Scott, the Motorcycle Service Manual you'll need is the ZX900 (part No 99924-1048-01). This is the base manual and the ZL900/1000 Motorcycle Service Manual Supplement compliments it for our bikes (mostly ZL900 but the ZL1000 unique info is in section 18 at the back). These supplement basically only contain info that's specific for those bikes as much of the tech stuff is the same as the ZX900 (GPz900R).
The base manual would still be subject to copyright (still in print) however you can get it online if you do a little searching (or buy one on eBay). For the ZL supplement, try Henrick's site (CD also available on eBay):

I know you're only reasonably new to the site with 10 posts already and you may not really know us all that well, but when we can, we like to get together for rides. Knowing where everyone is helps (if not your address then at least the state/area).

my Zl900, the mods are endless. custom driveshaft,added 4 inch. droped 2 inch front and back. targa body, stage 3 jets,head ported and poloshed in cali, new .30 over pistons, new cams, 5th gear change, timing advance, coils,custom supertrap exhust, nos fogger system that is verry well hiddin,170 80 15 tire, did have slick and a wheelie bars, ran low 9' in the 1.4 mile at norwalk. with that setup. i need better gears! runs more like a 1/8 mile bike rilly good take off. very one of a kind, hope u all like it!invested about $15000 so fare
