How Do You Get At The Starter Clutch????

'87 ZL600:
Well, the starter clutch has been grinding for a year now. It's finally to the point where it won't turn the engine over, just spins and makes an awful racket. It's my daily rider, so it's hard for me to take it out of commission for a big fix.
Starter bench tests fine. Look in the hole for the starter, teeth on that gear look o.k. Look in the hole from the clutch side, can't see what's going on. One gear has VERY short teeth....
So how 'bout it? How do I get at the starter clutch? Please tell me I don't have to pull the engine. If you do, let me know where I can get aftermarket air filters for each carb. I'm sick of the 20 yr. old hard rubber boots and pointless airbox.
Thanks,
Tyson

K&N filters

tyson, Hey, I just ordered some K&N pod filters today. Normally they are around $178.00 or so and I got them for $115.89 with free shipping. The supplier on the net is WWW.ajusa.com. The only filters that are on sale right now are the ones for the 600. I looked at the prices for the 900 and 1000 and they are steep, full cost for any one looking. I thought I could get some pod filters for my 1000 as well but at this cost I will wait.
Can't help you with the other question. Furchin

K&N has the Jet kit on Ebay for 35.00 get some UNI PODS for 14.00 or Emgo PODS for about 7.00

The Diameter is 51mm

The UNI is UP-4200 2" ID x 4" HGT

Jetted mine on my 600 and I use the Emgo on 1 and 4 outside Chromed and 2 and 3 have the UNIs they are black

Runs fine airbox is gone, just get a hose and filter for the crackcase vent and plug the other hose.

Thanks for the good sources guys. I'll definitely order a set.

Hey Tyson, Dont know if the 6 is the same as the 900/1000, If so you will have to pull the Engine and Split the Cases to get at it 8O , Later Rocky

Eliminutter, darn it... I think you're right. I just couldn't bring myself to believe it.

I'm working on an idea for building a quick disconnect hose assembly. here is what i have so far

Fuel Filter is a ff1203/g454 sourced from autozone which is a 5/16 straight metal filter. I'll be using fuel line repair fittings found In Automotive EFI. These fittings have a 90 degree head on them and you just squeeze the plastic insert to release them. I'll start at the carbs with a short piece of rubber 5/16 fuel line hose and the metal part of the EFI repair kit. The plastic 90 will snap straight onto this then run through the filter and then through another 90 disconnect then straight to the tap. I'll use all spring clamps to keep things tidy. This should work pretty good. The automotive line just isn't any good unless you use molded hose. With these fuel line repair 90's I wont have to worry about restrictive hoses and partial kinks. I originally wanted to use brass barbed 90's but cant find the damn things, well locally anyways. Of course I'll post the pics of the final product!

Any suggestions?

Hi ZLMark,
just read your thread on in line fuel filter - do the suppliers you mention have web sites ?
It would be nice to be able to order parts from a supplier recommended by a fellow ZL owner. :D
LOL,
Vin

Mark,

Whatever happened with this and are you running this filter now?

Do you know the micron rating of this filter?

Sorry Vinny,I missed your post  It's a metalk inline filter from autozone

The barbed brass nipples didn't work out and I'm thinking the best bet will be a clean tank and a pingel tap

I was but it's too darn hard to make this whole setup fit and look good on the zl900.

Fits good on the zl1000 with just hose and filter though.

Micron... I don't have a clue

I'm hoping to fit one on my ZL900.

I seem to be having the same luck as WillyD but not to his extent....just popping still.

My tank looked good inside and the petcock is new. I didn't pour the gas into a clear container so I'm not sure if I'm clogging the carbs with junk from the tank or not. I'm currently not running an inline filter. I'll try one of these autozone ones until I find something better.

Thanks,

Steve
