Exhaust sound

Personally I don't think the ZL sounds the way it looks with the standard exhaust, its just too quiet and smooth sounding. I've looked for another system but prices are way too high (£500!)

I can remember reading somewhere that people had drilled holes into the rear of the muffler to bypass the baffle. Has anyone on here heard of it or tried it? Is it worth it?
 
what's it cost for a fine from the EPA (or your equivalent body)?
 
It would be the DOT. Every bike comes stock with DOT approved mufflers. Most aftermarket mufflers are not DOT approved and usually exceed the maximum decibles, especially the V-twins. The V-twin bikes run straight pipes with little or no baffling. Sure it's a rule, it's just hardly ever enforced. There was someone on this board that had an Eli with the mufflers drilled out. Don't know if it really helped.

Just be careful, if you reduce the backpressure too much you will risk fun stuff like twisted cranks! It happened to me when I was a little more ignorant, pulled baffles out of my KZ1100, raced a Venture, twisted crank, $1800 later to have crank balanced, well I mighta done a little more! Bottom line is your engine needs that back pressure and proper jetting...
 
as mine came with aftermarket mufflers i havent heard or seen Origíes......im running Harley Screamin Eagle Slash cut mufflers now,,

ive added some baffles inside ,,
&i dont have collector box,,
i still have airbox&im guessing stock jetting....
it still goes like Satans love child tho'.....

When you mention fines, i don't know how they do it in Australia or elsewhere, but in the U.S., most states require an annual state inspection. You either pass or fail, no fines.

Truthfully, i like having my car inspected. I like knowing that my brakes are good, and all that. However, this time, i was hoping to get by without them noticing that my mufflers have some bottom rust through...

So i brought both bikes to a garage near me that usually works on my cars. They know nothing about bikes. They had me pull the bikes into the garage, demonstrate that both blinkers worked, my high beams, tail light and brake light and my horn. That's it. Slapped a sticker on the fork and i was off. Never looked at the exhaust or the brakes (which i know to be good).

Idiots.
 
Aftermarket mufflers

I put a full 4-1 D&D system on my 1985 ZL900 a coupla years ago...cooler looking, cooler counding, and passed DMV test here in Arizona USA. I got mine thru Pipe City in the USA...pretty cheap, around $400-$500, if I recall.

ELI 1000 sound

In most countries it is not allowed, but there are some ELI 1000 divers here in the Netherlands, that removed the last damper.
Incredible sound. If you drive through a tunnel, it will blast the tiles of the wall.
Have some pics, how they removed the dampers.

Running the D&D Full system for the 1000. Mine is over the top loud! as a matter of fact I'm looking for a replacement muffler for the D&D's, I want to keep the header but I need some back pressure and a little less noise. Realy getting sick of wearing earplugs to go riding.
It is true that loud pipes save lives but they also kill my hearing.
 
I have owned two zl 900's and drilled them both. You have to work with the jetting a bit to get desired results, mostly the needle. You sacrifice a bit of low end torque but hang on around 6000 rpm. Sounds great too.
 
I just installed a D n D full system on my 900 eliminator, it is really nice lookin but it is extreamly loud espacially when u go heavy on the R.P.M's.I had the origonal pipes drilled it was ok, They sound just fine stock as well.

I'm sure you have heard about it all over CNN and such, I have driven over this bridge 100's of times and my mom uses it when she leaves work to go over to my brother's house, she was not heading there today, thankfully, let's just pray for those lost (30 cars have reportedly fallen into the river) and thanks for those still here, like a bus loaded with kids that nearly dropped 65 feet into the Mississippi River.

MAN, THAT SUCKS !!!!!!!! you would think they would inspected the bridge more often than they did . i like the way they change the stories on that subject, trying to pass the blame to someone else ! it's all politics now, & i hate polititions !!!!!!! i'm staying focused on praying for all affected by this tradgity & their families ! CHRIS
