ZL 600 Jetting and Mods-Part 2!

Hey, out there! Sorry I haven't gotten back to ya'all in a while, had some computer problems, and couldn't even get to here! Just wanted to give you folks an update, and mabye there's some useful info here too, for someone caught in my same situation!

I went to the Prostar race at South Georgia motorsports park, at the end of March, during BikeWeek, and the first run down the strip, I couldn't have had a WORSE run if I'd tried! The beast wouldn't even get above 6K rpm, and was blowing seroius smoke! Soooooo...that night, I played the "racer thing" in my motel room, and lowered the needle to the #3 position(Dynojet kit) and put in the #90 jets, in place of the #130's the kit recommended. MAN, what a difference! It accelerated like a rocket, and would rev to the limit in all gears! Next day, went back and during qualifications, had a best of 14.83@89plus mph! Oh, and I was standing on the starting line and got to watch(and video!) Larry Mcbride as he went 5.960 down the quarter at 248.66 mph!!! Hopefully, I'll be able to upload the video, so you can see what Eliminators grow up into! I can still smell the nitromethane!
I got eliminated in the first round the next day, re-lighted and went under my dial-in, but the bike was running pretty good, except for the idle, still bouncing around. Once I got back home, I adjusted the idle mix screw out in 1/2 turns, and when I got to 3 turns out...Hot damn! It idled constant! And still was pulling like a freight train, all through the rev-range! There was only one little problem(if you wanna call it that!)...the plugs were REAL white when I pulled them, and my gas milage was up to 56(!) mpg!
Can you say,"Running kinda LEAN, huh?"!!! Ok, here we go again...! Next time out, at the Elmer Trett Nationals at Atlanta Dragway, everything was coming together, did the test and tune, went through qualification, and got to eliminations, wher my first opponet was...none other than Keith "Shine" Dennis, premier shootout and street racer extrodinare! On a 'Busa! Needless to say, I got...gotta say it, my ass waxed! And Good! But hey, if ya gotta go down, at least it was against one of my hero's!LOL! Ran a best of 14.7, at 89mph plus. Still. the fact that I was running so lean was REALLY beginning to worry me. Soooo...called Dynojet, and ordered a set of #92's, 94's, 96's, 98's and 100 jets, along with extra washers and circlips(if you get a Dynojet kit, order the clip/washer set from them, believe me, it's worth it, you can't imagine how tough it is to find a washer the size of a pencil eraser at the bottom of a backpack, while you're trying to reassemble a carb in a high wind at the strip!LOL!). Before they got here, I ran again at Carolina Dragway in S. Carolina (1/8th mile) and managed a best of 8.73@79mph plus. However, when you ru a street bike against someone's Super Gas(5.60 index/1/8th mile) bike, guess who's gonna come out on top? Especially if he's on his game that day? You guessed it, got waxed again! Who cares, I'm still havin fun! Finally got the other jets in, and have now got the following set up;

Needle at #3 position-

#92 main jet-

mix screws at 3 turns out-

Now my milage is back down in the 40-45mpg range, wher it used to be, have yet to pull they plugs, but it should give a good read this time. Now, if I can keep fro red-lighting at the 1st race of the SEMDRA season on April 29th...mabye I can have some fun WINNING for a change!LOL!

Once again, I want to thank everyone on this ite for your help and support, I really couldn't have gotten even this far without any and all of your advice, assistance, and postings about all things in the world of Eliminators(especially the stuff about carbs!LOL!)(And getting rid of that#%@^&##*$@ airbox!). No matter what, I'm gonna have ba special thought about all of you every time I'm heade to and down the strip, hoping to show what "old school" people on "real" motorcycles can still do! Will keep ya posted on future stuff, Keep the shiny side up, God Blees you All, and as always.....

ELIMINATORS ROCK!!!

Well after about a week of searching I finally found a fairing I liked. Most of my searching lead me to a "Viper" fairing that looked like 1950's bubble thing. Anyway it took about six hours of altering and fitting but it fits really well and does help at higher speeds.

POLL.........I am going to repaint this winter (yes I am going to stay screaming canary yellow). Do I paint the fairing to match or leave it glossy black. Pics are in my album as I can't figure out how to add them here. Your thoughts on this will be greatly appriciated.

It might look good to paint all the bodywork yellow, fairing, duckbill, and radiator shroud

I AGREE WITH MARK ! paint it to match bike! by the way, like the fairing. i used to have that same style on my old zl.i've been debating on getting one for this zl, or, leaving it off ! looks good !!! CHRIS

Chris,
Make that sumbitch look like it's been dipped in "Screaming Yellow Canary", it will look AWESOME!!!!!
moab...

I'm with all the above, hahahaha. Paint the fairing yellow as well. There used to be one around here when I was a kid that was yellow - I mean everything was yellow - rims, motor, everything. It looked a lot better than that sounds. It was one of the Eliminators that convinced me to buy one. Used to see it every weekend when we would go out "cruisin'" - hahaha. There was also a green one and a white one done the same way - they were pretty sharp. Later.

There is no doubt..... That bike needs to be yellow ALL YELLOW. I'm in the process of adapting a slipstreamer ss28 to mine. Looks like the old tracy windshield I had on my 85 vulcan. I think I may paint that red to match the bike too. JK

That looks like one of the old 70's "Stone" type Z1R bikini fairings, to me (Ross and Mark will know what I'm talking about). I've got a small clear cruiser type windshield that's the same height as that and I found whilst it was great for high speed stuff, it gave off a lot of turbulence when riding normally, the wind noise and head buffeting to the helmet was very bad, it was actually heaps quieter and far more comfortable when I took it off.

...but I'd definitely paint it yellow to match the rest of the bike.

Mick.

I gotta agree with the masses! Yellow all the way........

Viper v. FlyScreen

'freak:
I'd like to put my vote in for body color/yellow as well!
Where did you pick up your fairing and (if you don't mind me asking) what did it cost?
Does it move the air off your chest and over your helm or does it put the air stream right at your head? I only ask because I roll a half helm in the Summertime.

ZLMark,
I saw that you had a flyscreen on your bike & I was wondering how you felt it worked.

Thanks!

I can tuck down behind it, thats all it's good for. The screen is too dark especially when i'm dodging rain on a overcast day, I have to peek out the right side. I bought the bike with it on and have never ridden it otherwise. I planned on taking it off but it's kinda grown on me.

I've got a similar screen on mine (see: "Mick / Stormy" photo in my photo album in the gallery) and I'm of the same opinion as zlmark, they are good to duck behind, but I find the screen creates a lot of wind turbulence and therefore lots of helmet wind noise, as soon as I took mine off the helmet noise quietened down quite considerably, but they do look cool.

Mick.

Thanks for that info, definitely good to know!

That's actually what I was worried about, the air getting moved off my chest right into my head! :nonono: LOL

zlmark,

When I'm tucked under the screen at high speed, it's great, but as soon as I stick my head up at "normal" speeds (sub-100km/h), my head get's buffeted badly and as I wrote before, the helmet wind noise is so bad, I can't even hear my mp3 player, but it does save getting hit with heaps of bugs, especially in spring / summer. For the little times I'm travelling at high speed, which isn't very often, it's hardly worth having it on for the little good it actually does. I've made a higher one that really does work well, but it's so high, it makes the bike look like those "Vespa" type scooters with the ridiculously high screens in japan, etc, in other words it looks bloody awful.

Mick.

I can feel the air hitting me from the chest up. Like I said i have not known it any other way, maybe I'll try it for comparision.

As far as bugs go I don't think it does a damn thing.
