Rear wheel burn/spins/break loose etc...

Salut.

Up to what gear should i be able to burn/spin/break loose the rear wheel on a zl900? Is it highly dependent on the tire type?

Precision : Up to what gear should i be able to start a burn/spin/break loose the rear wheel on a zl900

Depends on tire width, tire compound, road, rider weight. With the crappy Kings 150 tire when I got my bike, would burn through first most of second and bark in third. With the new Metzler 170, burns through first then the front comes up in second. Both tire would be dumping the clutch on a slow roll. I also weigh about 205. If I just take my weight of and grab the front brakes, I have powered it through 4th.

More precisions...

I want to know if the bike is supposed to be powerfull enough to start a burn in second gear and moving around 50KM/h???

With the tire they came stock with, yes. On a newer tire with a softer compound, maybe. If you weigh 170 lbs or less, I'm sure it would. It really depends on other factors.

In one of your other posts you ask about engine reliability.

Treating them like this you can probably trash it before the next service is due

I developed a cylinder miss on my 85 ZL900. it came and went the last 3 times I rode it. found the 3# cylinder running cold. have diagnosed to low compression. only 7,000 miles. I am looking for a repair manual. how could a compression issue come and go? when the miss went away, it went away completely. actually seemed to go away under hard accel. I have never had a problem with this bike and don't know much about the valve train.

Welcome zigroid!

Sounds like the valves are out of adjustment. Download the complete manual in the technical library, topic title "Downloadable Goodies"

thanks

Thanks.... I am trying to download now. Probably not the best time to be doing it. Seems to be taking a while. I have owned it since new and with 7,000 miles I obviously haven't rode it much. Hopefully I haven't done any seat or valve damage. Doesn’t seem like a lot of miles to need a valve adjustment but with close clearances I guess it doesn't take much. What threw me off is the fact that the miss was was either 100 percent there or 100 percent gone. No rhyme, no reason. I thought it was ignition. Is there anything else I should be looking at? I assume the adjustment is going to take me a bit. Looks like fun just getting the cover off, unless looks are deceiving.

yea it's a *****. Take some zip-ties and pull the hoses up against the frame to give you some room. You should find something else to slide in there to help the cover slide out without scratching the crap out of it.

Get the compression straightened out and reply here the results.

Original owner bike with 7,000mi....love it! I'm jealous. :D Upload some pics to our gallery, and get yourself a phototbucket account and pull them into here

side cover

before I post pics I need to find a left chrome cover. I had it for sale a while ago and when the bike sat in front of my house someone liberated the airbox cover. the bike is in excellent condition and never been dropped. my brother in law had a ZL1000. I am heavier than he was but the 900 was still faster.....not by much, but faster.

Is it for sale?

for sale?

it was, then it wasn't but I am thinking about selling it again. the wife likes to go once in a while and it really is not comfortable for her. plus I noticed other people get about as far as I do on a tank....75 miles and there better be a gas station in sight. if I take it to work and do 80-85 on the highway I can just make it there and will be on reserve before I get home, if it is filled to the very top when I leave. you know someone who is interested? I had a KLR650 and a Ninja 600 before this....not sure what I would replace it with. I just got the manual downloaded....thanks again.

You will be hearing from him. His name is Chris, his Dad is looking to buy.

Where you from?

just did a valve job on my zl not too long ago ! lots of fun !! lol ! they don't give you a lot of room to work on these zl's. once you get the valve cover off, then it's a lot easier from that point ! CHRIS

With 7000 miles on it, it's unlikely to be a compression issue. I had some real problems getting a proper seal on the spark plug threads with the compression tester I was using. Was gonna make a proper attachment but never got round to it.

Sounds more like a carburettor issue to me. IMHO

tight valves on #3

exhaust valves were snug on #3. has compression now. some were tight, some were loose......is clean inside....nothing looks worn.
