Ok guys, here's the deal

I think we are back online with everyone on their proper user Id's etc. at least I hope so. We lost a couple of posts that came on recently., sorry about that, but to get everyone straight it had to happen.

For anyone that cares, right now the forum is seperate from the site. I am still looking into good ways to integrate the two. The problem I am trying to avoid is using components that don't bridge well so as to make it where I have to wait for one component to be updated before I can update another one. This is where the security problems come in, and I'd rather not have us hacked all the time :)

Please let me know if posts aren't coming out right, but everything should be kosher now.... I hope....

Ethan ...

Thanks heaps for all the work you've put in .. it's very much appreciated!! :D .... All looks good from here! :D :D :D

those who have reworked the ignition system:
is this a good idea, a way to enhance an older bike?
does spark quality degrade over time?
what are the benefits of an advancer (as tho I even know what that is beyond a very generic defintion)

My one and only experience of an ignition advancer was when my brother fitted a kit to his stage III tuned TZR250. It made a marginal improvement to the acceleration and eventually melted holes in the top of his pistons from over tweaking... It did make a difference from the stock set up though... for a while...lol
I suppose if fitted and set up correctly on your zl, they would be beneficial... I believe theres some on here with the advancer fitted, it would be interesting to hear their experience.

For me, it added a little bit to the low end. It will also allow you to run a little richer as the longer duration allows for more burn time.

As for the ignition, yes things degrade over time, usually in the form of excess resistance, but it's usually minor. Newer bikes and cars use resistor plugs. The ZL's use a resistor in the cap, not in the plug. These resistors can gt flaky or go open. The caps are screwed into the copper core of the wire which can develop a poor connection from vibration or corrosion.

I replaced my boots and wires about 2 years ago and made a big difference since I had a crack in one of the boots. Carquest sold the spark plug wire by the foot and Iron Pony had the boots. Not as long as the original boots but it works. I know someone found the original boots overseas, but a little hard to find here.

Does anyone here have actual first-hand knowledge relative to the "up-side or the down-side" of installing an ignition spark advancer?

I'm considering installing a Vance & Hines 5 degree spark advancer, however I'm more than just a little spooked at the thought of turning my piston tops into crispy critters over time. Sure could use the input from anyone knowing these answers.

I have one in mine and really can't say I notice a difference. I keep it on the richer side anyways to keep it cool. I found out later that Dale Walker recommends no more than 4°. That being said, if I were to buy another one it would be from DW!

I have a Dale Walker 4 degree advance, I have yet to install it, however, it is rumored to increase the 'snappiness' of accelleration, I will hopefully be installing this item sooner rather than later, and will with any luck be able to give at least a 'seat of the pants' performance eval as well as documenting the installation process for the tech documents, although it seems very straight forward...The snappiness quote came from Dale Walker.
I installed as well a set of Accel performance coils as I had been experiencing some issues with misfiring and I like the accel coils very much except thet do not fit in the stock location as they are alot bigger than the stockers, I have noticed (at least it seems) improved idle quality and maybe slightly better throttle response, although this may be psychological rather than mechanical.
Hope this helps!

Thanks to both Mark and Moab for the input on the spark advancer question. That 1 degree spread difference sure doesn't seem significant. However, it's likely that Dale Walker sees better results indicated on a dyno read out. It seems reasonable to conclude that this minute difference may not be readily apparent to the sensory perceptions of us "poor old seat-of-the-pants home tuner guys"....Ha ha.

zl900 moab - I know what you're saying regarding the psychology of wanting to believe the latest performance install did in fact make a noticiable difference. I'll stand-by and await your future post on the spark advancer install. Good luck with that one.

Regarding the coils, I'm trying to decide between the Dyna Coils or the Accels. As I understand it, they're both top-quality products and either product adequately delivers the needed juice.

Don't know anything about the Accels, except moab says they do not fit in the stock location due to size.

I have the dynas and they fit nicely. Very sturdily made and have had no problems with them.

Hope this helps.

Kawboy, thanks for the input on those coils. It's always good to hear reports from someone currently using a particular product.

The Accel coils sre mounted under the seat (thanx to lowlife), as I do not have an airbox, but if this were not an option, the Dynas are no doubt a high-quality product, I have owned Accel coils before and that is why I purchased them this time as well...Work well and look very trick with the custom installation, but if there were not the room there, you would NOT be able to squeeze them in the stock spot.

You have not done your homework - that will be 3 months detention young man. What's that I see? A set of Accel's - in the STOCK location? Hahahaha. I've had these installed in this location for a very long time. It can be done - a pic is worth a 1000 words.......Later.

My accel coils are under the tank also, but next valve adjustment they go under the seat. Saw Lowlife's looked real clean!

Thanks to Moab, Jarney, Kawboy & Elim8u....I'll take all of your opinions into account when it comes time to make a final decision on the coils. Your insights are much appreciated.

Haven't heard much return-chatter though on the spark advancer question. Unsure of what to conclude from that silence...(??).

As I stated before, I will install my 4 degree DW one soon, then will have a 'seat of the pants' eval of before vs. after performance, as well as a tech. document to go with it...Supposed to increase throttle response, make the bike 'snap' better, according to DW.

Elim8u...I have the coils mounted under my seat, but lowlife did the fabbing of the bracket for me (did an excellent job too!)
Do you have your airbox still? If not, I will get some pics of the bracket and wiring for you, if you are interested....Keep in mind that I only took about 2 inches off the plug wires when I mounted them, so if you have shortened yours you may have to buy new wires...But I think it is a real clean look and having a peek of those big Accel coils there makes 'em think twice...Lemme know!

Boots are still available from Kaw....I bought four new ones about 7-8 mo ago...Bout $30 each

I am interested in putting dyna coils on my 900.....Which coils are the right ones? Where do you recommend buying them??
