Hi all,

Call me slow, but I've just bought my first ever mp3 player.

I bought it from eBay recently, primarily to replace my ancient cassette tape / radio walkman (can't use a cd player on the bike, as it skips way too much to be useful) and I was wondering what sort of setup for listening to your mp3 player do you use when your riding.

Do you use those awful "earbud" type headphones that come supplied with the mp3 player (and how do you stop them from being pulled out of your ears when you pull your helmet on) or did you buy some purpose made earphones or do you have permanently mounted headphone speakers that are fixed directly into the ear recesses in your helmet?

I have used both the earbud style and the helmet speakers on mine. The earbuds are fine if you're only doing a short trip, but will ache after a while as they are being pushed into your ears.

The only downside of the helmet speakers was that they were too quiet. I solved that by buying a "Boosteroo", which is an amplifier/splitter that takes 2 AA size batteries and increases the volume by about 50%. I last used them on my Ninja on the motorway, but even with the boosteroo I couldn't hear them above the wind noise and exhaust noise once I was doing over 80mph. Ok, I had an akropovich race can on the Ninja, and a chin-up helmet that was very noisy, so it was my own fault really. I haven't tried them in my current helmet, but I think they would be great in a quieter helmet.
 
I use the standard ones supplied with the iPod. I wear a skull cap most times and I dont have a prob with them being pulled out when putting on the helmet but the flip side to that is they catch the wind at anything over 70kmh so they're not too good. A mate of mine got a set of ear plugs made for him. they're called Snugplug or something. I'll check it out later. Basically you get 2 tubes of stuff that you put in your ears, it expands gently and sets after a few minutes. tadaa, you have a mould of your inner ears. You send these moulds back to them where they will make some nifty ear plug headphones. He keeps raving about how great they are, no road noise, no wind noise, most comfortable things he's had... full face or skull cap, doesnt matter. I'll have a look see if i can get a link for you. he says the F1 racing drivers use the same kit. Dont think they were hugely expensive either.

I've pulled apart my old, but great sounding headphones, and installed the speakers into my helmet, they sound pretty good, and I've attached them to the inside of my helmet using pieces of "Velcro" self-adhesive tape to hold them in place and if I want to remove it later I still can, they've only got one wire leading to the mp3 player (the opposite side speaker has the wire running underneath the helmet liner) so I should have any problems with tangles. But the test will be how they sound whilst riding. I've only got a full face helmet and it's pretty quiet for wind noise, so hopefully it will be quiet enough to hear the music whilst I'm riding. The touring group I ride with usually does on average 300km > 400kms for our monthly ride, so hopefully the mp3 player will help to alleviate the boredom.
I like the idea of the "Boostaroo" amplifier, acp, I'll have to see if I can find them for sale here in Aust.

Blagadán, I've seen those plugs advertised in some of the Aust. motorcycle magazines and always thought they'd be a good idea, but like most bike accessories in Aust., they are expensive.

Stormy, check out www.vidsonix.com , they sell mirror mount speakers. I have them on one of my Eli's and work quite well. But to each his own though. I have a AM/FM CD player with remote faceplate mounted between the bars and the main unit in a trunk. You're right about skipping cd's, pain in the rear.
 
You'll probably be able to find some on eBay Mick. Or google for them. I know Apple had them on their site as an accessory for the iPod for a while, not sure if they still have it or not.
 
Thank's furchin, for the link, they look very innovative.

I've got a little pair of battery powered, amplified speakers here, they sound pretty good, but I didn't want to put anything on the bike so obvious, especially without a full "wrap around" "Harley Electra-Glide" type touring fairing, but they look alright enough. I might show them to my mate that has a Kawasaki GTR 1000, they'd be right up his alley, plus, if I mounted them on my bike where they showed in the photo, I've got a funny feeling they might hit the fuel tank when you turn.

Yeah, I just looked on eBay Aust. acp, and no one has any listed for auction or "buy it now", but they do in the states, I'm not keen on buying from the states, a purchase ends up costing way too much, once I do the currency conversion rates, postage, etc.

But, I did find them for sale on an Aust. website, here http://www.expansys.com.au/t.aspx?m=127, they are about $47.00AUD, but they are out of stock at present, so i'll just wait until they've got them in stock again before I order one.

The one I've got is the $47AUD version. Smoked plastic case, so you can see that the batteries are in it :)

It's good though, when you're not using it on the bike you can use it to split the output to 3 seperate sets of headphones. Great for a plane or bus, etc, so you don't have to struggle with holding it in one ear so someone else can listen.

I use a pair of sony earbuds that have different size rubber gaskets to fit your ear. 43.00 at best Buy. They are different than the buds supplied with the mp3 as these actually go into the ear canal and help with the wind noise as well, so I can turn down the volume of the music and hear it just as well w/o the hearing loss, ringing in the ear syndrome. I have no problem with them pulling out as long as the cord is routed right. I plan to put speakers in eventually but the problem i see is wind noise will still be there so up goes the volume, I may get a better fitting helmet as well. Just my 2 cents
 
understand you're concern Stormy about hitting the tank. I have them on one of my ZL1000's and have never ever come close to hitting the tank.

I was looking at some earbuds in a shop locally I can't remember if they are Sony, but they are like ones you're talking about, lowlife, they go into the ear canal, but they are very expensive, $69.95 for the normal version and $74.95 for the ipod version. They may be good, but I'll give them a miss, but thanks for telling me anyway.

No problem Mick. It will definitely improve the music on the bike. It turns my headphones into mini speakers when I plug it in.
