i don't have a tester this weekend, and was hoping i wouldn't need one with a little help. i bought a set of blinkers(regular, not LED), and they came wired with a red, yellow, and black w/white stripe. the bike has two existing sets of two terminals with a butt splice, one set is black w/ yellow stripe and a gray wire, the other set a black/yellow with a green wire. i blew a few fuse on the first attempt, knocking out front blinkers as well. i replaced the fuse, and the front works again, but no dice to the rear yet. currently i have the black/white into the black/yellow of each set, and one of the reds spliced into the bikes existing gray and the other blinker's red into the existing green. yellows i just have grounded to the body. anybody know what i'm doin wrong here?

The green is power to the left the gray is power to the right and the black/yellow is ground for both. You are trying to use dual filament turn signals and it's not gonna work unless you tie the running lights into the lower bright portion of the tail light.

Yellow to ground must be your short thats popping the fuse.

I would guess that the yellow is the turn, red is the running and the black? is the ground. PM me if you want to call

Now you could try the red to the red on the tail light. that would give you running lights at all times in the rear.

Keep in mind i'm guessing at the wiring on your turn signals. If you want to know which wire does what them check the socket and pigtail ends for continuity.

I just replaced all my turn signals and, like ZLMark said, I think the problem is that you you're grounding the yellows to the body. The stock rear turn signals have no running lights, they are blinkers only - single filament bulbs. So you'll have one wire you won't be using. If you unground the yellows you should stop the short.

On the fronts you've got running lights - so Red would be the light, yellow would be the flasher & black would be the ground. In the back, just use one or the other, Red or Yellow OR you could even wire both to the flasher and then the black goes to ground. Or, like ZLMark said, wire the red to the running light on the brake light to get rear running lights.

I have the opposite problem, as the 4 turn signals I have don't have running lights, so I've got to figure something out to get a running light back up front... I might just wire an amber LED in each signal housing.

so on the signals the red is constant hot, black is ground, and yellow is the blinker? if i leave the red floating will that disrupt the circuit and give me nothing to the blinkers?

If you remove the bulb, does it have 2 contacts on the bottom or one? Weird that it's got 3 wires if it's a single filament. Is it an 1156 bulb or an 1157?

Now I'm no electrician and I don't know which signals you've got, but I would think that if you just hooked up one or the other and left the other one unconnected, everything should work as it should.

What you might want to try to do is just connect to the battery or even a battery charger. Black to the negative and then either the red or yellow to the positive - see what lights up.

all of the above PLUS, if someone stuck a single element bulb in a dual element socket (yes, it CAN be done) it will short out no matter how you wire it! If there are three wires it is a dual element housing and must have a dual element bulb installed. There must be two connections on the bottom of the bulb.
