removing engine 1st time: how do i disconnect the driveshaft

Subject pretty much says it all. My starter clutch has completely gone and I'm pulling the whole engine to get at it. I've removed everything except I don't know how to deal with the driveshaft. How does it disconnect?

If you slide back the rubber boot so that you can see the shaft at the engine end ( can't remember if its easier to drop the swing arm first. The shaft comes out forwards from the swingarm so you might as well do it first anyway) and then rotate the shaft slowly. You will see a small hole. At the bottom of this small hole is a pin which holds the shaft in place. I used a small allen key to depress the pin against the spring pressure and the shaft slides out rearwards really easily.

BE CAREFULL not to lose the small pin (for 'small' read 'extremely small' )

Around the inside of the 'inner' shaft there is a coil of spring steel that acts as the spring. Remove the spring and put the spring and pin in a plastic bag and put it somewhere really safe. I lost mine and had to wait 6 weeks while the dealer ordered me another one.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice Kawasaki-Krazy. I'm off to do some dismantling

Yeppere, Drop The Swingarm First, Makes the Puting Back together a "LOT EASIER" Later the Nutter

you don`t need to drop the whole s-arm,just
pull the "caps"off both sides and only slide the shaft side back.
saves lotsa time by not dropping the whole thing.

I'm with MachIV (again :) ). I replaced my engine without re/moving the swingarm and I wish I spent a little more time by doing so (and I could have serviced the swing arm bearings while it was out). I found that additional clearance provided by moving it back would have prevented the damage to the front left engine cases as it cleares (in my case didn't clear) the fwd left engine mount. Only mild scratches and should blend out OK. When I next fit a pretty donk, it ain't gunna be scratched, no matter how much extra stuff I remove.

How many links are in the timing chain for the ZL 900? Need to know to get a chain cut to size and then joined. Mick says he can get one down at Kawasaki Australia for about $50 Australian or about $41 US which would be cool. :D

This is the price quoted there Elimafreak and that's without shipping.

92057 Chain,Camshaft 1 $77.63

I think it'll be cheaper to go with the one Stormy is talking about so I still have to find out how many links are in the chain. Any help guys?

Thanks

Still nothing from you guys on how many links in the timing chain. Don't any of you guys that have a 900, have an old chain they can use to count how many links are in it?

Guess I might have to take mine out and do it. I was hoping I could get the info without doing that as I have a friend coming to help me do a valve adjustment but then I might have to do the valve adj. again when the new chain and tensioner goes in.

Thanks,

SD

Stormy was told by his Kawi dealer that is was 105 to 115 but they weren't sure. 5555 Guess I will have to pull mine. 5555555 I was thinking the same thing Mark about getting distracted.

Thanks,

SD

THANKS SD I`LL TRY THAT AFTER WORK MY WORKS CACHE PILOT WON`T LET ME INTO MANY SITES,STRANGE I CAN GO TO THIS ONE WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS YET.. AGAIN THANKS SD ANDY :D

Well ZLMark sent me a pic and we both counted 59 links in the chain, I'm trying now to see if I can source it here instead of going to OZ for it. Should be less than the $50 Australian for it without shipping but to the US it might be cheaper to go the Parts Depot route.
