ZELDA LIVES!!

The past week or two I had submitted some questions about revs and the engine cutting out when applying the throttle. Well after much work "Zelda" as I like to call my zl900 made two runs up and down my street. With no problems.
I had flushed the carbs twice and had to kreem the tank due to a good bit of rust and I rebuilt the petcock. By the way that Kreem process is one pain in the butt but works like a charm. The petcock had been leaking and the rebuild help relieve that vacuum reving problem. Put on a new fuel line and some heavy screw clamps. NO LEAKS!!

Will do some more short test rides over the weekend but it looks like I'm out of the woods for now. Thanks to all the guys who offered up support and tech advice it helped out a lot. The KERA group rules.

Glad to hear it.

Hello Cyclefusion,
Glad to hear you are making progress. Could you elaborate a little on the Kreem process? Were you able to keep from eating away the paint when flushing the various acids and such that come with the Kreem kit? And how did you do this? I'm only asking because others have asked about the Kreem kit before but no one has actually tried it and I know Rocky was either going to or already has tried it but was worried about losing some if his paint job. Any tips on the process would be greatly appreciated for future users of the Kreem kit. Any tricks you found or things you would do differently. Thanks. Later.

It can be a difficult process. :x The cleanser, part a, does a fantastic job of dissolving the rust, but you can only use like two and a half gallons so you must rotate it alot. I kept part A in the take for about 4 days rotating it each night. My fuel cap does not provide a solid seal so I lost about a quart of the stuff on my garage floor. Once you get the metal etched look rotate it again. It does work pretty fast. One area rusted back when I was etching another but I was able to redissolve that in a matter of 10 minutes. Part A won't do anything to the outside of the tank. but I didn't let it set very long when it did spill.

Rinse with soapy water, then use part B, the cleaner. it helps get rid of part A. A compressor helps a lot, if you have one. Its not neccessary for it to be dry when you pour in the actual kreem solution. Here is where you have to be care full. The fumes from part B and the coating can alone peel your paint. NOTE: My bike does not have stock paint. It has a very crappaly, new word, radar blue paint job. Kind of purplish. The fumes peeled back the paint around the gas tank opening. Keep rags and soapy wash clothes around and I think you'll do fine.

Really the hardest part for me was fabricating a gasket and metal plate to cover the petcock whole. Metal works better than anything. The stuff is reuseable over and over again. Coat the tank at least twice with the coating. Make time to do it. Once you start etching you have to get to the coating of the tank will starting rusting up immediately.

Its a pain, plain and simple, but it works. Its a tank within a tank. oh and make sure your in a well ventilated area or you with get high! Good or bad? you choose.

Well thats it. Haven't rode tonight. But there are no fluids under my bike either. That's a positive. Supposed to 70+ degrees in Atl, Ga this weekend. I'll be out test riding.

thanks guys, hoped that helped.

Hey CycleFusion, Thanks for the Tips on Kreeming, Need to do my 1000 Tank, Pinhole on the Front Mounting Bracket. My tank does not have any Rust but I will still do the 3 Part Process just to make sure it Sticks. Get you High 8O , Could be Intresting  Will wait for the Weather to Warm up so I can do it Outside, Later Rocky

I don't know Rick, I might have put: Care to do The Dance? or We can only do Fast Dancing. If you're too slow to keep up, we'll wait for you at the next light. Just quick ones, will think of more later. 8)

My girlfriend's ex-brother-in-law just gave me an original copy of an '85 Cycle World that had a write up on the ZL900. It was a great article and once I get to a scanner will post their road test results. One of the biggest complaints they had was the gas cap rattle, which they were sure that would be fixed once the bike went into production.

I heard the same complaint from a vmax owner who had bought a zl900 new in 85. other than that he said it was one bad ass bike.
