Ethanol

Salut.

Any advise on using gaz with 5% ethanol in a zl900? Would it change something?

They use 10% ethanol here in the winter months. I try to avoid it when I can but haven't had any issues with short term use.

Loss percentage

You will lose the same percentage of gas mileage as the amount added to the gas. 5% will be a loss of 5% 25% added will be a loss of 25% of your mileage you also lose power!

So,if you have to burn more fuel to go the same miles
what effect would that have on pollution?

And to answer the ques to this post:
I`ve heard it will break down the inner coating on
gas tanks that have been sealed.

Ethanol is an excellent solvent! But geuss where the crap in your tank ends up after the "green" gas breaks it loose? Anyone remember the oil embargo of the 70's? 8O

Thanks MachIV, I’ve got a busted tank I want to experiment with and was looking for something to get rid of that crap inside (it wasn’t prepared properly and therefore didn’t work in any case).

Mileage and...

Very good point i was wondering if any one would catch that. It seems like another scam to me if you get 25% less mileage you buy 25% more fuel and the whole point is to use less fuel. Another point it disolves the oil at the top of the cylinders in your engine, result they wear out faster. Motorcycles or cars or tractors or mowers etc.with carbs have to watch out because it disolves plastic floats over time also. Good stuff huh.

And don`t get me started on what it does to 2-strokes. :x

Just my opinion about the fuel situation here in the US. E85 (corn) may be great for the cars designed to use it, and biodiesel (soybeans) is great for diesels, but one question? If no one is manufacturing real estate anymore, and the population keeps rising, where in the hell do the powers that be suggest you grow the corn and the beans to make the fuel, in your back yard?

I just read an article in Road bike mag about this crap it does all that i mentioned above plus it attracts water and will corrode the inside of your carbs as well as attacking rubber and plastic floats.

Hello fellow members,
Just to recap..i picked up a 87 ZL1000 with 3600 miles that had been sitting since 97..
Well finally got around to getting the newly reassembled, acid dipped carbs back on my ZL1000 and it fired right up(sort of)…**on a side note** PRAISE TO THE MEMBERS THAT SUGGESTED THE NEW CARB BOOTS , They are a must if you are going to remove the carbs!!!..it really wasn’t that difficult to get those carbs back on. I use a set of 12†hemostats to first get the boots around the bottom of the carbs then the top..took like 10 minutes..***

Anyway, as I started to say before I interrupted myself, it runs, but not right. First, it wont idle even when it gets hot. I have to crack the throttle to hold the RPMS at about 2k..Also, which I cant figure out, is for no apparent reason and totally randomly it will let out a big PSSSSTTT..like a big FART  is the best way to describe it.. any thoughts on my farting ZL?? Thanks

First guess would be valve timing, assuming that the carbs are re-assembled and set up correctly. Has the head been removed or timing chain replaced?
I'm intrigued.........where does it fart from?????

it farts out of both exhaust pipes at the same time.. I have no idea about the the timing...this may help..its stumbles below 3k, but above that with more throttle it runs pretty smooth.

Check for vacuum leaks, make sure the carbs are fully seated into the carb holders.
Check the snorkel for nests.

If you think you have vacuums/vents switched up then test by running on prime and capping off the vacuum lines.

Change to dark colored undies until excessive farting has been fixed
:rotf:

You can always just truck it to mid-ohio next week and we'll have a group maintenance day. :groupcheers:

I would check the temp of your headers right after starting it and moniter the temps. If you have two cylinders missing, either 1 and 3 or 2 and 4, you may have a bad coil. You may be loading up with fuel in the exhaust then when it fires, WALA, a "fart" out of both pipes when the fuel ignites!

Good call. You could still have a plugged idle circuit in the carb which will give the symptoms as wuputt mentioned only that it might be just one carb or two that do not share a coil.

this sounds plausable..i did touch each header pipe and they're all gettin hot...i gusess ill have to pull the carbs and re check everythng...
