Fuel Injection???

has anyone tried to graft on a new injection system to a zl900 or 100 yet??? I.E.-new zx10r or z1000?

I know I keep returning to this, but I have read through a lot of the GPZ9 guys threads to find this ; :detective:
Main Bearing Cap Modification.

The oil hole thru the main bearing cap is not drilled in the center of the J-tube hole. The result is that when the J-tube is mounted the most part of the oil hole is covered by the end of the tube and the flow is restricted.

One easy way to fix this is to drill a 6mm hole 5mm deep in the center of the J-tube hole in the bearing cap, move the drill half the way towards the original oil hole and drill down an other 5mm, now you have a nice tapered passage for the oil with much less restriction. Make sure you don´t scar the sides of the 12mm hole as it acts as the surface for the J-tube O-ring.

I used a radial pressdrill with a 6mm cylindric mill bit and a 12mm knockpin for centering the centerhole, DON´T even think it can be done with a handheld powerdrill. It can be Dremel’d but make sure you don´t slip. Main Bearing Cap (the new oilpassage profile in red
be a diagram here !)

Will do the mod on the crank #4 main bearing cap (it provides the oil to the #4 crank main bearing, #3 rod big end and #4 rod big end) but IMO no need of doing anything to the crank #3 main bearing bushing oil hole as it only feeds one main bearing on the crank (this is from the smaller end on the modified J-tube).

I think this is the problem - all engine bushings gets worn and the oil pressure drops, #3 crank bushing leaks to much oil and with an unmodified J-tube it starves the oil to #4 crank, #3 rod and #4 rod, now you are most likely to get a spunn #3 rod bearing and a cracked case if the rod snap.

The oil tube mod. should give you more time and if you monitor the oilpressure you get an indication that the overall pressure is dropping and can change/check the bearing bushings in time.

My recomendation is when the engines has 50 000-60 000 km and if you are planning to keep the bike, change all the main bearings and rod bearings to be safe.

LOL

I dunno Vin,

You're kinda scarin me with all this talk about oil flow problems... Is there a consensus that these kawasaki's have a soft engine needing oil network mods to prolong their life? I kinda drive mine hard and dont want to be hurting it any time soon.... Or are these guys your getting the info from, maybe they're modifying their engines for competition use?

And the last recommendation on this thread.....
My recomendation is when the engines has 50 000-60 000 km and if you are planning to keep the bike, change all the main bearings and rod bearings to be safe.
..... Do i need to strip my motor and do the bearings in another 20,000 kms!?! holy crap, thats some recommendation to make!

Latest Oil Starvation Info

Sorry Blag,
don't mean to scare you, :nonono:
Just make everyone aware of the potential of oil starvation problems and possible mods / cures.
I haven't come across any examples of the 750 having any problems, but it would seem a wise precaution to keep an eye on oil levels and change the oil and filters regularly.
If you are doing any work on the engine, it may be a good idea to look at the no4 bearing cap - as the oil feed hole CAN be mis-aligned, which may contribute (with old mucky oil etc) to oil feed problems to no3 journal bearing - which nearly always is the one which fails (so must be the weak point in the system).
You are correct in saying that SOME of the guys with GPZ9's are modding their bikes, but not all of them and the RUMOUR of bottom end failures is linked to ZZR's and the newer ZRX's as well.
IMHO changing all the bearings is excessive, look at the jounals if you are worried as a pecaution, but lots of guys insist that they have not had any problems after years of abuse.
YOU have to decide for you own peace of mind if you are concerened or not.
For my own safety, I will TIDY UP the I and J tubes and modify no4 journal bearing. Synthetic oil changed requently would also seem prudent.
I hope this makes you feel a little better. :D
LOL

From my understanding of the "Oil-Starvation" ISSUE, it WAS a problem with the 84gpz9 engine the problem was adressed mid 84 and fixed totaly for the 85 modle year, I know that its not a problem with the gpz configuration due to the fact I had an 85gpz9 with over 56,000 miles on it never once haveing that engine apart that bike currently has over 66,000 miles on it and has yet to have anything more than simple valve adj and a timeing chain replacement. Persoanly on the Eli engine I dont think ever was a problem, one concideration is you will never run an Eli as hard as a gpz would run (longer distances at higher RPM) and two I honestly do believe that after the 84 year the issue was fixed........ Keep good oil in it, keep cooling sys up to snuff... you will be fine.

Rick,
I know that a lot of people have not had any problems with oil starvation (and I hope that remains the case), but some do.
The results can be expensive and potentially painful.
If you look at ZLRX's post in the ZZR1100 barrels thread - he has posted a link to a ZRX engine on sale on Ebay that has thrown a rod. :detective:

I agree that changing oil and filters, checking the mesh screen and keeping the cooling system up to scratch would all be sensible precautions. :headbang:

But I will still be looking at the bearing journal to see if it is mis-aligned, and taking remedial action if it is. The smoothing of the I and J oil tubes also appears to be a simple job and worth alittle time and effort next time the sump is pulled off.

Will shut up now before everyone thinks I am paranoid. :ignore:

LOL,
Vin :blackknight:

Hi Vin,
Youre not paranoid.... well maybe a little LOL :D , but I am one of those guys that when I hear there might be a technical fault, I become somewhat paranoid :pale: . I bought an audi once, a beautiful A6. I joined an audi forum and shortly afterwards started reading about leaking cam covers, tramsmission problems, suspension issues, brake problems etc, etc..... I started smelling burning oil almost immediately after reading about leaking cam covers! I thought I had bought a piece of sh*t car after the first few days reading the threads. Prolly spent €1000 doing preventative maintenance changing parts that may not have needed changing.... there is always the old adage though of "better being safe than sorry" so maybe I did the right thing...

I did a parachute jump once, and I was kinda cocky with the instructor and the guys in the plane... They sorted me out, They started talking..... Hey joe, that chute kevin is wearing, is that the old one?... yeah mike I think you're right.... Is that the one with the.....PAUSE........Oh boy, I think tha last time i used that one it gave me trouble..... Yeah, I know......PAUSE...... he should be ok though, shouldnt he..........PAUSE....... yeah, he should be fine......
I started feeling sick right here.....

YOU ARE 100% RIGHT to post this info and if I ever do have to tear down my motor I will look at the misaligned no4 bearing cap and the I & J tubes but for now.... ALL I WANT TO DO is put fuel in the tank........ and drive... :glasses8:

Darn good advice about changing oil and filters though, I know plenty of guys that dont bother and just "top up" their oil once every few months when they think of it.... I just bought a magnetic drain plug for my ZL off ebay for my next change, I dont know why all vehicles arent fitted with one of these as standard ....? :dontknow:

Hi Blag,
Glad to hear someone else is a little paranoid - what with my shizophrenia an all, we have a right to be paranoid ! :3some:

Sun has just started to shine over here - hope your tank is full ! :cool10:

I can only think that magnetic plugs aren't fitted at factory is because they make shed loads of money on the spares they make to repair the damage done !
That and they may be accepting responsibility for any failures !??

LOL,
Vin
