Otherwise you're spot on with your diagnosis...

DanR, honestly mate, stick with it and after you resolve this small issue I'm confident you'll be glad you did, ask anyone on this forum...

hey thanks for the replys!! well took carbs off again cleaned all jets found some kind of varnish in slow air jets cleaned em in ultra sonic cleaner until clean, also cleaned seats again, set fuel level until perfect, new plugs, petcock diaphram, it runs up without hesitation idles great runs smooth down road aceleration is good but still disapointed, unless i have two Kawasaki's that are exceptional (80 KZ1000 an a 83 1100) heck i am shifting outa 4 gear and blasting off when the ZL is running outa steam, this bike only has 7,770 miles on it, anyway thanks for responding guess I should have bit the bullet an got a new ZX14 lol

Man i had a 82 KZ1000J and i know my zl900 would put a whoopin on it. Keep searching you might rejuvenate some of those lost ponies somewhere.

DanR,
before you jump the gun, and pass the problem to the buyer, this is not indicative of the model. Hey, the bike you know is better than the one you don't. Is your next one going to be brand new?

Honestly mate, it'd be worth the effort to source the fault. Actually it sounds to me that you're running out of top end and this may be a simple restriction in the exhaust. Are any of the pipes squashed, have the inner tubes cracked or broken away and perhaps partially blocking the system somewhere, maybe the collector box?

But then again there are many of us who would love to get our teeth into something even if only to get us out of the kitchen. Hope you get close to what you would like for it, hate to see you let it go with bitter memories.

Hmmm ... opportunity knocks guys :D

How about some details of your location/asking price etc Dan??

Maybe someone here would be kind enough to take it off your hands if only to help alleviate some of your disappointment for you ... they're a very helpful bunch here :D

the bike is in SW Oklahoma, what I would like to do is trade it for an older model ZR12R. this bike (ZL1000) was designed for stoplight wars, it is blazing fast through 1/8 or 1/4 mile and the specs list a 130 topend and my bike does fit the bill but where I live its 50 to 75 miles between stoplights we have wide open spaces. I made poor choice for the conditions here, I am used to when hitting a 120 still having strong aceleration not running out of steam. there is nothin wrong with the bike its just way it was designed the motor is runing perfect it was my expectations that is off lol

HOPE YOUR TAKING YOUR 6 WEEKS SUMMER(THERES A LAUGH) HOLIDAY TIME TO GET THAT THOU ON THE ROAD,LOOKING FORWARD TO A RIDE OUT,FORCAST MUCH BETTER FOR NEXT MONTH.... GOOD LUCK MATE ANDY :stir: :stir: :stir: :stir: :blackeye:

It had better be bett3er weather next month, it's my birthday on the 29th. Won't be impressed if it's bad weather :(

No, not fishing for cards. Just reminding all of you of your age when I say that I'm turning 22 next month, hehe.

The worst part is that as of Monday 30th July, I'm no longer going out with a teenager :ignore:

Hey Andy,
haven't done much to the Thou yet!
Only managed to get her off the trailer and had a play getting that rusted brake mounting bolt out!
Will lift the front wheel (with my superbike stand - slots into the headstock), take out the front wheel and then grind whats left of the bolt head off. Then remove brake mounting plate and then the stub of the bolt! Sounds simple don't it!
I have built a garden wall using stone blocks, and dug out a trench for a retaining wall, so that I can start on building a proper garage for my bikes, and maybe an extension on my house ! (Garage first !).
Its a bit off a pain dodging round the weather all the time, but I am making progress and hope to find some time soon for the bikes :D
How's the Rocket bub ? Did you get that damage fixed OK ?
Hope the weather is fine for all you good folkd out there :D
Keep 'em Suhiney side up :dancingfool:
